Capcom: Resident Evil 6 successful 'to some degree'

Publisher says record setting shipments of new action game make it somewhat successful; "too early" to make judgement regarding critical response.

Resident Evil 6 did not win praise across the board at launch last month, but the game shipped a Capcom record 4.5 million copies initially. This equals success to "some degree," according to comments from the publisher recently during a question and answer session.

No Caption Provided

"Resident Evil 6 continues to generate repeat sales in Japan and overseas. Furthermore, initial shipments set a new record for a Capcom title. So this game has been successful to some degree," reads a line from the response.

Regarding the game's critical response, Capcom isn't yet ready to make a judgement.

"We therefore believe it is too early to reach a conclusion about how users view this game. We always listen carefully to the feedback from users and use this information when developing game," the statement reads.

RE6 is part of the new wave of games that caters to instant gratification. These games are for weaklings and retards with no ability for self restraint, patience and personal investment. No more appeal to higher cognitive abilities and just pure pleasure that gets cheaper and worn out the more you play. The truth is, people who own these gaming companies are not real gamers but Wallstreet rejects. They're in it for the money only but by being greedy and catering to the lowest common denominator, they are planting the very seed of their industry's destruction.

@sashimiboy1969 They should've made the RE4 style of RE a spinoff series, and kept making actual survival horror games.

Silent Hill is no good anymore, either. It hasn't gone down the crapper quite as fast as RE has, but it's close.

Silent Hill Downpour is much better then this game, it wasn't great but it was goo or better than average. Atleast after playing Silent Hill DP I wanted more and kept playing it, RE6 i'm trying to find something to make me want to play the game.

I think there's still some life left in Silent Hill, despite many missteps. In fact, I enjoyed SH: Downpour quite a lot. The story was creepy and kept me guessing, and although the monster designs were crap the exploration was creepy and the atmosphere disturbing enough. I hope they can inject some life into the franchise down the road, bring it back to full glory :)

Sigh... when will people learn that BRAND NAME doesn't equal quality?

Listen to what Capcom is saying. They don't even care whether or not people BUY the game, they just wanted to ship enough copies to retailers based on hype alone. Whether it was good or bad doesn't even matter to them, just that brand loyalty would ensure retailers would request extra copies.

This is why CoD can release annual games without making any real innovative changes, or how Final Fantasy is still in the XIII universe despite mixed fan reception. These companies know that loyal fans will buy it no matter what, so why bother to put real effort or ingenuity into it?

CoD could have new and exciting shooting mechanics (first-person cover system perhaps?), or an in-depth campaign with a fresh setting. Final Fantasy Versus XIII could have been given the resources to finally be completed, or they could even just move on to a new universe with FFXV rather than stay in the established XIII universe AGAIN.

And Resident Evil 6 could have been a focused, intense game rather than a mashup of marketing ploys (zombies and darkness in one campaign, an awful version of Gears of War in another, and a Gears/Uncharted/QTE wannabe mashup in another) enacted to attract casual gamers, a coveted market for publishers. Resident Evil has now become easy (never ending ammo, suplex/melee moves easily dispatch enemies), over the top (hanging out of a helicopter shooting at a minigun-toting-mutant hanging from another helicopter), and unimaginative (the story involves "Neo-umbrella" and Wesker's son? Really? That's the best they could come up with?). I gave up after trying a few hours of each campaign, I was so disheartened.

Please, people. Don't be a blind fan, don't just accept a bad game because it has "Resident Evil" (or whatever franchise you hold dear) slapped on the cover. I think this is a bad game, on it's own or as a RE game, and I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But don't let franchise loyalty and marketability shroud judgement or destroy our beloved games and franchises. Otherwise Capcom and all those other publishers will continue this practice of only caring about "shipping" games rather than "selling" them to you.

