Born on the bayou.

2K's upcoming Mafia III arrives later this year, and while we're still waiting to see more gameplay and screenshots, the developer has now released a handful of pieces of concept art.

In fact, the official Mafia III Twitter account has been sporadically releasing concept art from the 1960s game over the past few months. We've now rounded up those images and put them into the gallery below. Click on the thumbnails to see them in full size.

On display are Mafia III's varied environments, including the Louisiana bayou and New Orleans city streets, among other places.

The images are gorgeous. But bear in mind that concept art aims to capture a general design concept. As such, the final game may not necessarily look the same. Whatever the case, concept art is fun to look at and Mafia III's is no different.

In Mafia III, you play as Lincoln Clay, a mixed-race man who grew up an orphan and later fought in the Vietnam War before finding his way to New Orleans. The game places a lot of emphasis on depicting the racism and prejudice against black people that was present in the deep south in 1968, the year the game takes place. Developer Hangar 13 says the game does not intend to sensationalize racism.

Mafia III will be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime after April 2016, though a specific release date has not been announced. For lots more on Mafia III, check out GameSpot's preview from Gamescom.
