ChartSpot: August 2004

In what has become a tradition, the 2004 August game charts were dominated by the latest Madden NFL game. EA Sports' footballer proved once again why it is the best-selling franchise of all time as its Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 2: Collector's Edition occupied four of the top 10 console slots.

But even though it took the top prize, Madden's sole rival was hot on its heels. As a result, the PlayStation 2 version of Sega and Take-Two's ESPN NFL 2K5 took the bronze in the console race, while the Xbox version came in at fifth place. Even more impressive was the fact that each game only slipped one slot from its July position, despite the Madden onslaught.

Pro football games aside, the console top 20 was made up mainly of returnees. All Activision's Spider-Man 2 games were back, albeit far lower down on the list. Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction and NCAA Football 2005's positions remained largely unchanged. The Halo 2 prerelease hype helped propel the first Halo game into the number nine slot, while San Andreas Fever helped its forebear, Vice City, reenter the top 20 at number 19. Besides Madden, the only all-new entries in the charts were Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow (#6) and Hot Shots Golf Fore! (#14).

In the PC charts, there was a changing of the guard at the top. Not only did id and Activision's Doom 3 knock NCsoft's City of Heroes out of the number one spot, but also it kicked it out of the top 10 entirely, forcing it all the way down to number 11. The top 20 was still dominated by Sims packages (Deluxe--#2, Mega Deluxe--#5) and expansions (Makin' Magic--#7, Superstar--#9, Unleashed--#16, Vacation--#20 ). Zoo Tycoon, Age Of Mythology, Rise Of Nations, and Halo continued to rake in cash, as did Call of Duty and Battlefield Vietnam. The only new non-Sims entry into the top 20, other than Doom 3, wasn't new at all. It was the resurgent Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
