ChartSpot: December 2006

Gears of War takes first prize, followed by Guitar Hero II, Madden, and Zelda; no PS3 games make the console top 20, while the Sims and WOW rule the PC charts...again.

Last week, industry-research group NPD Funworld released the top-selling games for 2006. The third-best finisher for the year was Gears of War, which sold 1.8 million copies since its release on November 9. Just less than half of those games were sold in December, making the Xbox 360 shooter--and GameSpot 2006 Game of the Year--the month's most popular game.

Another 360 game, Activision's Call of Duty 3, also cracked the top 10 in December, landing at number eight. The PlayStation 2 version of the Treyarch-developed World War II shooter landed in 10th place, eight places behind another Activision game, Guitar Hero II for the PS2. (An Xbox 360 version of the game is due in March.)

In third was Electronic Arts' perennial best-seller Madden NFL, also for the PS2. However, that platform's usual domination of the monthly console charts was broken in December. The top 10 for the month was an eclectic bunch, with the GameCube Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess landing in fourth, just ahead of the Wii version. Behind them was WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 for the PS2 in sixth and the DS-exclusive New Super Mario Bros. in seventh. Another DS title, Yoshi's Island 2, came in ninth.

No games for the PlayStation 3, which was released on November 19th, made NPD's console top 10. Nor did any PS3 titles make the top 20, likely due in part to many purchasers intent on reselling the console, not buying games. The new console's small installed base was also a factor; even the rival Wii console only had one title in the top 20, the aforementioned Twilight Princess, while the Xbox 360 had four. The most popular game for Sony's new console was Resistance: Fall of Man, which is also the platform's best-reviewed.

The Sims 2 franchise overran the PC charts this past holiday season. The Sims 2: Pets was the top game for the month, followed by the Sims 2 (third), The Sims 2 Glamour Life Stuff (fifth), The Sims 2: Happy Holiday Stuff (seventh), The Sims 2 Open For Business (12th), The Sims 2 Holiday Edition (13th), and The Sims 2 Nightlife (18th). The ever-popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft finished second in December, with Medieval II: Total War (fourth), Flight Simulator X Deluxe (sixth), and Battlefield 2142 (eighth) also finishing strong.

no surprise on the no PS3 games making the top 20.

Anyone else wondering why, in the "Average Price" column for "ALL CONSOLES," Twilight Princess for the Cube is listed as selling for $79? If the question's already been asked, then excuuuuuuuse me, princess.

Madden... really people??? There's so many better games to spend money on. Especially if you own madden 2006. What a crazy world.

"5 years later Super Smash Bros Melee is still on the Gamecube's top 10 list" And what about Halo 2, that has been out sicne 2004/2005, so doesnt exactly say much about other Xbox games, if only one can beat it.

Avatar image for edhc44

"5 years later Super Smash Bros Melee is still on the Gamecube's top 10 list" Yeah, but I suppose that is mostly due to the fact that there aren't good realises for the GC anymore... Don't get me wrong, I have a GC and more than 20 games for it (Including SSBM, which is one of the games I play the most for any system) but when you stop and think about it, the last few years have been rough on Nintendo's now-dead system.

im not at all surprised that no PS3 games made the top 20 not only was the launch of the PS3 one of the most poorly-executed launches of a video game console ever, but there was also a shortage in games AND accessories as well im not saying that the PS3 isnt a cool piece of hardware, im just saying that Sony, along with all the developers that made PS3 games, really f++ked up a golden opprotunity

Avatar image for klusps

Wow, I'm suprised that none of the PS3 games made it in the top 20 games for all consoles.

SONY went down for a dirt nap like I said in Sept. They should of fixed the only game that was once great. SOCOM 3 and the $39.99 ripp off COMBINED ASSAULT. You didn't make it in the top 20 yes you are leading the way in next generation gaming, for worst marketing in the world. But XBOX 360'S FEAR IS TOP OF THE LINE, BY BY SONY GAME OVER

Gears of War rulez the games in 2006.

Avatar image for majestikk

Gears of War is a new type of shooter. One that has spoiled me a bit. It spoiled me because it was that good. It's a new kind of shooter. Anybody that has been hating on this game should really do themselves a favor and play it. And if you had, then play it on hardcore or insane. The game makes you feel like you're in a war. This is how real warfare is. Flanking, running for cover, shooting from cover, blind firing, this game is really intense. It even becomes more fun when you play against some solid competition on-line. It's a thinking man's shooter. Halo was classic for the Xbox, and GOW is that classic for the Xbox 360. Not to take any thunder from Halo 3, but I'm now wishing Halo's "jump" button would somehow be converted into a "cover" button.

I agree with you, lithis. This proves that with just the right amount of hype, an original title can become an instant classic IF it provides satisfying gameplay, beautiful graphics, and audio second to none (which Gears does).

