CD Projekt Red Admits It Didn't Spend Enough Time On Cyberpunk 2077 For PS4/Xbox One

In a conference call, CD Projekt Red openly said that it focused too heavily on the next-gen console and PC versions of Cyberpunk 2077.

The controversy surrounding the buggy and broken PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077 has continued to dominate headlines over the past few days. Now, developer CD Projekt Red has stated that it focused too much on the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X / Series S versions of the game, which resulted in "not enough time" being spent on the previous-gen versions. [Update: Sony has now removed Cyberpunk 2077 from PSN and will offer refunds.]

"It's more about us looking--as was previously stated--at the PC and next-gen performance rather than current-gen. We definitely did not spend enough time looking at that," a portion of the transcript reads. "Come January and February you’re going to see larger improvements--which we’ve stated already. We have also stated that if your expectation is that the game is going to be equal to, say, next-gen or PC in terms of performance, that definitely isn’t going to happen. Having said that, I’m not saying it’s going to be a bad game--but if you’re expectations regarding, say, visuals or other performance angle, are like this, then we’re openly stating that’s not going to be the case."

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Review

Responding to a question about the certification process that console games go through before release, the CD Projekt Red representative (joint CEO Marcin Iwiński) stated that he "can only assume" that Sony and Microsoft "trusted that we're going to fix things upon release, and that obviously did not come together exactly as we had planned." Some industry figures have called this a subtle attempt to shift blame to the console manufacturers, noting that the certification process has nothing to do with quality. "The game functions," journalist and consultant Mike Futter wrote in response. "It hooks into achievements and trophies. It has the right button icons. Cert and FQA are not about meeting a quality bar."

Previously in the same Q&A, CD Projekt Red stated that it does not have any sort of special agreement with Sony or Microsoft for refunds, urging aggrieved fans to utilize the existing refund policies of these platforms if they are unhappy with Cyberpunk 2077. Players have reported mixed success in obtaining refunds for their digital copies, and physical copies are a completely different story. Check out our Cyberpunk refund guide for details.

It was originally suppose to launch before PS5 and Series-X were even in the stores. How could they spend too little time optimizing it for the generation of consoles it was suppose to launch on?

Gamers are such a toxic, crybaby community. They are so spoiled, its unreal.

If you are a game company and you don't make an absolutely perfect game, the entire community will turn against you, in the blink of an eye. No matter how many other great games you have made.

Also, if you are going to cry about how many hours the workers have to work to make a game (crunching). Don't cry when the games aren't perfect. That's what they were trying to accomplish before you stopped them. They were working on your unrealistically high expectations for the game.

@braceyourself1: If I'm paying for a product, it should be at the very least, finished. Game publishers really love chumps like you. I doubt you even pay for your own games.

@braceyourself1: "If you are a game company and you don't make an absolutely perfect game".

In fairness to gamers, I have heard no complaints that the game isn't absolutely perfect. Please watch some videos on YouTube for base PS4 and XBOX S and you will see that the game is so broken, it is almost completely unplayable. And on every other platform, it's incredibly buggy.

Also, the devs intentionally chose not to show any gameplay on those base systems leading up to release, they only showed PC, PS5, Series X/S gameplay.

While I get your sentiment regarding how gamers sometimes overreact, this is one of those situations where the backlash is 100% appropriate.

Happy holidays! 😀

@thecupidstunts:

I disagree completely with your statement that the game is “incredibly buggy.” And I am playing on an old Intel CPU with an old Nvidia graphic card. Outside of some minor looting bugs and some floating objects the game is very solid for me. I did have a few issues with the game crashing which I was able to resolve by rolling back the Display adapter drivers but that was due to Nvidia releasing some crappy drivers (460.89). After I fixed the Nvidia drivers issue the game was solid to play.

As glitchy as the game is it's still better than Mass Effect Andromeda. EA deserves more flaming Torches. And yet they slip by with their loot boxes and shady practices.

Gamespot's review score doesn't seem that crazy now in retrospect. The review & the reviewer herself got a lot of heat for that score and I'm wondering what people are thinking now. IGN had to do a separate review for Cyberpunk for PS4 & XBOX1 and gave that a 4. That's pretty damning for such a revered developer. Basically, the game is unplayable on base hardware, which is by far the biggest user base in the world right now. Not many people playing on brand spanking new PS5's.

