Call Of Duty Dev Increases Efforts To Eliminate Racist Content In Modern Warfare And Warzone

Infinity Ward announced that they would be increasing efforts to ban and remove racist and hateful content from the game.

Infinity Ward is increasing their efforts to ban racist names from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, the developer announced in a recent tweet. The post says that they already ban users with racist or hate-orientated names from the game but additional counter-measures are being put in place to make sure names don't slip through the cracks.

"There is no place for racist content in our game. This is an effort we began with launch and we need to do a better job. We're issuing thousands of daily bans of racist and hate-orientated names. But we know we have to do more - and we are," Infinity Ward said in the statement.

The tweet goes on to say that they will be adding additional resources to monitor and ID racist content and additional in-game reporting systems to increase the number of bans per hour. They will also be adding filters and greater restrictions on name changes in addition to increasing permanent bans to root out repeat offenders.

In recent days members of the Call of Duty community have been outspoken about the issues of racism and hate-orientated names and content in the games.

These announced changes come after Activision announced that Season 4 of Modern Warfare and Warzone would be delayed in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed. Activision is one of several companies that have released a public statement about the Black Lives Matter movement.

It's easy to tweet and give the illusion of caring, it's another to actually do something. If you go to the Activision community boards, you'll see endless complaints that nobody ever answers....including racism. To think that game dev's care about anything is insane.

Kind of heavy handed to be able to determine what is a racist name and what isn't.

@EricDWright: Their policies are written to allow them to reserve judgment on what they deem appropriate, same with chat messages and any other way to use their game online. It's the same as usernames on forums or anything else online with an agreement.

@girlusocrazy: Nobody questions whether it is allowed or not. Surely privately owned property and companies can do what they want with their product or service. By contrast I can also reserve my judgement on what to do with their actions, whether it be purchase their product or not. I chose the latter.

Good thing they didn't deny baking a cake to someone......

@EricDWright: ? That's the same with every company. Every company has ways of reporting users and block offensive names and has policies for doing this.

You're not buying their product because you disagree with one of the names this specific company blocked?

@girlusocrazy: Ok...I'm typing slowly now. I disagree with a company to decide what is inappropriate. The overarching subject we are talking about is censorship. If I was Activision and tomorrow I decided that any word or any subject is "inappropriate" I am now influencing what people can think. I would invite you to read 1984 and you will better understand what I'm trying to convey to you if my point is incomprehensible.

@EricDWright: Why do you disagree with them in particular compared to any other company that is doing this? Are you boycotting every game company with an online component that involves a license permitting them to reserve judgment on penalizing users over offensive content?

GameSpot does this too, will you boycott them? You could try posting the same team names used in CoD wherever you want on GameSpot but they would exercise their policies on that as well.

I guess you could try posting those names on any service you like, and if you get banned, boycott them. Doing this you could make a list of sites for those who agree with you to avoid. If you want, you can put it in a google doc and everyone who is interested could add to it and boycott the same sites.

@girlusocrazy: Not that I think you care why I object to censorship but I've answered your questions to "why" in my previous posts. As far as CoD is concerned I haven't bought it and I will not be buying it. Yes you are correct, GameSpot can censor, ban and control what content is seen, however I am not incurring and cost (its free) to post here and view content whereas Activision, COD, is a consumer paid product. I have NOT purchased other games from other publishers and developers for similar reasons.

I will say again if you still don't understand, this is about censorship and not about "offensive content".

Hopefully you get my point by now....

@EricDWright: If you like Censorship you shouldn't go online or play games that make us agree to their terms. ALL terms in games and websites are very much censorship. We agree or we leave.

If you look at censorship in a 'free speech' sense, you must understand we cannot harm , harass, slander or disrupt with our speech. So in a way, even free speech is censored. I'm amazed anyone would even cry censorship when it comes to racism.

@vindowsxp: Who's talking about racism? I'm not. I certainly know better to discuss racism with anyone. Its taboo.

I have stated in my post I reject censorship but I'm also pragmatic enough to know I can't escape it all....so I affect where I can as much as I can.

@EricDWright: So you will boycott all paid online game developers since they do the same as Activision on their services?

@girlusocrazy: Yep. Anything else? Feels like your just perpetuating this subject. I've been very clear but perhaps your just trying to setup a gotcha moment.

@EricDWright: No more EA, Riot, Blizzard, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Blizzard, Activision, Nintendo, Sony, GOG, Valve (I guess no Steam), PAX, or Twitch I guess

Not very many games or systems you can play...

But there is other entertainment out there you would probably like while you're bored from not playing any games, such as the Sacred Symbols podcast

Oh...your still here..... #eyeroll..... In case reading comprehension is a problem (and yes I hear your veiled sarcasm) ....

@EricDWright: Hmm you're still here so um yeah? I'm happy to be here personally, I guess GameSpot hasn't gotten bad enough to put me off yet!

Yes, comprehension, just trying to help/understand is all. I am beginning to understand that it must feel tough for you when you feel like everything around you conflicts with your values.

I've never listened to Sacred Symbols though I have heard a lot from Colin on IGN podcasts, and I've heard similar comments as yours from the hosts in the news and on twitter so I thought it and other Colin's Last Stand podcasts would help you find games and media that fit your preferences. A lot of people who left Giant Bomb and GameSpot recently have recommended them as well.

@girlusocrazy: I see well I appreciate the attention. I'm not having any problems finding entertain as my tastes are vast and varied. The only value I'm discussing here is the censorship one....

In particular the original thread is about CoD in which I never liked that much anyways, I am more Battlefield field guy.

If you want to see what games I am playing lately you can check out my library on PSN.
