Now Playing: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Release Date And Campaign Details - GS News Update

This year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare might be reintroducing a single-player campaign to the mix--and adding in some new co-op features--but it will not feature a Zombies mode. Campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff said in a new interview that the "out-there" nature of Zombies modes in previous games doesn't exactly fit with Infinity Ward's ambition of making a gritty, realistic game.

"Because they focus on more of the stylized, graphic novel, super-hero experience, they can have the much more 'out there' different types of gameplay in their games," Minkoff told PlayStation Lifestyle about the games that Zombies creator Treyarch makes. "But for us, we're trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don't have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game."

Minkoff said having a Zombies mode in Modern Warfare would "compromise" the developer's vision for the game. "That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today's conflicts and things we face," he said.

Apart from being tons of fun, the Zombies modes in previous Call of Duty games have provided players a chance to play together in co-op. Thankfully, the new Modern Warfare will offer co-op gameplay opportunities, but Infinity Ward isn't ready to talk about them. "What I will tell you is that the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline. No stop. The events just continue. So those elements--gameplay, progression, story--they just continue throughout everything that we have on the disc or digital download," Minkoff said.

That is a theme of Modern Warfare. Unlike previous games that have siloed off campaign and multiplayer into their own distinct buckets, Modern Warfare will unite all of its modes. As we reported, Infinity Ward said it's going for "continuity and consistency" across all modes in Modern Warfare. Weapons will feel and handle the same whether you're in single or multiplayer. Progressing your character, unlocking killstreaks, and increasing your levels with different guns will track across all modes, so you won't feel penalized for preferring single player over multiplayer or vice versa.

It is not surprising that the new Modern Warfare doesn't have a Zombies mode, as the previous Modern Warfare titles also did not offer this (though Infinity Ward's Infinite Warfare did). Treyarch created the Zombies mode, and it is a mainstay of the Black Ops series.

While it is now confirmed that Modern Warfare doesn't have a Zombies mode, it's unknown if the game will have its own battle royale mode. Black Ops 4 had Blackout as its battle royale mode. Unlike that game, the new Modern Warfare has a dedicated campaign mode.

In other news, it's been confirmed that the new Modern Warfare supports cross-play and that it will not have a season pass. For lots more, check out the story linked below.

I stopped caring about zombies when they learned how to run...

Just like Modern Warfare 2 after the Nazi zombies of WaW, some people may just boot up the previous game instead of having a tantrum if they want to gun zombies. Now if you're going into a realistic gritty aproach, don't circle around not giving locations like in the first Modern Warfare. Don't take the Herge route if you want to be realistic, stay consistent.

I love this. He pretty much just told us exactly what the co-op is. :)

I'm really excited about the cross-progression (MP and SP) and for cross-play (please be hosted on servers!)!

Not a deal breaker for me if it does or doesn't have zombies. I like the zombies. They are entertaining, but they became way to complex over the last 3 years or so. I shouldn't have to watch video upon video to figure out what to do. Spec ops 100%. Those were great

I'm just waiting for the bomb to drop again. I distinctly remember lots and lots of comments on COD WWII saying, "Yay! We're going back to our roots" and "Look, guys, they listened to us." And, I distinctly remember being disappointed that I bought the game even after not having bought a game since Ghosts. I'm not convinced even a little bit.

@Zee1027: you didn't like WWII? That was my favorite since Black Ops 2. :) Why didn't you like it?

@Tekarukite:

There's a few reasons. 1) when the game came out it was a buggy mess and didn't even get moderately better until after the first couple DLC drops; 2) the game had a huge focus on microtransactions (sure most games do nowadays), but you were hard pressed to not get 3 or 4 of the same thing with a different name in a series of loot box openings - it was really lazy to name one emote 3 different things and have you unlock each individually; 3) the issue with the requisite score requirement for the scorestreaks was only addressed after several months when much of the player based dropped off; and 4) the fact that divisions unnecessarily took choice away from the player (though I'm not upset that they tried something new since they never do).

