Check Out This Gorgeous Mafia 3 Concept Art

Born on the bayou.

2K's upcoming Mafia III arrives later this year, and while we're still waiting to see more gameplay and screenshots, the developer has now released a handful of pieces of concept art.

In fact, the official Mafia III Twitter account has been sporadically releasing concept art from the 1960s game over the past few months. We've now rounded up those images and put them into the gallery below. Click on the thumbnails to see them in full size.

No Caption Provided

On display are Mafia III's varied environments, including the Louisiana bayou and New Orleans city streets, among other places.

The images are gorgeous. But bear in mind that concept art aims to capture a general design concept. As such, the final game may not necessarily look the same. Whatever the case, concept art is fun to look at and Mafia III's is no different.

In Mafia III, you play as Lincoln Clay, a mixed-race man who grew up an orphan and later fought in the Vietnam War before finding his way to New Orleans. The game places a lot of emphasis on depicting the racism and prejudice against black people that was present in the deep south in 1968, the year the game takes place. Developer Hangar 13 says the game does not intend to sensationalize racism.

Mafia III will be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime after April 2016, though a specific release date has not been announced. For lots more on Mafia III, check out GameSpot's preview from Gamescom.

i honestly can say that the pictures are super amazing and when it is first dated out to be released i am going to pre-order this bad boy.... i have Mafia II for the Xbox 360 and i can't wait to get this for my Playstation 4. i really do love these types of games because like in Mafia II in one particular mission, you have to sneak into a building and use stealth... are you guys going to have stealth in this BEAUTY... you cannot go wrong with stealth because stealth makes games interesting.....

Headline should read: Check out how the game won't look because consoles aren't powerful enough...

Can't wait for this, Mafia and Mafia II especially I loved...maybe cliche story but enjoyable. This new one looks the mutts though, hope they up their game and make a cracker.

Mafia has a score of 73 on Metacritic and Mafia II 75...so in the sort of 4/5ish range, 'good' but not excellent. The new one going by the premise, setting and look of it surely a shoe in for an 80+? Lets hope so :)

--i hope this game kicks ass
--it seems a little quirky(or offbeat in a VERY weird way)
--like it is trying to hard(almost like it has been stuck in development hell)
--but i love open word sandbox crime games(i love gta and i also love saints row 2 and 3)
--so
--unless it scores ridiculously low
--ill be getting ALL UP in this one

@omotih:
--nah
--not "terrible" terrible is like 3/10
--even at worst
--mafia was at least 7/10(good-great)

--and like i said
--the first half(1/3) was more like a 10/10
--but after the HUGE amazing opening
--the game became shallow
--and the story became stale and bland

--but the cars were pretty badass
--and the city was fun to wreak a little havoc in

The art looks great! It really is capturing the look of New Orleans well. I wasn't expecting the art to show the church I went to as a child, so that was a pleasant surprise! I'm looking forward to recognizing everything from my childhood in the game!

@Scorch_22: Ah, dude, playing in your hometown is a hoot. I'm from Boston, and it's making Fallout 4 almost too much fun just finding places I know and getting in jokes. Have fun with this one, dude.

@olddadgamer: Oh man, I bet that is awesome to play your hometown in Fallout 4, and with the radioactive post-apocalyptic setting in the game, it must make Boston that much more interesting for you! I will have fun with this game, and hopefully I won't nitpick the locations of buildings in the game too much haha

@Legend002:
--if you liked the gtas
--then
--DEFINITELY
--it is sorta a gta knockoff(open sandbox car crime)
--but they do a GREAT job "going there own way"
--mafia 1 and 2 were basically the godfather(id rate them solid 8/10s)
--this one looks like a great starting point
--if you are interested in the franchise
--im sure the first 2 havent aged well(the graphics mainly)
--though mafia 2 is still one of those games that you can have A LOT of fun with
--from the sandbox stuff(the maps create an EXCELLENT reality to enjoy the story in)
--also the way time 'passes' early in the game
--you start in like the late 30s/early 40s
--then you actually go to ww2 for a little while(ha literally you fight in ww2)
--then you come back
--and EVERYTHING has changed(mainly the cars)
--but the music and everything
--the 1st 1/3-1/2 of the game is ASTONISHING
--and it is worth 'a go' just to experience that part of the game

Mafia II for me was legendary. Amazing gameplay, amazing story, amazing characters. I can't wait for mafia 3, but I'm not sure if it can top it's predecessor. If it does, respect for 2k games.