@BrickMcIronhard i think you are really judging the game because of the video review, I really don't like capcom sometimes because of their DLC spam on some games, dumbed down mechanincs, etc, but as a reasonable person this game isn't really that bad, The "i always have ammo" is not true because unless you are playing the game like rambo or playing with the infinite ammo option getting ammo can be a pain sometimes especially because of the annoying skillpoints on crates, missing shoots is not an option sometimes (in certain areas) it suffers the typical "it has to please everyone" case and then the game gets mixed feelings, i finished the game yesterday and i have mixed feelings about it too, the QTE's are sometimes excessive in certain parts of the game but won't find them in the entire game, the camera was my main problem because it was really annoying on closed areas, the plot wasn't that bad (not great either), chris is a BSAA soldier is common sense to expect some action in the game with him and his team, yeas the action cutscenes can be annoying sometimes but the game is really long and fun sometimes, Capcom has bad fame in the gaming community, is really simple to bash the game based on that, but maybe you people can play it even as a rental before making some extreme conclusions about it, i don't like dumbed down games and extreme casual content sometimes but the game is not really that bad, not being a fanboy here, just trying to be reasonable.

@alenth You said: " i think you are really judging the game because of the video review" and "maybe you people can play it even as a rental before making some extreme conclusions about it"

As I said in my previous comment, I DID PLAY THE GAME. I didn't watch any video reviews, I borrowed the game from a friend and we played a few hours of each of the three main campaigns. I didn't like it for all of the reasons I explained in the comment before (bad control mechanics, lack of challenge, half-baked and uninspired story, over-the-top sillyness, etc.), which are my opinions based on the 8-10 hour chunk of game that I played. You kind of jumped to the conclusion that I'm hating on the game on a contrarian basis, like some kind of hipster, using only Gamespot's low-scoring review as a basis for judgement. I'm not. I genuinely dislike the game, based on actual playing experience. I've been a RE fan since 1996 on the original Playstation, and I think RE6 is a poor quality game from both a franchise standpoint AND just an all-around action game standpoint. If they were going to change up the RE formula, they could have at least tried to do it competently.

@BrickMcIronhard sorry then, but i still think that the game offers a lot of content and is fun sometimes, the game is not really that terrible is only that some people are really tired of the action genre.

@BrickMcIronhard @alenth It's like the gaming version of Roland Emmerichs 2012. Big Name, Big Cutscenes and instead of John Cusack running away from Lava you get Jake Mueller running away from Ustanak for 6 1/2 hours. I've played through Leon's and Jake's now and am halfway through Chris' and I cringe just thinking about playing it again.

Agreed. I'm a big fan of the classic Resi games and the survival horror genre but didn't buy RE6 or even consider RE ORC because they were clearly going in a completely different direction to the way us fans want the games to be.

They should rename it to Resident Evil: Quick Time Event Editiion. This game is garbage, there is more of this annoying gameplay instead of the shooting gameplay. I'm glad I didn't pay a penny for this game!

I want the serie to stick to what made RE awesome. But I admit after renting it,playing with 2 of my friends split-screen its fun and the game LOOKS really good. Gameplay is over the top imo and I miss the atmosphere, camera angles, exploration and puzzles from the previous titles. Re6 is a fucking linear co-op bs made to enjoy with friends

Yeap, money=sucess, MW3 has sold more than RE6 and it's not a good game at all. (I own it) these games sold because they are loved franchises, nothing else. RE stopped being a good game after the 4th one.

Yes the 4th one was when the series declined, however, some of the monsters ( the regenerator and the blind guy) were pretty scary, you've got to admit that.

If RE : ORC can sell in high number despite the number of bugs and bad gameplay it had based on the franchise name alone. Then dont worry Capcom RE6 will sell. Man unless they reboot the series or take it back to its survival roots like RE : Revelations I am done with the series.

I like this game. I get the games have changed, less survival, less scary, more action. This game is definitely far from perfect, but I still think its an enjoyable game, especially with a friend. But to most people that means I'm some 14 year old kid who only likes easy games with QTE. I would like to see RE go back to its horror roots, I just think this game is being bashed way to harshly IMO. Either way, maybe Capcom will see all the complaints and maybe make the series more horror survival in the next games (if they make others).

