Call of Duty in space? "I wouldn’t count it out," says executive producer

"Challenges are good," says executive producer Mark Rubin.

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin has said the studio is happy to consider any possibility when starting the development of a new game--including space.

When asked about setting a Call of Duty game in space by UK newspaper Metro, Rubin said "yeah. It makes sense. I wouldn't count it out. Everything's on the table. When we start a new game every possibility's on the table. If we think that it'd be cool to have a battle over Jupiter, sure. Why not?"

Earlier in the interview, Rubin was discussing the new multiplayer modes in Call of Duty: Ghosts, saying that the multiplayer designers "loved the idea of environments" that featured full 3D movement. An opening section in the single-player campaign of Ghosts is set in space, and the game also features underwater scenes.

"But the grenades wouldn't work exactly right," continued Rubin. "Kill Streaks wouldn't work at all--can't have a helicopter in outer space. Or a dog for that matter." The idea of converting the existing Call of Duty mutliplayer to somewhere like space "does become a bit of a challenge," he said.

"Challenges are good," he added. "There might be ways around it. Maybe it's not just floating around in space, maybe it's [...] inside the space station."

Rubin said the idea of a space map could potentially become DLC, if it was worth the effort for the studio. "We could do it, but I don't know… will it be fun? And this is the party pooper version of the answer: you have to measure effort versus payout. Would it be worth that amount of work? Which involves rewriting all the scripts for all the Kill Streaks, potentially creating new art assets for all the Kill Streaks--which would take months--to make one level that's in space."

Infinity Ward discussed the game's 720p native resolution on the Xbox One version of the game with GameSpot earlier this week.

Call of Duty: Ghosts was launched for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U on Tuesday. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will follow at launch.

Your telling me we'll actually have to put some effort into doing something new!?!? Get the **** out of my office!!! Your ludicrous ideas have upset me greatly!

What i find hilarious about this sort of games (CoD and co) is when they talk about changing the setting and then go on about how great MP is and how it is the main focus.

If MP is all that matters......WHO CARES WHERE THE NEXT IS SET?

Just throw a couple of maps and be done with it, because it doesn't matter where it is setting, in the end, it's the same "crap".

Avatar image for Grenadeh

Grenades don't work exactly right in any CoD game already.

Avatar image for crocodileman94

Why not Call of Duty on motorcycles while you're at it.

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@crocodileman94 Sons of Duty?

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@crocodileman94 No likes for my sons of anarchy/call of duty? A pox on you.

Avatar image for digitaldame

Umm... wasn't Call of Duty in space all ready a thing? Anyone else remember Rezurrection?

Avatar image for FromHeroes2Dust

Good. Modern Warfare after Modern Warfare after WWII after WWII is fucking redundant. If CoD is going to keep going and going, it needs to change.

If by 'in space' you mean in the actual Big Black (see: the USMC assault in _Moonraker_), IW and Treyarch could learn much from a little game called Shattered Horizon which was built solely for that (you can find it on Steam, and folks have put up plenty of footage on YouTube) . And yes, Mr Rubin, it does have grenades... and, by the way, the setting makes one-hit-kill melee attacks completely justified. Also, it respects the fact of sound not really traveling in space, as DigiTMPS3 points out - it's explained in the lore that what you're hearing is actually generated by your suit systems as an audio reference, something I believe the new BSG does as well.

"Kill Streaks wouldn't work at all"? Of course they would - the helicopters would be swapped out for appropriately-sized UAVs.

**** these articles are retarded! 5 minutes later some other shmoe will be "quoted" as saying it would be unlikely. I'm done with these stupid ass speculative articles GS.

Best moment so far watching all these Anti-CoD rants...see a guy go on-and-on about how CoD "copies and pastes" everything..meanwhile, he's bought and played every Madden since 1998. Now there's copy and paste. lol

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@Gravity_Slave Like people have explained, they can't change football. The NFL changes football. Madden is legit copy and paste but its still profiteering horse shit all the same. CoD is worse.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

If Infinity Ward wanted to do something in space, they should have done Aliens:Colonial Marines instead of Gearbox ruining it.

He wouldn't count anything out..Call of duty on the sun! Call of duty toilet warfare! Call of duty Pillow Fight! Call of duty Dog's Revenge!

Avatar image for brxricano

@ramcool789 Whatever feeds their weak ass imagination!

Avatar image for themc_7

Yeah sure why not. Just continue pumping out the most stupid games the world has ever known! Space? **** space, the next call of duty takes place on Mars, or maybe even the Sun!

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

It really is so sad that peoples hate and bias has gone this far. You'll say CoD gives people cancer before you admit its probably a good game that other people besides yourself like.

Avatar image for themc_7

@Gravity_Slave @themc_7 Don't get me wrong, I used to play COD and I loved it. I've grown out of it and it's not for me anymore. They just keep pumping out games year after year. I invite them to have multiplayer in zero g space. Just do something new instead of the same shit every year

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@themc_7 @Gravity_Slave You, sir, why are you defending what does not deserve defending. Are you that morally superior or are you a lawer?

