Call of Duty: Cold Warfare next up for Treyarch?

Studio reportedly seeking "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music," pointing to guerrilla warfare hot spots of '60s and '70s.

Source: The video game blog called That Videogame Blog.

What we heard: As Call of Duty: World at War was being finalized last fall, its developer indicated that it could be the final Call of Duty game set during World War II. After saying that the now-best-seller's setting had already been decided when Treyarch came on board, senior producer Noah Heller dropped a major hint that it would be the last entry in the series based on the 1939-1945 conflict.

No Caption Provided

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theater, and that lets us put a close to the war," he told OXM UK magazine last year. "I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come, and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

This week, a That Videogame Blog article sparked a rumor firestorm that Treyarch may move the series to another Pacific Rim locale: Vietnam. Citing a "reliable" source, the blog reported that, "Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,' music that gives some serious hints as to the locations the game may take us. Mentioned were Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. The source says Call of Duty: World at War's senior producer Noah Heller is involved, so it looks like Treyarch is once again developing."

The official story: Activision reps covering the Call of Duty franchises politely declined to comment.

No Caption Provided

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given that apparently That Videogame Blog's source was pressured to recant. Several hours after the original story went live (cached version linked above), it was hurriedly replaced by an apologetic note.

"Whoops, looks like talking about this is too soon for some people and our source has requested of us to remove the story," reads the new post.

Although an intriguing concept, Vietnam-era shooters have proven problematic in the past, with Battlefield: Vietnam, Men of Valor, Vietcong, Conflict: Vietnam, and 2004's Shellshock: 'Nam '67 selling poorly. (The latter two games were also fragged by critics.) Given the multiple locales, another possibility could be a game set in the hotspots of the decades-long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Call of Duty: Cold Warfare, anyone?

i actually like this idea. vietnam was a crazy war. it makes a lot of sense with them doing this. think of it like this...nam was the ultimate gorilla warfare war...but half the missions in COD:WAW were in the pacific against the japanese where gorilla tactics were used...remember, the mission where they pretended to be dead, or all those times you had to use a flamethrower to get them out of grass, or find that annoying sniper in the trees? if that was a practice run for the type of battles in a vietnam COD, then itll be awesome! Plus, its uncharted territory. The past nam games all sucked and ive only heard of Conflict: Vietnam. I've never even heard of the other ones they mentioned. This could be very cool...(although lets be honest im infinitely more excited for MW2. treyarch just isn't as good as infinity ward..)

You know i'm really tired of being a very very good american guy killing other bad guys specially when the war was not really between bad and good ( Or if it was americans were the bad guys! ) and what's really funny about it! is making it epic!. No offence!

Talk about milking a franchise. We haven't even got Modern Warfare 2 out yet, I want some time to play that first before I even start thinking about the next one.

I'm glad they're stopping with WWII. I played a bit of CoD: WaW and it's a fantastic game, but WWII has been done to death. Vietnam is an interesting war because it was a first for lots of technologies. What would be really interesting would be a game that fictionally combines a lot of the wars and their technologies.

@topeira. Innovation would not involve saying "my two cents" in a comment because that saying is by far overused in forums. There is only so much innovation a fps can have this generation but I do agree that a replacement of set pieces with more dynamic events would be cool. For example, enemies don't spawn in the exact same positions and their strategy is a function of how well the player is doing and can change accordingly. What can be annoying with Call of Duty games is, events don't continue unless you hit a certain location or complete a certain objective and allied soldiers are infinite but don't do much. If the levels were more open and less linear, the game setting would feel like a real battlefield.

@INFAMOUSHAVOC - Did you evern actually read the article? Apparently not since the whole article clearly indicates the game will not be set in WW2. Even the title of the article indicates a Vietnam game, or possible fictitious Cold War game. Don't post comments if your not even going to read the title of the damn article.

i am SOOOO ready for a COD game that isnt the linear scripted corridor shooter we've seen for almost 10 years now. besides the settings, COD, halo, medal of honor (not airborne), FEAR, HL2 and even wolfenstein has waaaay too much in common. it's time to move ahead. progress. give some innovation. my 2 cents

And it's about damn time. an 80's cold war game would be a change of pace. the problem with vietnam is, and has always been in the presentation of the subject matter. the idea of us solders killing children strapped with explosives amongst other acts that took place is possibly a bigger sore spot than the konami six days issue.

Yeah, don't tell me Americans are shallow gamers when the Wii moves mindless shovelware worldwide. Clearly we are all mostly fools and suckers... present company excluded of course! ;) I'm kidding.. .kidding... present company (myself included) are not excepted. We're apes on two feet, of COURSE we love Pong and Doom. lol. Still, you don't see NRA Gun Club, or Deer Hunter 2121 (or whatever) selling in Europe or Asia. My god.. there was a HALO SODA. Dogar may not be right to stereotype, but there IS a stereotype out there with some basis in reality. It's just a bit more borderles :)

I saw most of CNN's Cold War program and thought there were a lot of conflicts that, if added all up, could make a pretty cool game. The problem is that many of them only had limited US involvement. It appears that many Americans, particularly white conservative Americans, have a difficult time identifying with non-American protagonists. The Cold War was mostly about proxy wars, with the US and USSR pulling some strings behind the curtains, not direct involvement. So how do you make a game about the Cold War and have it appeal to the shallow tastes of the American gamer base? One solution is to have the player constantly play CIA operatives and/or elite troopers that have been sent in to help out in these proxy wars. For example, you could play as an operative of Oliver North's, sent in to help the Nicaraguan contras against the Sandanistas. Or you could capture and assassinate Chile's Salvador Allende, and help setup Pinochet. Perhaps assist the Indonesian Muslim extremists in their mass extermination of Communist Party members. I've always wanted to see a game portray the Angolan civil war between UNITA and the MPLA. China and the US supported UNITA against the USSR-backed MPLA, so it would be interesting to see that portrayed in a game.

Why is it called Call of Duty 7 though? Modern Warfare 2 officially doesn't have the CoD Logo. And considering the fact that CoD:WaW isn't officially called Call of Duty 5, Cold Warfare should be labeled Call of Duty 5: Cold Warfare.

Now that Infinityward have basically got a seperate franchise now, the Modern Warfare series, then Treyarch are solely responsible for COD, but I can't see it selling. Games like InFamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 and all refreshing changes to gameplay and are all looking to be great, and the COD series is the same as any other shooter. Sure, it's above average, but that was with the COD4 engine, and I'm not sure if Treyarch are using it this time round?

Was Vietnam a good war or bad war? Who cares, it was still a major war in U.S. history and a game about it would be sweet, especially a CoD game. Plus think of the sweet weapons the last version of the thomspon, the first m-16, the first colt commando (car-15), M60, M63 stoner, Chinese ak-47, it would make for some cool attachments and the game would be bloody as hell, and they could add special ops missions like nighttime jungle missons.

COD:WAW sucked, only because of one reason...everyone always used the MP40, and the maps were dull and bland. You cant compare COD:WAW and COD4. I must like the weapons of COD4 better, but like I said, it gets quite annoying getting killed by the mp40 every other death.