@Tribesmaster agree, the problem is that to much hate comes from the reputation of capcom and other cases (megaman, emo dante, DLC spam, etc), the game is not bad not great either, it suffers the "it has to please everyone" case, just like other games.

They need to get that "survival horror feeling,' like in Night of the Living Dead, at the end there are hordes of zombies battering the farmhouse to pieces. Same adrenaline during the cabin battle in RE 4, I remember the first time I played that, I'm saying "Oh sh*t, we have a situation here."

I remember EB games having a return policy for 3 days after you purchased the item you can return it for a full refund. This would be a game I wish I could return. I'm a huge RE fan and RE was my first game for the playstation 1, however the series has changed and does not have the gameplay/atmosphere of what I came the love, I would pick this up at a later date for $29, but not $59. MY most anticpated game became my worst game in my collection. Though I have only played single player, but co-op can make a bad game better when your playing with friends but 3 of my friends already returned it, I'm not one who return games, maybe the DEC will fix some of the issues.

My biggest disappointemnts were the: QTE, unnatural responses when using any type of vehicles, horrible camera angles, and every scene were you had to run away from a boss and your placement on the screeen couldn't be determined because of the uncontrolled camera angles, and the most important... the game had 0% survival horror or scare/fear factor. I palyed all four campaigns and a 3 runs in mercenaries, the only thing I like that makes me want to replay it, is the fact you can unlock perks which I love in video. But still this is not enough to make me keep playing,

Sounds like wishful thinking on Capcom's end.

"We therefore believe it is too early to reach a conclusion about how users view this game. We always listen carefully to the feedback from users and use this information when developing game,"

Obviously they haven't listened well enough, even more so with the weird parents vs kids metaphor they were using in response to unhappy fans.

I really try to like Resident Evil 5 & 6 but after knowing Capcom isn't planning to return the series back to its survival horror root, I just don't have that interest in the franchise anymore. Resident Evil Revelation was a little bit step in the right direction and Leon's campaign in RE6 was a good run through but instead of giving us a little of the past, Capcom is just sprinkling in too much action in the series.

Remember Capcom, I play Resident Evil not to be badass, I play it because I want to experience horror. Don't give the player the advantage by giving unlimited ammos, powerful weapons, countless allies, and make the zombies act silly, easy to kill or ridiculous, I want to have the disadvantage, I want the dark atmospheres, the feeling of survival, the worry of limited ammo, the fear of "Oh boy, now what, there's 50 zombies outside and I'm stuck inside this building" kind of feeling. Bring that feeling back and you can have my dollars again.

It's not as simple as many think, a "haters" thing. It's a major issue we are all complaining about. Great franchises are back stabbing their fan base, abandoning the mechanics that built the fan base in the first place to make some CoD wannabe action flick, cinematic, QTE crap.

CoD started this trend, which is just them so its ok, that's their identity and game style, but then all FPS followed the trend, which was a bad thing for gaming, but even worse is that non FPS genres like RE and even Tomb Raider followed, completely transforming their games to cater to the children masses of CoD.

They should have just made a new CoD wannabe IP and be respectful to the fan bases that made the franchises what they are. I usually don't have bad wishes for anyone, but I really hope all "shipped" copies stay sitting in store shelves forever, maybe then they will be more respectful to their fan bases.

Just go back to the classic formula and your sales will double easily. Or remake 2 and 3 just like you did 1 and you'll have huge hits. Abe's odyssey is being remade with improved graphics, but core gameplay remaining the same, I guarantee that is going to be a HUGE success.

Yep too many people buying just because they love a brand . It does not matter if that brand actually is any good anymore . Lets just buy it to support . Because Capcom shareholders need money without a yearly release their kids would not eat . And we wonder why these company do not listen to us . Keep spending your parents money"s fanboys.
