Capcom copied Splosion Man - Twisted Pixel dev

Studio derides Capcom Mobile's MaXplosion iOS game as "cheap imitation," programmer says it outright steals design from 2009 Summer of Arcade standout.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

In 1993, Capcom sued Data East in the U.S. District Court for copyright infringement, saying that the Japanese publisher's Fighter's History arcade game ripped off its own arcade fighting game, the massively popular Street Fighter II. Now Capcom finds itself on the other end of a gaming plagiarism flap, as its latest mobile game has a number of Twisted Pixel Games developers crying foul.

This is MaXplosion.
This is MaXplosion.

Last week, Capcom Mobile released MaXplosion for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, a game with distinct similarities to Twisted Pixel Games' 2009 Xbox 360 game Splosion Man. Both games feature a naked, monochromatic protagonist who spontaneously explodes to jump, can explode up to three times before touching the ground to recharge, and has been trapped in a lab by mad scientists.

Yesterday, Twisted Pixel cofounder and CEO Mike Wilford was critical of Capcom's game in a Twitter post, saying, "Not sure what to say about MaXplosion. Pisses me off. Guess we're just gonna have to make a better iPhone game than them. Shouldn't be hard."

This is Splosion Man.
This is Splosion Man.

He added that Twisted Pixel had originally pitched Splosion Man to the publisher, only to have Capcom pass on it. Wilford wasn't the only member of Twisted Pixel taking MaXplosion to task on Twitter. The studio's general Twitter account explained the delayed reaction to the game, saying, "We're too busy making original games to notice cheap imitations." Meanwhile, Twisted Pixel programmer Mike Henry posted his own misgivings with MaXplosion, saying "That game is a complete theft."

As of press time, Capcom has not provided a comment addressing the games' similarities.

I'm not sure if Capcom was just the publisher and was working with an independent developer or if Capcom made the game themselves.

Imitation is the greatest form of compliment. As long as you do your idea better than anybody else, it'll sell better.

Tsk tsk tsk.Capcom what have you become?I once adored the company you were,as i'm sure many others did as well. You made the games people wanted to play. Now you steal the ideas from other companies that make games people want to play?Oh how you have fallen from grace.I side with T.P. on this one. Stick to the fighting games Capcom.

It really doesn't matter, Splosion Man is a classic and as long as they improve on it, it already has a name. Capcom will probably make their game too hard core and not classic enough to make a name for itself.

Actually, Twisted Pixel can create a iPhone App version of 'Splosion Man, and then complain to Apple that Capcom is stealing its original idea. There's no need for a court case. Twisted Pixel just needs to convince Apple to take MaXplosion off iApp.

They should just sue them and get their money. lol!! It's obviously a copy cat game. Capcom just didn't want to pay Twisted Pixel for it. What a bunch of thieves.

I'm on Twisted Pixel's side on this, but Wilford is looking like a major tool with that statement. You don't act like a tough guy and mock the other side with a complete lack of wit. He sounds like an angry 6th grader.

I definitely smell a lawsuit coming. Twisted Pixel MAY say that there's no lawsuit coming, but that doesn't mean people smell something happening in the future.

@Black_Knight_00 Capcom never went after SNK because SNK never outright stole any of their ideas. SNK games where of the same genre, but any fan of fighting games from that time period would be able to see the differences. And both companies did the smart thing years later in joining together to make one hell of a killer fighting game series anyway (although one is superior to the other). And I do remember that Capcom did go after some company (data east I believe? Help me out here Old Heads!!!) in the early 90's for an arcade fighter, which they contested about something in a similar manner to what this article says. It's funny that almost 20 years later they would resort to the same dirty tactics :?

Wow, this is what passes for news nowadays? I'm just looking down this page and laughing at all of the apparent corporate critics giving their social commentary on something they have never been part of, I love how deluded the human race is :L Get real people, this is menial and pathetic, none of you should care.

Well if everything the article says is true, it's undoubtedly a complete rip off. Pathetic, Capcom. You were the ones who said Japanese developers were falling behind. This is not the way to get ahead.

This sums it up well......... Twisted Pixel CEO Michael Wilford says his comparatively tiny team won't be suing mega-publisher Capcom for its blatant attempt to rip off the studio's Splosion Man with iOS clone MaXplosion (pictured). "We're definitely not going to pursue legal action," Wilford told Joystiq. "While I think the similarities are pretty nauseating, we're too small to take on a company like Capcom. That, and we owe them one for inventing Mega Man, so we'll let them slide." "We just need to keep our heads down making the next thing so that Capcom has something to steal next year,"

WOW. I've not played MaXplosion... but I've played Splosion Man (and loved it) but this does seem very close to a rip off... especially considering that Twisted Pixel pitched their game to Capcom who passed on it... showing that someone at Capcom had seen this concept before MaXplosion hit. On the flip side, this sort of thing is not unheard of. Look at Gameloft who has made a mint by making games that are basically off brand versions of other games. They have made games "inspired" by Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Grand Theft Auto, Diablo, Modern Warfare just to name a few. And you don't see them catching much heat for it... It is the way of things. It may be wrong. But it is pretty rampant in entertainment for companies to try to copy what has been successful properties from their competitors.

@mjc0961 I'd say get things straight first. Twisted pixel has only been around for four years or so and has come out with three pretty respectable arcade titles, all very original. The Maw, Splosion Man, and Comic Jumper have all done well for them selves and all were released in only two years which is pretty interesting considering how diverse they are. Sometimes people like making sequels, it happens. Ever heard of Bungie and their sequels, and then going 2 games beyond it? The whole point is get your info straight before you start vomiting on the boards because you didn't like Splosion Man. I'm not even much of a fan but I think were all sick of these big video game company's stealing ideas and eating up the recent start ups because they provide actual competition and move the industry forward.

Noooooooo, Capcom why!?!! Don't compromise your honor for mobile phone gaming! Come on! To have passed on it to the developers and then to release it on another platform is doubly stupid. I hope they offer proper compensation to Twisted Pixel for this transgression, or they shall forever lose respect points in my book.

I'm up for more games like Splosion man. It's a unique platformer, humourous, and has great co-op. However, I think it's awful that they have such an obvious rip off. I'm fine with the jump mechanic being the same, it works well, however give a different reason for being allowed to jump like that, don't have the same story, and don't have a similar title.

That's pretty sad. How desperate do you have to be to rip off a game as simple as that? Or maybe whoever sat in at the meeting at Capcom had a dream about the idea for the game and forgot that he booted the people out who pitched it to him and thought it was his own. Stranger things have happened.

yeah. fail... kinda makes me want to download the game before they take it off the store. I mean... I liked Splosion Man so I should like the copy right? but yeah... it seems like capcom totally dropped they ball. I mean the guys who made Splosion man actually showed CAPCOM this game and they said no. if it was some company who never met with Twisted Pixel it would be a different story.
