Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer debuts

Trailer shows global conflict ravaging New York City, European capitals; Sledgehammer Games confirmed as codeveloping; Nov. 8 date now official.

Last week, Activision said it would debut the trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 during the NBA Western Conference Finals game, which airs nationally on ESPN. The tip-off for that game isn't set until 6 p.m. PDT tonight, but Activision decided to reveal the trailer (embedded below) a little bit early.

There goes the neighborhood.
There goes the neighborhood.

Besides officially revealing the game's November 8 release date, the trailer confirmed that Modern Warfare 3 is being codeveloped by Sledgehammer Games, Activision's recently formed San Francisco Bay Area studio. It also cements the fact hinted at by multiple teaser trailers before--that the game will depict the full-blown outbreak of World War III.

Beginning with shots of Russian helicopters assaulting downtown Manhattan, the trailer shows how the devastating Russo-American conflict that broke out in Modern Warfare 2 has now spread to Europe. Urban combat near the Parliament building in downtown London is shown, as is a group of vehicles attacking the city's famed subway system. Paris is also in trouble, with US commandos engaging in street-to-street fighting in the City of Lights. Germany, too, is a battle zone in the game.

The trailer concludes with a voice-over from series antagonist Vladimir Makarov, saying, "It doesn't take the most powerful nations on Earth to create the next global conflict, just the will of a single man." A logo then flashes onscreen for "WW3," which quickly turns into "MW3."

From the history and documents I have read the SAS are more extensively trained the our special forces. Thats not to say anyone is better or worse than the other. But if you look at the training alone... SAS does have U.S. Special Forces beat. *shrug* They're all awesome

@Gamespock You do realize killing Bin Laden was more of a victory for US intelligence, not the SEALs, right? I'm an American and proud of it, but any of the major special forces out there, SEALs, SAS, Spetsnaz, etc, could have completed that mission in a similar manner. It was a hit squad they sent to his front door. Special forces are very good at that type of thing.

Looks like an expansion pack to MW2. Doesn't look good to me. Their lack of will to innovate never ceases to amaze me. Just throw in hours of over-the-top action with no story development whatsoever and call it a day because people are still gonna buy this.

This is looking very promising, I must say. Not as polished as BF3, but good nonetheless. Since BF3 was pushed back to 2012, I most likely get this. I had actually written COD off after the disaster that is MW2 (online anyway). Then I gave it another shot with Black Ops... I really liked the campaign and multiplayer was a step back in the right direction for COD games. I'm officially excited for MW3 now, but I still believe BF3 will be the better of the two.

Make it realistic and have Russia invade the Republic of Georgia instead. @Mikees1: The reason America gets the credit, is because they saved your little island from imminent defeat. Then again America has had the better army since 1775. Oh, and the SAS didn't get bin-Laden

Phil-teh-Pirate. Too true mate. America does not even have the best forces in the world yet every game you play the American "saviour" in somebody elses country/war/whatever. WWII was not just fought by the yanks, in fact they did not even have the highest number of forces deployed in Europe. But every game there they are! So far i'v only really liked modern warfare 1 and that was because you could play as the best special forces in the world-The SAS. Modern warfare 2 lasted about 2 months in my collection.Hope this lasts abit longer.truthfully though im more excited about Battlefield 3 than i am this.Prefer my running and gunning to have a point rather than just running in circles endlessly like in CoD!

Ok, so it looks interesting and all, but I think ALL Call Of Duty fans (and just fans of shooters in general) need to start DEMANDING lengthier games. 4 or 5 hours for a 60 dollar game is ridiculous. Now that Activision has...however many frickin development teams making these COD games (last I heard there were 5) there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for a half length game...60 bucks for a game that lasts the length of 2 movies is ridiculous, and fans need to speak out. Even shooters that are longer but aren't incredibly lengthy (such as Crysis) at least make up for it with the massive scale of the environments and allowing for plenty of exploration...such incredibly guided games that don't allow for much freedom of movement and also are incredibly short shouldn't be charging full price like that. Granted I'm ONLY talking about Single player and most people are probably into the series for the multiplayer. I don't usually ever play multi and focus on the single player experience. I just feel SP should get more focus and care than it typically does...

My biggest wish is that they make the campaign longer. How can you play through WW3 across America and Europe in such a scale in only 5 hours? I know most time is usually spent on multiplayer but the amount of cussing kids playing online turned me away from most matches. Either way, the trailer looks great and with multiple developers working on it, MW3 should be very big. Please dont disappoint.

I will wait for BF3 just because I have had enough CoD for the time being. Hoping main line BF will return it to it's roots as opposed to the direction the Bad Company series has gone. I prefer the larger maps and player count of BF over CoD's more arena/squad based play.

I cannot say iam a COD fan but i can say that this game is a good game, though im not into first person shooter games, i can appreciate COD, COD has almost become a brand name because of their consistency to produce good games, and i doubt any of us can doubt the no.1 selling game in the world

I still don't get the BIG issue some of you people make about which game is better. " MW3 or BF3? ".............. Firstly NONE of us know for sure which game is gonna be better because NONE of us have played any of them yet. We may have played the past series of both games but that does not mean we know how the upcoming version will be. However, we are free to assume and guess. Secondly, most of us who said we're gonna choose one or the other already know that we'll be getting BOTH games anyways because if you're anything like me, I'd prefer to play a game myself and find out first-hand how it is rather than somebody tell me their reviews and experience with it...........

@ShroomyGrl I'm not sure what BF3 trailer you saw, but the one that everyone has seen features plenty of action, but not too much. just the right amount. and huge "boring" maps > small boring corridors

I'm pretty sure most would agree that the single player will be short but will be awesome the entire time. Our problem Activision is this.......the online component needs an upgrade. Add some real physics, game play additions, change the stale animations, stuff like that. Treyarch made a small step in the right direction with a few things. For the first time since CoD 4 I actually liked most of the maps and they felt all different and fresh. We are sick and tired of getting a reskinned multiplayer component all the time!!! Change it up please!

Firstly can i ask wtf is that excuse for a soundtrack? haha. This trailer doesnt show anything to get excited about in my opinion, Everyone knows one of CoDs strong points is setpieces and people also know that isnt enough to make a great game. I really hope the gameplay has been shifted cos i feel the run'n'gun of previous enstallments was getting really bland by the time of Black ops.

I say it's a tie between BF3 and MW3. We know MW3 has the better story, but BF3 has better graphics (on a pc) from what I've seen so far.

to be honest, this one looks promising, i mean the setting of WW3 is interesting enough , i might try this one when it hits the bargain bin because i am sure that the campaign mode won't be more than 8 hours of gameplay tops and i won't play the multiplayer anyway.

@Richardthe3rd I wasn't saying the concept of Russia assaulting the US wasn't ridiculous. As a matter of fact it's as far fetched as every other movie idea by Micheal Bay. On the the nuclear war topic, I do see your point but I honestly don't think there is truly anyway to tell how a country would react on the threat of causing a nuclear holocaust. I'd expect rival governments to have the common sense not to destroy the entire world, but then again the government is run by human beings that can make simple mistakes.

Another 5 hours campaign with a no-way-choice-corridor? Another no environment destruction? Another 20 yards shooting distance to use a .50 sniper rifle? Another "this doesn't sound like real guns" sound quality? Another "stealth" experience with no stealth at all? I really hope not! Or I can wait and buy Battlefield 3. PS: other concerns: Where's the realistic wounds!

@zicolofoo - Exactly, if I even get it. People always say the only reason to get this type of game is mp, but seriously, when mp is just trashed with hackers making it a mess for everyone else, sp campaign is all you have, or move on to another game.