I have played every call of duty except World at War and Ghostsand I can say for a fact they are all the same game (Modern Warfare 1). CoD 1 and 2 were actual good games, 3 not so much.

It makes no difference though, it's all copy paste.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

Don't get you wrong? lol when someone starts out with "continue pumping out the most stupid games theworld has ever known!. That isn't hard to get wrong.

But see, instead of that ball of hate you first let out, why didn't you just say this second comment instead? Anyone can trash something and walk away, just look at this message board. Most admitting they haven't even picked up a CoD game in years. If its soo repetitive, how could you know? You haven't been playing them! lol Bunch of sheep

Avatar image for atlanticmoon

COD accidentally gets sent 150 years into the past to fight for the North during the Civil War.

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@atlanticmoon Alternate History CoD! Lol. The North loses because there were too many explosions and set pieces - and dogs, they squandered their superior manufacturing power.

I just want to know if the interviewers worldwide got an anonymous email saying "every time you're covering something related to a video game, ask them if they're planning on doing one in space" or something.

Why, all of a sudden, is there always somebody asking if there's going to be one in space? What's with the obsession?

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@Korvus85 Space is a mostly unexplored area for gaming. Sure you have System Shock 2 and Alpha Centuari and Escape Velocity, and a lot of other stuff - but especially with RTS games, they are a sterile, totally different environment than a 3d game in space where you are in the middle of the action.

I mean obviously there's Shattered Horizon, Dead Space, and a lot of others, but it's still a mostly unused setting.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b797108c254e

@Grenadeh True, and apparently everybody realised that at once these past few months =P

Avatar image for plaintomato

@Korvus85 Uh, because the campaign level in space impressed. I would buy space maps DLC, and I don't even buy COD DLC. I wouldn't buy COD at all though if it went too sci-fi - everything else already occupies the sci-fi spot.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b797108c254e

@plaintomato My point was, all of a sudden people are asking all sorts of franchises if they will be making an iteration is space, not just COD and I'm wondering what triggered all of it.

Avatar image for Hurvl

If it's set on Mars they could call it CoD: Ghosts of Mars. It'll probably be as good as the movie called Ghosts of Mars :P.

Avatar image for TheDarkSpot

Weren't we in space in some of the CODs already?

Avatar image for galactic88

@TheDarkSpot Yea I thought it was a DLC wasn't it haha.

Avatar image for sgt_hunter

@galactic88 @TheDarkSpot next will be a game in space and earth fighting will be the DLC

Avatar image for Saidrex

"can't have a helicopter in outer space."

This is COD, helicopters can fly anywhere! This is funny how they worry about realism in game that has none.

Avatar image for Saidrex

Dog in space suit?

Avatar image for StokeMeAClipper

@Saidrex At first I hated the idea of COD in space, but now I think I'm coming around to the idea lol (not really I just liked your comment).

Avatar image for Gamer3344

What about CoD in Mars?

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

Ya blabbed Quaid! You blabbed about Mars!"

Avatar image for TheDarkSpot

@Gamer3344 Red Faction?

Avatar image for DigiTMPS3

Seen the space gameplay in Ghosts. Mr Rubin, please explain what makes you think there is audible sound in space. You can hear sounds in a spacecraft only due to being air particles inside which is fine. However outside in space sound is silent. I cannot believe the COD team missed such a massive fact. Before making another game, go back to school.

Avatar image for StHapns247

@DigiTMPS3 Star Wars would have been so cool without any sound during the space battles. Go back to school George Lucas!

Avatar image for deactivated-5b797108c254e

@DigiTMPS3 Not defending COD or anything about Activision but most media make a decision of adding sound to space battles and whatnot for the simple fact that any sort of extended scene with absolutely no sound becomes boring beyond belief...

Avatar image for Grenadeh

@Korvus85 @DigiTMPS3 At least muffled sound would be good. Unfortunately straight up space makes that unrealistic, without oxygen around. Which is why at least the parts in space where you could hear in Dead Space were because of sections where the hull was breached and oxygen was leaking.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b797108c254e

@Grenadeh You make a good point, it did feel a lot more immersive in Dead Space than other games/movies...I really wouldn't want to watch a movie set in space with nothing but silence when the "camera" was outside a spaceship for half an hour at a time but muffled sounds (sort of like they do with underwater scenes) would definitely be an improvement.

Avatar image for arqe

@DigiTMPS3 Its not that sound is silent , sound doesnt travel in space.

Avatar image for AluminumAndroid

"Would it be worth that amount of work? Which involves rewriting all the scripts"

Or you can copy paste just like every other COD game!

I love how lazily he aproaches it "but then we'd have to re-work killstreaks, can't have helicopters or dogs... maybe in a space station!"

As Ghosts proved, IW never really willing to try anything new or creative. Give this next one to Treyarch and I'm sure they'll make something cool out of it though, as they're the ones who actually TRY to mix things up (and aren't so super serious about the atmosphere all the time - e.g. The characters in Zombies, one handing stinger launchers while riding horses charging tanks etc.)

"Wha-? We... we need to... make NEW assets? D: Can't we at least reuse some animations like last time???"
