Charlize Theron Comments On Not Playing Furiosa In Next Mad Max Movie

Director George Miller is hoping to go into production of the next movie in 2021.

2015's Mad Max: Fury Road was a critical success, scoring a 90 on GameSpot sister-site Metacritic. Additionally, the movie won six Oscars at the 2016 Academy Awards. So when a spin-off was announced focusing on Charlize Theron's character Furiosa, everyone was excited.

Sadly, Theron won't be starring in the film. The focus will be on Furiosa, but it will be a prequel, and director George Miller has already been doing auditions over Skype. The actress recently opened up during an interview for The Old Guard with The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's a tough one to swallow," Theron told THR. "Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making that film with him. He's a master, and I wish him nothing but the best. Yeah, it's a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I'm so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we're focusing on."

Theron also explained that a lot of women don't get a second chance within the genre if a film under-performs. This was the case for Theron in 2005 when her film Æon Flux floundered in the box office. "It's not a very forgiving genre when it comes to women," she explained.

Æon Flux has a reported budget of $62 million, and the 2005 film only brought in $53 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Critically, it was a failure as well, as it received a 36 on Metacritic. However, none of this should be blamed on Theron, who won an Oscar two years prior for her role in the biopic Monster.

As for the Furiosa prequel, Miller plans on starting production in 2021; however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the future is a bit unknown. This could mean it will be a few years before the film hits theaters.
