Carrie Fisher Will Be In Star Wars: Episode 9, Brother Says [UPDATE]

Disney confirms Fisher won't be in the 2019 film.

[UPDATE] Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Carrie Fisher will not be in Episode IX.

The original story is below.

Following the passing of Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher in December, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy and Star Wars: Episode IX director reportedly met to discuss how to move forward. Now, Fisher's brother, Todd Fisher, said that Fisher will appear as Leia in 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX.

He and Carrie Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, gave the go-ahead to Disney to use "recent footage" of Fisher in Episode IX, Todd said.

"Both of us were like, 'Yes, how do you take her out of it?' And the answer is you don't," Todd Fisher told the New York Daily News. "She's as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan--when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that's what's happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue."

Leia will appear in this year's Star Wars: The Last Jedi; filming finished before Fisher's passing. According to a previous report, Leia is to play a larger role in Episode IX than The Last Jedi, though specifics about her reportedly planned scenes in those movies are unavailable.

In January this year, Lucasfilm released a statement to say that it has "no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher's performance as Princess or General Leia Organa."

"Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family," the statement continued. "She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars."

All these movies that use actors that died always remind me of that one Monty Python sketch.

"...Your controversial claim that Marilyn Monroe would be in your film."

"Oh, ya. She'll show up in the vacuum cleaner, the ashtray..."

The only way to make everyone happy is having Andy Serkis doing motion capture of Leia so she can then be added trough CGI.

Really wasnt into Star Wars Rogue One. Force Awakens was ok. I cant believe they ripped off actual poses and camera shots from the original movies. This new trend, where you MUST have the original cast or exact copied story lines from past movies, to try and appease the nostalgia fans, is very disturbing or is it they are trying to get a new audience interested in the OLD story lines ?????, its really screwed up lol. It feels a little incoherent. It feels really bizarre. Also a new random character is coming a long and telling the rebel leaders what they should do?? that was NEVER a Star Wars thing. It was always the rebel leaders, like Mon Mothma, that were in control of how the rebels fought the empire and Luke and Han and Leia etc, were foot soldiers or special forces units in the rebellion, following orders, to beat the empire. This girl with a sht upbringing comes a long and tells them all what they should be doing????

The new Star Wars movie , for me anyway, feel like junk filler, to fill a void or something, to keep the Star Wars name going. I'm seeing Star Wars, but I'm just not feeling Star Wars, with Rogue One.

@nyran125tk: So you complain that Rogue One is retelling the old stories with "new" people, and yet you think that Force Awakens is fine, even though it tells the exactsame story as a New Hope, just with "new" people?

A lot of it, was just a feeling and a lack of attachment or interest for any of the characters in Rogue One and all the main characters in it, practically die, that could be the reason for the lack of attachment to the characters, sub consciously. There was literal camera shots ripped out of the original Star Wars movies, but placed in different scenarios, it was just weird. K2S0 was fun and entertaining. He had a genuine, stand out individual quality to him. The main girl Jyn. I literally didnt get any feeling from her and the fact she was kind of telling Mon Mothma what the plan should be? She's talking to the main commanders of the rebellion against the empire. It felt like a detached filler side story to me , when it really shouldnt of been, considering what the movie's premise was about. It was the creation of the death star, that's a big deal in the Star Wars universe. Even the main villain Kylo Ren in force Awakens, felt more menacing and more dangerous than Darth Vadar in Rogue One, to me anyway.

Id have to rewatch it again, but i had plenty of issues with Rogue One, that took me out of the experience. It's all opinions at the end of the day.

Really don't like what they're doing here. They snuck it into Rogue One twice and it was kinda surprising and new
"cool," but it's clear they're trying to set a precedent here. I don't think it should be standard for digital representations of people to just pop up all over... Dunno. Bothers me somehow.

Wonder if they will give her that female voice of truck driver mixed with a super plastic surgery face again or if they will lighten her voice up some to how she used to sound before all the aging and drugs.

Her brother didn't really impress me...he had dollar signs in his eyes during all his post death interviews during that week after she and her mom passed. His tone kind of reminded me of con man Don Laprie.

What I'm hoping for with Episode 8, is that it starts with "In the loving memory of Carrie Fisher." before the "A long time ago, in a Galaxy far far away" opening line.

That would be a nice touch, in my opinion..

@joupena: I think he was referring to the fanfiction version where everyone is married to an Ewok by the end.

I had a feeling this would be the case but it's good to know it will definitely go ahead. With CGI and previous footage as well as that not released and cut from the filming she already did they should be able to get what they originally intended albeit not the perfect cuts they intended.

I just hope that they give the family a little money for her presence on screen.

I don't care either way, but I am sure Disney threw some $$$$ their way.

Thnx for the spoiler Gamespot.

I might actually be upset if Force Awakens hadn't already kind of ruined her character.I mean divorcing Han and not even hugging Chewbacca after Han's death? Shamefur.

@Rufus_the_rat: Leia and Carrie both changed a lot after the original trilogy was completed. There was that time when Carrie didn't care about anything so I guess with the new trilogy they decided to continue from that. The sweet naive girl turns into an adult.

This totally takes away the magic though. Luke, Leia, Han and the rest were like epic superheroes but now they're just common folks with a past.
