Now Playing: PSN ID Change Feature Causes Critical Issues In Some Games - GS News Update

PlayStation fans can rejoice, as the much-requested PSN ID change feature is finally live on PS4. Changing your PSN ID is free for the first time; each subsequent change will cost $10 / £8, while PS Plus subscribers get a reduction to $5 / £4. The news is good, but there's a catch: not every PS4 game might will play nicely with your new ID, and in some cases, the problems could be significant.

As stated on the PlayStation Blog, "As a result of the preview program, we've found an instance where a game did not fully support the feature." Sid Shuman, PlayStation's director of social media, clarified that any game published on or after April 1, 2018 should support the feature. However, not every one of these games has been specifically tested with the feature implemented, so releasing after that date is not a complete guarantee of an issue-free experience. There is an extensive list of games tested with no issues, including heavy hitters like Fortnite and Destiny 2. PS3 and Vita games don't support name changes at all.

Sony has also provided a tentative list of games that could present issues for those who change their PSN IDs. Sony says a "large majority of most actively played PS4 games support the feature," and while you can rollback the change, you'll want to be aware of the potential for issues. Sony specifically recommends checking "all" of your games after a name change and requesting a rollback by contacting customer service if you do have issues.

There are two ways to change your PSN ID: on the PS4 itself or via a web browser. Once you've done so, be mindful when jumping into the games below, which are separated into those that have been found to have issues and those with "critical issues."

Games With Issues Identified

Changing your PSN ID may cause the previous ID to remain visible or disappear entirely, user accounts to unlink, and settings to return to default in these games. Sony suggests that signing out and signing back in should resolve these non-critical issues.

One would think that the easy way to do this is simply leaving your PSN name "as is" and display the *new* gamerTag chosen by the subscriber. Right?

Then all games would be able to read the PSN data correctly and the updated gamerTag is just display candy for online purposes. Like a mask.

"Additionally, some parts of the game may function properly."

Can’t wait for the class action lawsuit for people who have had a forced name change losing access to thousands of dollars worth of content they can no longer use.

It's not going to ERASE your trophies or platinum already earned. So fine by me.

@willowvale75: Not that a name change is a huge thing but my God man you Sony apologist are pathetic. A lot of ppl have been waiting years for this feature and this is the crap show they get and you..... By hey its fine by you so all is good.

@ps4x: for some it might be a big deal but for him it's not... You dont have to imply that he's just doing it to defend Sony. Is the name change going on right now a shit show? Oh yea they're doing a pretty crappy job with all the time they had. Is it not a big deal for some? Yes.

Sigh... Sony.. you have been working on rolling this out for nearly 2 years! How did you manage to mess it up. No other gaming service with name changes has this issue...not one.

@nintendians: well.. you should be able to assume like on other platforms and services that changing your name won't break any games at all... And I'd love to be able to to change my name here so image if it was my psn name. The 2k kinda dates it

Avatar image for nintendians

@teamparadox2k: it should be tied to your email instead of the user name instead or contact you if your that user when you change it.

It seems like you can switch between your old and new ID at will and for unlimited times, so if you have issues with a game I guess you need to log in with your old ID to play it and switch back to your new one when done. Not elegant, but the list of games does not seem that big, and it sets up a foundation for ID changes going forward for those that really wanted it.

@girlusocrazy: So it's more like a sub-ID? Because you make it seem like it's not replacing your old ID.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@Vodoo: Yes. It's an alias.

Charging money for name change already is extremely stupid to begin with; Not being able to implement it right is on another level. But who am I to judge the almighty Sony?

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@heqteur: Yeah it's dumb but at least the first time is free, and it's free to switch between IDs that you "own"

Thanks , no issues for GTA5 yeah...

Avatar image for mcnichoj

We already knew like a year ago that it basically breaks all your PS3 game. Had no idea it would effect a good amount of newer games or even Sony's own first party titles.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@mcnichoj: It doesn't break anything on PS3/Vita. It just doesn't show your new ID on PS3/Vita and will always show your old ID, even if you switch to a new one. Nothing changes with the PS3 or Vita and nothing is broken.

@Barighm: what are you gonna flag him for? It's not spam.. it's not harassment.. it's his opinion on the article.

Did he need to post that? Nope... It's a lazy post. That doesn't mean he should be censored and have it deleted.

Technically you're harassing him by asking people to flag without actually asking.

Plus his post was at LEAST semi on topic.. yours isn't..at all.

As for the story I'm not shocked Sony messed up. They do it quite often when it comes to the internet.
