Capcom: Dead Rising 4 Underperforms, But Revenue And Profit Still Rise

The Japanese publisher posts a year-over-year increase for revenue and profit.

Japanese video game giant Capcom today announced earnings results for its fiscal year ended March 31. Revenue rose 13.2 percent to ¥87.17 billion, while net income also saw an improvement, rising 14.6 percent to ¥8.8 billion compared to the same period last year.

Games that had a had a "solid performance" during the fiscal year include Resident Evil 7 and Monster Hunter XX, Capcom said. Additionally, the ports of older Resident Evil games for new consoles "performed well," the publisher said in its announcement. These were not mentioned by name, though it's likely a reference to the re-releases of Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6.

What didn't turn out so well was Dead Rising 4. The newest entry in the zombie series for Xbox One and PC "underperformed," Capcom said. In February, Capcom acknowledged the mixed reaction to Dead Rising 4, saying its "more approachable" nature did not resonate with everyone.

Dead Rising 4 came out in December for Xbox One and PC. Capcom expected the game to ship 2 million units by the end of March, though it's unclear if that figure was met.

Resident Evil 7, Monster Hunter XX, and Dead Rising 4 all failed to meet their sales targets, according to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad.

Looking ahead, Capcom said it will "strengthen digital download sales and increase our pipeline of major title releases according to our medium-term strategic map."

For the current fiscal year, Capcom is expecting even more revenue and profit than it made this year. The company is modeling net sales of ¥93 billion and operating income of ¥14.5 billion for the year ending March 31, 2018.

Capcom operates a number of businesses. In addition to video games, the company has businesses units dedicated to Arcade and Amusement, as well as an "other" category. The numbers in this post represent sales for all units combined.

Well it's not like Capcom are psychics. How were they supposed to know making a game with less features than the rest in the series wouldn't resonate well with fans?

Bought RE7 because it was Play Anywhere. Skipped Dead Rising because it was not.

Publishers take notice!!

Resident Evil 7 is a gem. But because the gaming community is made up of weekend warriors, single men with no dating prospects, men in a mid-life crisis, and COD fanatics, it's hard for games like this to do well.

But then again, since when is a game that sells nearly 4 million copies a failure? It's stupid world, the gaming one.

Hmmm.. lower the full retail price of games and you will magically see more people buying games before they end up on sale, used or clearance somewhere.

Funny how when they dumb down a game to make it more "accessible" it ends up like crap and nobody likes it save for a handful of people who just want to shut off their brains and smash zombies. The problem is if you wanna do that you can just play one of the millions of free smartphone games where you can smash zombies.

Dead Rising 4 needs to be all platforms same as street Fighter V non of this exclusive crap. Also cap com are greedy and won't allow backwards compatibility on 360 so you have to buy all your games again if you want to play them (if they allowed it and knock 50% new versions they could make a lot of money) I bought res 4-6 again but only when on sale for £10 for all 3 as wanted to play 5 and 6 with a m8 that's new to res evil and res evil 4 fun to play on your tod (but when I already owned them on 360 ouch). Ithink people have got wise and wait for sales these days as games are becoming to expensive (makes me laugh as they still made a bigger profit this year lol).

@balders74: There is actually a couple backwards compatible Capcom games like Dead Rising: Case Zero and Case West, Street Fighter IV and Capcom Arcade Cabinet. But yea, none of the ones they are remastering. Personally all I really wanna see go BC that Capcom has published is Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen and Remember Me.

Dead Rising 4 is so bad. Dead Rising 3 is much better. Who wants to go around taking pictures inside a game... And the stick deadzone for aiming is still around 50% lol

I for one completely forgot about Dead Rising 4---and I didn't even know it was for sale only on the MS store.

If it was in Steam as well, I would have at least known about the product.

Avatar image for catsimboy

@mbrogz3000: It IS on Steam, the problem is it's still garbage so nobody cares about it.

Avatar image for mbrogz3000

@catsimboy: well..I'm probably never going to play it anyway unless it becomes a $6 game. The only one I ever really cared about was Dead Rising 1 and that was mainly because of its ridiculously interesting story, and the quirkiness of its very mechanical gameplay elements which actually became quite fun. 2nd one was just ok... and I don't know anything about the 3rd one, and if the 4th one quality consensus is that it's garbage, I don't really even care then.

Avatar image for catsimboy

@mbrogz3000: DR4 has none of the quirkiness that DR1 had, now it's just a run-of-the-mill open world action game that just happens to have zombies in it. It's all about boring combat with overpowered combo items and going around finding collectibles like it's an Ubisoft game.