Please include the survival co-op mode from special ops, that was the greatest co-op mode ever made for the CoD: MW series!!!

I hope you devs are reading this :D Oh and I already pre-ordered the game, here's hoping for survival mode!!!

Hallelujah... Keep zombies out of Modern Warfare. Spec Ops and Survival will do just fine. Cross play and NO season pass?? Infinity Ward looks to be finally taking the crown from Treyarch and I can't wait.

I'm glad cross-play is available but I'm a bit sceptical on how the PC cheaters/hackers will be kept out of ruining games for the majority.They should give people choices on want other platforms they want to cross play with. I hope they have BR mode in this aswel but with better maps and in-game sfx.

So if the single player goes directly in to the coop storyline does that mean:

A) That to see the conclusion of the story I have to play coop

B) That the two are integrated so I get the full experience if I choose to play single or coop.

I would prefer the latter.

I think for a game that is going the realistic route, not having a mode like that is fine; as long as they put the extra effort from that mode into other assets.

For once, this game makes this franchise look good again and I like a game that ties into reality more than a game that doesn't. Battlefield 1 did this brilliantly and I hope more games do this and succeed in the future.

Haha...that's the worse excuse i've heard ..ever...NOW they say it's too far out there..after this many games with zombie modes. They should've said "because we don't want to" instead

This may be the first time I have actually been interested in a COD game in a looooong time.

I just wish one of these companies would either make a new COD or BF set entirely in Vietnam. I’ve been waiting for one of those forever now. I know there have been other games that are in Vietnam but those have been subpar at best

Avatar image for lonewolf1044

@kstaggs87: Oh I would too as it seems like there are not many games with Viet Nam in it.

Avatar image for openmind23

@kstaggs87: I'd like to see another Vietnam war game, but needs to be done perfectly and not to tarnish such a terrible time in our past. No zombies, just the realistic route like this one, would be fine. Make it gory, harrowing and true to what it was like...

On a tangent, Dying Light 2 is the only zombies game i'm looking forward to anyway :)

Avatar image for kstaggs87

@openmind23: Agreed. It also needs a kickass 60's soundtrack too lol. But yeah, a dark gritty Vietnam game would be amazing.

Good. Now they can focus on the parts of the game that actually matter. Zombies was the worst. The whole zombie fad needs to die already.

Not gonna lie, the new Co-Op Mode sounds pretty sweet if it's a narrative continuation from the Story Mode (and no more Zombies). :) Fingers crossed this will be something great (there aren't enough Co-Op games out there).

Finally they learned to use their developers' strengths rather than force the same CoD structure onto each game.

A great SP (thats what this game sounds)

A fun MP

Spec ops (Co op)

A realistic BR mode

Make those things happen and you Will have another big hit.

@johnnyboy787: Doesn't need BR to be a hit.

* New engine.

* New Sound Engine

* Modern events and weapons.

* No crazy SCI-FI bs or zombies or BR

* Cpt.Price

* No Season pass

This all is a music to my ears. Sounds almost too good to be true. Let's see how Activision manage to F__k this all up this time.

Has Modern Warfare ever had zombies mode? They usually have co-op or some sort of horde mode with actual soldiers.

Avatar image for tiller720

Having the BR in Black Ops split Treyarchs focus and just created a multiplayer experience that was not updated or worked on nearly enough. Even WWII felt consistently fresher because the daily/weekly missions were constantly changing and you could earn rewards and guns.

Avatar image for Tekarukite

@tiller720: loved WWII. those challenges kept me playing. It's a pity they didn't do that with Blackout. or Black Ops IIII (MP) for that matter. it's such a head scratcher when you get such a perfect formula (WWII, Fortnite Seasons) that is proven to work - and devs/pubs try to reinvent the wheel instead.

Please lord drop the zombie and Battle Royale modes (which seems to be the case so far).

Just focus on a meaningful singleplayer and a solid multiplayer with not too much bullshit or crazy stuff going on.

Just ground it in reality and make it believable.

@fround: but zombies in a somewhat realistic shooter makes sense? Zombies is boring.
