2019's Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, reboots the classic sub-series later this year. But you won't have to wait until the game's launch in October to try it out, as the alpha test is available to download and play now for PS4 owners. The test was officially announced during the Gamescom 2019 Opening Night Live event, where it was confirmed that the alpha test for Modern Warfare will take place starting on Friday, August 23 and conclude on Sunday, August 25. It's free for all PS4 players, even those without a PS Plus subscription. [Update: The alpha actually went live sooner than expected, becoming available for players beginning on Thursday. Regardless, it's now Friday, and you can dive into the multiplayer test as soon as you have it downloaded.]
The alpha only features Gunfight, which is the new fast-paced 2v2 multiplayer mode for the game--five maps are also included in the test. We recently got hands-on with Gunfight mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and you can read about our experience and how it changes things for the series.
For all the details, check out the official PlayStation blog post outlining the details and general tips for those looking to get into the alpha. For more on the game overall, be sure to read our impressions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Ground War 20v20 mode and how night-time maps bring a fresh take to the long-running FPS franchise.
A few new screenshots were also published ahead of the alpha test, and you can take a look at them below. A Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta test is also on the way in September. This will be open to players on all platforms, although pre-ordering on PS4, Xbox One, or PC will get you early access. The full game launches on October 25.