In DR1 you'd use the random mall items to get through swarms of zombies, whether they died or not was incidental to your movement throughout the mall. In DR4 you use god-tier combo weapons to rack up kill counts in the tens of thousands like it's a friggin Dynasty Warriors game.

dead rising 4 is under-performing because its on hardware thats no good for business. pc owners pirate it as much as possible so sales are down there and there's not enough user base on xbox one and the problem with xbox fan boys is they never actually buy the software they just cry in the comment section. release the franchise on multi-format. im sure itd be welcome on the nintendo switch and theres also the ps4 were the user-base is off the chain.

Avatar image for darthrevenx

@s7eventhheaven: the real reason DR4 failed is they tried to broaden their fanbase by changing key aspects of the game to suit some players like me but....

the truth it while I was never a fan of the time limit restriction I also never cared for the whole dealing with crazies or all the little tedious BS the games throw at you......I was never gonna be a fan of it so them trying to get people like me was foolish.....they should have stuck with the actual fans.....I tried DR2 OTR and it was boring as F......

so yeah had DR4 came to multiple platforms and hit Steam on PC not the MS store nobody likes it might have done better....for a greedy company like Capcom it's kinda hilarious to see em be surprised they didn't get what they wanted by limiting their pool.....they put a Gundam in the kid pool and the thing crushed the pool in the process and they lost most of the water.....

the pool being the people, the gundam being the game, the water being profits......lol and using gundam was random....

@s7eventhheaven: It underperformed on PC and Xbox One because it sucks bad. Dead Rising 3 is much better. Also the only thing they advertised was that Frank was back, which only old hardcore fans care about, who are almost no one.

Avatar image for MetaMods

@s7eventhheaven: Please provide sources that saying PC owners pirated? Why can't we said it's didn't sell well on Xbox One? It was release on Xbox One first before PC. It was under perform on Xbox one and then Capcom decide to bring to the PC to create some more revenue, which also fails. So please don't even post something like that

Avatar image for s7eventhheaven

@MetaMods: i have great respect for developers and support the game industry by buying the games i enjoy, mostly buy digital as i dont buy second hand as the developer make nothing to help support future products. i am unable to post links to illegal copies of software but can assure you the number of people who have downloaded is more than half its total sold pc sales. i bought the game for xbox one but agree with many on here that it felt like an add-on to dead rising 3 which i prefered. they also removed co-op which offended lots of fans. it also didnt help that the game got banned from sale in some countries so they have to import the game (germany comes to mind)

Avatar image for romeothebeast

@@s7eventhheaven: Do you have proof that PC players didn't buy Dead Rising 4 because they chose to pirate it instead? I was under the assumption that the DRM and being exclusive to the windows store is what caused it to sell so poorly on PC. Also, Windows 10 was a requirement for this game until it was released on Steam last month.

I do agree with you though that 3rd party games should be on as many platforms as possible. I am not a fan of these times exclusive games. In due time I am sure it will be on PS4 and hopefully the Switch.

Avatar image for jesterofbass

@s7eventhheaven: DR4 also underperformed because it got very "meh" reviews. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it did start to drag after a while and the last boss fight was tedious and by the time the credits rolled I thought "thank god it's over" lol

Though multi-format is always the best option from a consumer standpoint. Exclusivity in general is bad for gamers.

Picture this: RE7 gets ONE more "banned footage" tape, free, like 6 months from now with very little fanfare or notice. You download it, and it's called "Banned Footage Vol. 3: RC '98".

Open it, load it up....... and it's a demo for the RE2 remake. Coming 2018. Pre-order now.

LISTEN TO ME CAPCOM. I'LL MAKE YOU A FORTUNE.

Their sale targets are too high.

Avatar image for jesterofbass
JesterOfBass

@Sozialminister: Exactly. They're piggybacking off the sales of RE5 and 6, which were decidedly more action than horror and appealed to a wider audience regardless of how "good" they actually were.

Avatar image for jesterofbass
JesterOfBass

RE7 not meeting the goal, while disappointing, isn't exactly shocking. Yes, RE5 and RE6 were the top selling Capcom games, pretty much ever. But if you're gonna do a complete tonal shift back to horror, then like it or not you're arguably shrinking the audience it will appeal to. If it's not shooty explody "Gears of Evil" with co-op then some people will just refuse to play it.

I loved it, personally, and I'm responsible for 2 copies of that 3.5 million (one for PS4 and one for Windows 10) but unfortunately I didn't have the cash to buy another 500,000 at the time. lol

This time around I really hope that Capcom takes note of the reception to the game, and not JUST sales figures. RE6 got mostly bland reviews (including a 4/10 on GS) but it sold like gangbusters anyway. While 7 doesn't have the numbers (yet) it was definitely more well received by pretty much everyone. I really hope going forward they stay on the RE7 side of the fence thematically. Keep it horror.