What can I say, game over-reached it's goals and delivered something that will only become something decent after numerous patches, which seems to be the norm these days. I didn't preorder this and I doubt I will ever actually play it anyway. A real shame but it's definitely tarnished CD Projekt Red's reputation.

They know that most people are forgiving anyway. It's just a game at the end of the day.

They should have waited and released it in Jan/Feb on console and just released PC early is the bottom line.

They knew this from the start and took advantage of people because they relied on the fact Witcher 3 turned out to be such a well respected product. People seem to forget how rocky that game's launch was on PC too. Roach wouldn't even jump over a fence.

The bottom line is we need to stop falling for pre-orders and weak promises. Do not pay for anything up front without at least a playable demo available so you know what you are in for.

They already took steps prior to the launch to ensure they wouldn't be losing big at the launch time of the game. They were aware of what would happen to the stock but they are just as aware come February the stock prices will all rise back up again anyway.

The only people out of pocket it seems is those that bought it on PlayStation store due to them being total scumbags about refunds.

This is either the dumbest cop-out in the recent history of gaming, or it's a brilliant commentary on the themes presented in Cyberpunk as a genre.

Probably the former, I don't think anyone is quite clever enough to pull off the latter.

Its clear to me that cd project red is toying with consumers, what they are saying does not make sense. Cyberpunk is in development for many years now, the next gen consoles just arrived, so this was a game meant to be played for ps4 and xbox one, so they had more than enough time to optimize the game for these consoles. Plus we must not forget that both the ps4 and xbox one are very powerful consoles and that is proven by the fact that we have played games on these consoles that were very impressive technically speaking with spectacular graphics, so i don't think that these consoles couldn't run a game like cyberpunk well, we experienced games in this generation like gears 5, last of us part 2, ghost of tsushima, horizon zero dawn, forza horizon 3 and 4 and so on and on, games that we played on the base ps4 and xbox one and they were and still are impressive to witness, so its apparent to me that cd project red did something seriously wrong and only they know exactly what that is, but lying to their customers and bringing forth excuses that do not make sense makes things even worse. They even said to the dissatisfied ps4 and xbox one users out there that they could get a refund for the game without even having agreed such a thing with either Microsoft or Sony, which is another thing that shows that they cannot be trusted.

The last of the mighty has fallen. And people were whining about the low score. LOL. The game is buggy on PC as well. Almost a decade in development and they couldn't take the time to work on it for consoles that were the current gen for most of that development. Sure.

The game should have never been released on PS4 and Xbox One. This game should have been a next generation exclusive. This is one thing I miss about the "good old days" when the next generation had its own games. You did not see Mario World or F-Zero on the NES. This is what new generations are for. You play games that you could not play on previous consoles. The game was hyped for no reason other than the developer behind it. Everyone knew it was going to sell regardless of how good the game was or what state the game was in at launch. People have the attitude of "it is an open world game, we should be happy the game runs on the system at all." If you cannot make a game run on particular hardware, then do not do it. Simple as that. This is why crossgen games are annoying. Make games for specific hardware that can run them well and don't force games on hardware that can't run them.

I'm confused by this. If development really did start 8 years ago, (I'm doubting the veracity of that claim now), then you would think that over half of the development would have been spent on previous gen consoles.

Somewhat hard to believe CDPR lately as relates to this game.

So they didn't feel any pressure to release the game in the state they did, but did it anyway? Are they aware that this doesn't make them look any better? I'd really like to hear what their ultimate reason was for releasing the game in such a broken state because there is no way they could not have known about it.

I also don't see the point in talking about performance issues when the game is filled with bugs on all platforms. How's a next gen console or a $5000 PC supposed to protect you from those?

And what's this crap about some certification process? There's been plenty of equally or even worse games than Cyberpunk and all of them seem to have somehow made it through that "certification process". Seems like as long as you can boot the game up at least once it will pass the certification.

You could argue about all circumstances leading to this mess on base systems.

