Centipede and Missile Command Movies Are on the Way

We're now sure how or when, though.

Atari has closed a deal with film company Emmett Furla Oasis Films to make movies based on Centipede and Missile Command, two of the company's biggest '80s arcade hits, according to a report from Deadline. (via Eurogamer). The Missile Command movie has been in the works since at least 2011, at which time it was attached to 20th Century Fox and even had writers and a director.

No Caption Provided

It is still very early days for the movies. There is no word yet on if one or both will be animated or live-action, and we don't know anything about a cast, director, or release date. For its part, Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said, "We cannot wait to see the movies come to life."

Randall Emmett, one of the founders of Emmett Furla Oasis Films, said Centipede and Missile Command are "immensely popular titles [that] have been enjoyed by generations of gamers worldwide."

Centipede involves shooting a centipede that is trying to kill you in a field of mushrooms. Missile Command, on the other hand, challenges players to defend a city from a barrage of missiles by shooting them down. How these will be adapted for the big screen remains to be seen.

Emmett Furla Oasis Films was founded in 1998. The company is also working on a Monopoly movie. On the more immediate horizon for the film company is the Martin Scorcese movie Silence, which is now in post-production. It is also behind the upcoming Bruce Willis movie Marauders.

In other news about '80s video games coming to the big screen, a Tetris movie is also in the works. What a time to be alive.

Don't we already have a movie based on Centipede? I thought that was Human Centipede? Maybe I'm wrong...

I'm not even sure how this is possible to be interesting or successful. I mean seriously neither have the popularity or interesting plot(As there really isn't any) to make a film of. I mean hell at least Angry Birds had somewhat of a story and characters and that movie was terrible.

@JackNief: Both of these games had throw away stories written in their manuals on the 2600. It is possible, but it won't be good or even necessary they have the license of these games given that I bet 90% of anybody doesn't know you play a gnome in centipede and the name of the planet the cities you're defending are on in Missile Command is called Zardon. Being that most wouldn't know that (especially because it was only written that way for 2600, in the case of Missile command) why do they even need a license to tell these stories? They could make something similar up and call it something else. No one would care anymore than they already would. Actually they might care more.

Yeah, let's make a movie about a game that was made while the developers were tripping on LSD...

That'll work...

Ya, because Battleship and Pixels were such great films this seemed like the perfect time to license out video game properties for films with vague stories which we can only lightly consider but mostly ignore much like the remakes we attempted to make a few years ago. Not that anybody remembers that they keep doing that.

These movies will be really bad and have little to no connection to the actual video games. You can quote me on that if they ever actually get made.

I hope, as always, they are at least hilariously bad and not boring bad.

What a time to be alive indeed. Watch as all the things that have no stories be made into movies. Well, not really, but they have the same name. What is even the point in obtaining the license for these? You can tell by how "Atari" is now structured that no one really cares about these titles beyond nostalgia.
