Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Physical Sales Drop Significantly Compared to Last Year in the US

Infinite Warfare was always expected to sell less than Black Ops III.

Physical sales of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in the US during November were roughly half that of Black Ops III last year, according to new data.

The NPD Group's monthly report was shared with investors yesterday (we'll see a portion of it next week), but Cowen analyst Doug Creutz revealed the figure in a note to investors. "Infinite Warfare units came in 17 percent shy of our expectations, down close to 50 percent [year-over-year]," he said. CNBC confirmed with another source that NPD data shows a 51 percent decline for physical Call of Duty sales in November 2016 when compared with November 2015. Physical sales in the UK were also down, at least at launch.

There are two important caveats to point out immediately. As noted above, this is true only of physical sales; digital sales were projected to be up, which will help to offset this decline to some degree. Additionally, Activision offered what's arguably Call of Duty's best-ever special edition incentive with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. This enhanced version of fan-favorite Call of Duty 4 is not sold on its own, only coming with special editions of Infinite Warfare. The cheapest of those costs $80, and that higher price tag will also help Activision to deal with the physical sales decline.

Infinite Warfare was expected to sell less than Black Ops III simply due to the fact that it's a new sub-series; Black Ops is a more established name that players tend to gravitate toward. Activision Blizzard acknowledged this before release, but it seems unlikely it was an anticipating such a precipitous drop--certainly investors and analysts were not. The company's stock price has declined about nine percent over the last month, currently standing at $36.60. That's roughly $9 less than where it was in mid-October.

Earlier this week, analyst firm Robert W. Baird advised that sales for Infinite Warfare had been "soft" but suggested microtransaction sales could help moving forward. None of the game's four DLC packs have yet been released.

Developer Infinity Ward's plans for an in-game holiday event were revealed earlier this week. Meanwhile, Modern Warfare Remastered is getting six free maps soon.

While I am glad to hear of physical copies declining (Hoping for a digital only future) .. I'm not entirely sure the digital sales will reach their expectations .. we shall see !!

No surprise really. Can't keep shoving the same tired-futuristic-Titanfall knock offs to gamers every year.

Offer more incentives for single player to purchase additional missions, weapons. Single player is like the bastard step child that no one wants. SP is the version that put gaming on the map.

@Slick508: Almost wish they would sell them seperately. MP only or SP only versions for $30.

@GRADERBLADE13: BO3 was the "best" version of the last 3 wall-boosting CODs.

Movement was smoother and easier to pick up and play.

New COD games suck, they need to cut out all the leaping through the air, jumping through hoops. smoking your own pole and get back to the basics.. Running and gunning on people,, awesome maps and not who can run and jump off the most out of the way point to get the biggest kill streak..

Also fixing the dang connections to be on dedicated servers, this P2P crap is garbage and lag compensation is the worst.. Why should dbag mc screwed up Connection get an advantage over other players.. If anything having better internet should give you the advantage..

@OrgeLambart: I am kinda with you on this one.

I did like the campaign in this one. But the MP... I just can't get into all these jet-pack boost in every shooter now. The remaster of MW1 is a joke, its optimized by Ray Charles obviously.

I want to get back to the way that MW1 was before, with a few expanded kill streaks like MW2 had, but obviously some different ones. Dedi-servers. Mod Support. I personally loved MW1 had a great many of map to play on with custom maps. MW2-3 and everything since had the same dozen or so maps. That got stale.

I never really cared for the blokes at Treyarch as their games never really seemed optimized either, and for a MP shooter that is a freaking must with me.

id personally like to see a global Boycott of CoD... Next years release, activision is all hype, getting ready to sell millions of copies, but every gamer opens their eyes and finally sees the truth that CoD is just annual garbage that doesn't deserve the shit out of a rats ass, let alone our hard earned $ and not a single copy is purchased... Alas i can dream.

I bet they do a WWII game next. Somebody needs to. WWII had the best weapons and theatre .. so many different types of maps can be made from WWII.

@Gravity_Slave: How about a hypothetical war against Russia during the 80's? Basically Red Dawn. It has to be a war-like conflict of some kind. It can't be paintball.. though I do remember 007 paintball battles on N64 being pretty fun.

@notsure50100: While I agree there needs to be a WWII shooter again. I kinda miss it.

There are better weapons, and theaters in other times/wars. Not to mention you could fabricate some even better.

@notsure50100: actually WW2 is kind of weak in terms of weapons and attachments,, although this modern flying through the air with Jetpacks crap is lame.. Maybe warfare from like the Gulf war or something.. so you'll have a good mix of weapons etc etc etc..

@OrgeLambart: same here, WW2 games are fun, weapon are too slow, and the reload time is crap. I was never into Battlefield because it was slow as crap. COD is fast and easy to pick up. Maybe they should do 3 type of Call of Duty games. Infinity Ward with the current wars, Treyarch on past wars WWII and Sledgehammer Games Future

@OrgeLambart: I wouldn't mind a return to current day also and yea the attachments weren't a thing in WWII. I'm old enough to remember the Medal of Honor and early CoD WWII games .. and some of the best single player and online experiences I've ever had. They we're super intense and more tactical since you weren't a super soldier. I feel like once the gadgetry became dominant in the games it all became about collecting shit and obsess about getting that extra level to get the gun cammo or whatever. When I was playing the WWII games it was more about the map and strategy. It's too soon to go back to modern day. They need to do WWII first and then come back to present day .. by time PS5 comes.

@GRADERBLADE13: Yea if it was done right .. but Vietnam is a bit of a sore spot since .. um, the US lost that war. Killing the Vietcong these days isn't as easy a sell as killing Nazis. Still, I wouldn't mind playing the urban battles shown in Full Metal Jacket.

Say what you want, it's not a horrible game. IW is actually somewhat enjoyable but it's not an addictive blowout that their games used to be. That being said:

People are sick of being "nickle-and-dimed" by activision. I'm not talking about the base game and/or the special edition. After all it is "arguably Call of Duty's best-ever special edition incentive" as the article says. I'm talking about their money-grabbing day-to-day stuff on all of their games. Cutting content (destiny) and making more than cosmetic offers on random packages that can be bought for real money (BO3 and now IW to some extent). What ever happened to the CoD games that would GIVE us new guns when we bought DLC packs and not make us roll the dice and hope to get them? People put up with this when the game is still good but they remember it and won't support it next time unless the next installment is just as good. But give us great value for our money at the expense of NOT squeezing a few extra bucks out of us now, and we will be loyal life-long fans.

I've been a CoD fan since, literally, the beginning. It is the franchise that pulled me away from Medal of Honor back in the PS2 days. I've been patient, but if this keeps up...I WILL be on my way out. You may have to search a little now days...but there are game producers out there that are not afraid to give us real value for the money spent on their games.

Even though its very similar to black ops 3 I just didn't like it as much and I got rid of it and went and got black ops 3 again, I do enjoy playing cod (something simple you can play online splitscreen with your other half on). I dont see myself getting the next cod or any multiplayer fps shooters for a while.

While I'm sure that digital sales are climbing the biggest reason for this difference in sales is most likely due in large part to the increased special edition sales which aren't included in the numbers.