Avatar image for RE4manonline

"lithus Gears of War is really a shoe-in at this point. As much as the fanboys knock it, the numbers don't lie. They hit gold with that. I didn't expect PS3 to make such a list, but that's because it's still too new and not settled yet. Eventually PS3 will get it's killer app (maybe if we're lucky, PS3 will also get Gears of War and play online with 360 gamers like FFXI is doing now with the PC, PS2 and 360)" Oh yeah right GOW will go on ps3....Like that will EVER happen

Avatar image for KORAK33

Zelda has always been BORING! It is aimed at, younger KIDS! That is why, the adults love it...It is TOO EASY to beat..This is why it sells, so much! I am glad to see the Ps2 games selling, well...This keeps the developers busy...AND, keeps them cranking out new ideas! More competition = BETTER GAMES, for all systems! The 360 is the best, so far! BUT, the Wii has a lot working for it! Sorry Sony, trash the ps3 and start all over!!! Good thing the Ps2 is supporting your company! URN OUT!

At least the Ps2 is helping keep sony on the charts which is good, but when the PS3 gets its hand in the pot he fire should bun up hotter then ever because then the other consoles will be battleling 2 great system from the same makers. Good luck to all , as i always say there is no bad system only bad games made by the devellopers

How about GoW,the game is awsome & it deserves to be up their.Everybody that Ive shown this game to have loved it,some of them potential PS3 buyers are now considering buying a 360 after they talked a bunch of s*** about it.GoW is a true system seller,if you havent played this game yet what the hell are you waiting for???

Avatar image for jaje21

Enoslives, of course the PS2 is going to have games selling like that. Everyone that can't afford/find a next-gen console are going to buy PS2s and buy games for them. We already know PS2 won last gen wars and since the PS3 sucks a fat one you aren't going to see any games on the chart so that it leaves the Sony fanboys only the PS2 to buy for. I own all three consoles and I am still enjoying my 360 the most, the Wii has incredible potential. The PS3 is going to have some killer apps but the FF series is the only thing that is exclusive or going to remain exclusive that I care about.

Avatar image for enoslives7

There are 4 PS2 games in the top 10.....doing better than the wii-wii, and the crapbox 360. The PS2 is 7 years old and still whipping the competition . Sony owns nintendo and micro$oft, the facts don't lie.

sonicplys....have you played gears of war???? because as far as i know they didn't skip on anything. They have added 2 new maps (which are free0 and a free update. The game runs great and has very little problems, It is set up perfect and overall an A- in gaming and value. So where did I lose out on my 60 dollars, because I have played way worse games that cost way less.

Avatar image for LosDaddie

Where are the PS3 and PSP games? Yet another victory for the Wii60!!:D

Avatar image for Sonicplys

If you ppl didnt buy Gears of War at launch, it would have had a price drop and sold even more. But no, you ppl like spending 60+ on a video game. The company is saying, well ppl have a lot of money to spend, lets give them 25% of the game when it comes out and save the rest of the game on the deluxe edtion, and charge it 80 bucks since ppl have a lot of money. I wouldnt be surprised if next year games will be 70 bucks.

PS3 is gud on paper BUT xbox 360 proves that it can compete with the highest PC games and PS3...hands down 2007 will be the year where im gona be broke hehehe...just look at the stellar line ups heheheheh...know what i mean : ) lookng forward for the revolutionary MASS EFFECT" YEAH DEWD ITZ TOOOOTALLI COULE 2 B ILLITIRITE

The list is comparing all consoles game sales, which means that GOW sales are going up against PS2 games. PS2 has what a 100 million plus install base. How is that not impressive?

Avatar image for saugh

"It is amazing how GOW is at the top with only 10 million Xbox 360’s. " Not really, because there are more 360's out there than any other next gen console, or should I now say current gen? Nope, not until PS3 releases in Europe.

"So is GoW's average price $61 or $63 ???" Depends on the store your purchasing it from.I bought it from EB for $59.99 and then you have taxes etc so probably 63 atmost. Right after xmas Bestbuy had a sale on that game and it was down to 50. but i dont think they have that any more. Those lists are predictable. Of course GoW is going to top it. Why is Twilight Princess for the GC more expensive then the Wii Version?

Avatar image for YourDaddy88

Good deal for GoW - it's a kick a$$ game IMO. I was a bit surprised at the PS2 still owning all, but then again after years of establishing a consumer base, a large library and continued support from Sony and developers in combo with a low price will do that. 2007 should be the real transition year for next gen, now that all 3 major console makers have a next gen system. Good stuff, good time to be a gamer. Hey, did you guys notice something? - Most games for both MS and Sony on the lists above are from 3rd parties, but Nintendo is mostly from...Nintendo itself. I wish both MS and Sony would increase their software development...would be good. I can't stand 3rd party developers sometimes...
