For all the that games that try to capture the feel of the massive third-person open worlds of Grand Theft Auto IV and V these days, it's sometimes nice to see a game take inspiration from the older GTA installments. One such title, called Geneshift, is a shooter clearly reminiscent of GTA 2, and it's launching next week in early access.

In a press release, Nik Nak Studios announced that Geneshift will come to PC through Steam on May 23 after eight years in development. It's a top-down shooter that has a similar sort of over-the-top action as GTA 2. However, it also has multiplayer: Geneshift features both four-player co-op in its campaign and five-on-five competitive modes. You can check out a gameplay trailer below.

Geneshift looks pretty cool and appropriately wild. Co-op support seems like a great addition, and I'm particularly fond of the scene in the trailer where four players roll around on a flatbed truck.

Geneshift will cost $8 during the first week post-release. After that, it'll run you $10. You can currently check out a demo of the game, which gives free access to the multiplayer modes without time restrictions.

In other GTA news, GTA V itself recently added a classic mode that brings back the top-down perspective. You can read more about that here.
