Carter, LMB

A profile of Carter, a LMB of The Division, for Stories of The Division. Sponsored by Ubisoft.

"We knew someone in our area of operations was stealing meds, so we secretly swapped in ipecac. Couple days later this guy comes to us scared because his little boy is vomiting. So we knew. He confessed as soon as we confronted him. On his knees, crying, 'I'll never do it again.' Honestly? I hate guys like that. If you're gonna steal, at least man up about it.

"Our LT has a theory: when you're surrounded by chaos, keep your rules simple. And keep the punishment for breaking the rules fast and brutal. For stealing medicine, it's public execution. You make everyone watch, families included. And this time around, he wanted me to do it.

"I forced the guy to his knees in the middle of the street. My whole body was shaking. Seen combat hundreds of times, but that's never happened to me. Caught me off guard. I didn't want anyone to see my hands shaking when I shot him, so I pretended to bow my head in silent prayer until I could calm down. Finally, I lifted my sidearm and aimed. Out the corner of my eye, I see his little boy, the one who was throwing up from the ipecac. He breaks away from his mom and runs to his daddy and hugs him.

"That was it for me. Couldn't do it. I holstered my gun. LT was pissed, but rather than letting my insubordination make him look weak, he made it seem like we'd planned it that way and he decided to show mercy this one time. All I know is, I better not punk out on another order, or I'll be the one who gets shot. If it sounds harsh, that's because it's harsh out here. Thieves, murderers, worse. Total chaos. The government doesn't have the guts or the power to control it anymore. Which leaves us and Command to restore order. And nothing motivates people to behave themselves like the fear of death."

Stories of The Division offers an intimate look into the lives of 20 fictional New Yorkers living in the world of Tom Clancy's The Division.