Avatar image for romeothebeast

@jesterofbass: Another thing they did was make the VR portion a timed exclusive for the PS4. Doing silly deals like that will always hurt their overall sales number in my opinion.

Avatar image for jesterofbass
JesterOfBass

@romeothebeast: Very true. Though if PSVR ever comes down in price I wouldn't be surprised if RE7 gets a slight bump in sales numbers as it's arguably the most complete experience you can find on the platform right now. Unfortunately, considering the scarcity of headsets to this day I doubt it'll get any cheaper anytime soon.

@spartanx169x: oh I know why. Saved a bunch of money on level design, testing, etc. guessing it probably cost them a lot of money too given the speed of your response ;)

@bickle2: I was all excited about buying it until I learned they had removed it. I then took it off my "Must buy" list. I doubt if I will pick it up at all. But I loved DR3. So I might pick it when it hits basement bargain prices(maybe $5 on Steam).

with dead rising 4 it was like they said lets take everything that set the series apart from others and everything that made this game intense and fun and lets get rid of it. And then Frank can run around forever and kill zombies..... idiots.

I think it's becoming obvious the whole Zombie genre is getting so stale, it's time to stop making Zombie games as it is, even I don't think Dead Island 2 will be a smashing it due to it's late development. Overall, I didn't expect Dead Rising 4 to be yet a hit mainly gamers are just getting sick of Zombie games and Dying Light was the only Zombie game that was a huge hit and probably the last great Zombie game as well.

Avatar image for asneakypoptart

@davillain-: I don't think the zombie genre as a whole is getting stale, people are just expecting more from zombie games now. Dead Rising 4 didn't do anything new or exciting from previous DR games and is one of the many reasons it performed poorly. State of Decay 2 looks like an amazing game is honestly at my #1 wanted games this year. It's not all about killing zombies and I think that's why the first one sold extremely well.

Avatar image for spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@davillain-: The problem with DR4 is the removed the coop for the campaign. I have spent many many hrs on past DR games playing coop. You can't enjoy the humor of the game nearly as much if you can't share that experience with your friends. Imagine removing coop from Borderlands 2, what the backlash would be. Similarly the removal of splitscreen AKA couch coop hurt Halo 5' sales. Developers somehow have forgotten that playing coop is significant to some series. As a side note, the removal of LAN play from the current XB1 has done it no favors. My friends would often have xbox LAN parties no internet needed no XBL gamertag needed. I think if the XB1 had it would be a good selling point.

Avatar image for restatbonfire

@davillain-: nah zombie games are still dope just poorly executed. Left4dead 3 is gonna be bitchin. (Even if theyre considered infected, not zombies) also whenever capcom decides to give resident evil it's zombies back

Really hoping RE7’s “under performance” (and I use that term very loosely; mostly thanks in part to Capcom's expectations that it would sell 500,000 more units.) doesn’t reinforce to the high ups over at Capcom that they should once again go down a more action oriented path for the series, much like we witnessed in RE5 or 6.

Unlike probably any RE game before it RE7 was different in that it was a major installment that had a huge amount of skepticism and disinterest in it before it even launched (mostly thanks in part to the negative reception RE6 garnered.). Personally speaking, I really hope Capcom doesn’t take this approach. As a long-time fan of the series RE7 was probably the most fun I’ve had with a resident evil title since Code Veronica. I must have already play through it 5 or 6 times already.

Thanks to all the positive reviews and strong word of mouth I’m optimistic that this game will have “long legs” in terms of sales. As one of those people who themselves was skeptical that Capcom could deliver a finished product that truly captured the fun, feel, and nostalgia of what Resident evil was all about I would hate to see the series once again shift gears to something that Capcom believes at the end of the day will just sell more copies, regardless of the content or quality.

-KEEP IT SURVIVAL HORROR NINJA APPROVED-

Avatar image for craigtl

@videogameninja: I think if nothing else they learned to keep it survival horror. To me, RE7 even with all the big changes it was the truest resident evil we have had since the PS1 days. 4 was great but the fear factor wasnt as strong for me. When I first played through bio hazard and got to the main house with Jack I was scared for Ethan. Like at one point I had to tell myself to just go because I was crouched down in a corner hiding like a little bitch (you know the stairs leading to the basement). Thats when I knew I loved it....... but I really did feel like a bitch for a minute..... I even told my wife about it the next morning and started the story over that night so she could see.

Been a fan of the dead rising series since the first game bought dead rising 4 on release and finished the frank rising dlc last weekend. In my opinion its the weakest in the series but still a good game i'd give it a 6.5/10