You let SOME of you customers down period, hopefully it doesn't tarnish your business too much and those customers don't vote with their wallet next time.

Some people were cheated, they knew it, CDPR had a plan to do it, that's why no review codes for consoles were dished out.

Lame

Fix it and stop crying wolf

@PsychoCrushor: Biggest issue with that long to produce a game is how much GPU tech changes in that time frame. It's obvious they spent less time fixing AI than they did about introducing fancy Ray Tracing on PC.

The game may look pretty but it's a shell of what it could have been. Will they even fix the police AI?. I have seen nothing even close to them mentioning this is even an issue being addressed so far.

Bottom line is the game is ok , it's not terrible but it's not great. It has many flaws such as not just being able to go and eat where you want to but only at specific places on the map. Rubbish police presence , Useless NPC's that are just window dressing outside of missions. Way too much pointless loot. Half assed crafting system that is not even really needed.

A rather pointless driving mechanic as there are no police chases or anything remotely interesting to do. You may as well just jump in a taxi outside of a few races.

It's a shame as the shooting is rather good , the whole FPS world is pretty amazing in concept but there are way too many cracks in this sinking ship for it's own good.

The world doesn't feel interactive enough and may as well have just been a set amount of linear missions for the most part.

It should have gotten a 6.5 out of 10 maybe but no more (In it's current state even on PC )

@PsychoCrushor: They had a lot more than 8 years. As they said there was no pressure for them to release the game unfinished. And they certainly could have spent even a few more years on development if they felt they needed to. It's not like the game's development could have ever bankrupted them. Yet after all the time they've already spent on it and multiple delays they still chose to release it in a completely broken state. What were all those delays for? They probably only happened because CDPR severely underestimated the amount of time required to finishing putting in all the content. Who knows when they finally started polishing the game.

@Atzenkiller:

They just didn't want to compete against the game lineup of 2021. The same reason Ubisoft released 3 games for next-gen within a 3-month span. Also, the reason why those same games are already selling about 30 dollars cheaper, "rental" level games.

@kintoneo: Apparently not 49 percent was PC players this time around apparently. Add in a small percentage for stadia , plus ones on next gen systems and the percentage on base consoles is less than you think. Probably 30-35 percent maybe. Those on Pro and Xbox one X excluded which could be 10-16 percent who knows.

I just have to be honest. I'm in early Act II and I have been having a blast with just a few minor glitches and bugs infrequently. I'm playing on the One X and it got even better after the hot fix 1.04. I completely understand the frustration though for those that have had it bad.

Hopefully CDPR fixes things going forward and the game reaches it's full potential.

Maybe they should have done a more focused non open world game with a few branching paths. Not much point having an open world that is largely so empty despite looking so full lol

@sabredj: thanks for the post. I have a one x w/ssd upgrade and I haven't seen a ton about how well it plays. I am a 1 and done type of gamer so I'm not going to start it until I am confident in the experience. Hard to see it sitting next to my Xbox and not playing it but I think it's worth waiting for another patch or 2 before jumping in

@ks253: DF released a vid where the base Xbox One and One X versions are tested.
The base Xbox One version is not recomended. Ocassionaly that version can freeze at times up to 1 minute depending on the stress situation.

From what i saw,the Xbox One X version is in much better state and runs at higher resolution (dynamic) than the PS4Pro version (the lowest dynamic XbX resolution equals the highest PS4Pro resolution) but takes a hit on fps by little bit more as a result. It can hit 30fps but can go down to low 20fps at times(comparable to the PS4Pro version).

I would suggest to wait 1 or 2 patches where the fps are stabilized

@sladakrobot: I tried it on my xbox one x and it was pretty poor - to me anyway after playing on Series X. I was just curious. Driving around in cars was the worst as it made me sea sick with the low framerate on the One X. Just running about and keeping away from cars i noticed it far less and it ran ok but nothing great.

If you can on One X keep away from cars as much as possible and you will probably enjoy the game more.

Watchdogs Legions is also 30 fps yet that actually is rather smooth. Even running at 30 fps Cyberpunk just feels off and controlling cars is like controlling a run away shopping cart with a broken wheel
