Call of Duty: Cold Warfare next up for Treyarch?

Studio reportedly seeking "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music," pointing to guerrilla warfare hot spots of '60s and '70s.

Source: The video game blog called That Videogame Blog.

What we heard: As Call of Duty: World at War was being finalized last fall, its developer indicated that it could be the final Call of Duty game set during World War II. After saying that the now-best-seller's setting had already been decided when Treyarch came on board, senior producer Noah Heller dropped a major hint that it would be the last entry in the series based on the 1939-1945 conflict.

No Caption Provided

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theater, and that lets us put a close to the war," he told OXM UK magazine last year. "I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come, and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

This week, a That Videogame Blog article sparked a rumor firestorm that Treyarch may move the series to another Pacific Rim locale: Vietnam. Citing a "reliable" source, the blog reported that, "Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,' music that gives some serious hints as to the locations the game may take us. Mentioned were Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. The source says Call of Duty: World at War's senior producer Noah Heller is involved, so it looks like Treyarch is once again developing."

The official story: Activision reps covering the Call of Duty franchises politely declined to comment.

No Caption Provided

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given that apparently That Videogame Blog's source was pressured to recant. Several hours after the original story went live (cached version linked above), it was hurriedly replaced by an apologetic note.

"Whoops, looks like talking about this is too soon for some people and our source has requested of us to remove the story," reads the new post.

Although an intriguing concept, Vietnam-era shooters have proven problematic in the past, with Battlefield: Vietnam, Men of Valor, Vietcong, Conflict: Vietnam, and 2004's Shellshock: 'Nam '67 selling poorly. (The latter two games were also fragged by critics.) Given the multiple locales, another possibility could be a game set in the hotspots of the decades-long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Call of Duty: Cold Warfare, anyone?

mrbo69jangles, just don't go there, how can you not like CoD games, they are "the best FPS's that have ever grassed the eyes and hands of the gaming population" that was actually said by a game critic called Andy Thompson one of my best mates and one of the harshest critics i know, well the harshest i know, but hes harsher than other reviews i've red from critics, that are to be said rather harsh. So mrbo69jangles stop being an (no swearing on game spot, several times) and don't say stupid thinks like no CoD games again.

Infinity Ward should make a iraq/afgan war, or maby treyarch, just as long as its good ill buy it. Well after saying that, i heard that MW 2 is going to involve the american army rangers, and you also get to use tanks and i think its as the british royal marines commandos tank squad, i didnt even know they had one, so i think tanks are out, but the american army rangers is a good idea, snipey snipey, in other words.

Sounds good, but there's a huge chance Treyarch will blow this one. Fingers Crossed.

WWII games are way over done but there are still battles that i havent seen in a game such as North Africa or the fighting in China or the fighting in the western Philippines. A game that followed a battalion would be cool such as Band of Brothers (book and tv show). I know this is supposed to about vietnam. Vietnam is a conflict that did not go well for America in any way. A game based off of Vietnam would be really cool if it was an open world game where you had a squad with the mission to search and destroy enemy positions and such. A Cold War based game would be very interesting too

i think that future warfare will be awful, ww1 would be awful, and anything involving soviet russia will be the best cod in my book. id take cold warfare by treyarch over modern warfare 2 by infinity ward any day. cod 5, gameplay wise, was just as good as cod4 but it got old. treyarch has it nailed. i want cold warfare.

The US and USSR "fought" the cold war by espionage and supporting each others enemy's.

Vietnam could be fun (as long as Infinity Ward is behind it...). But still.. there is something about WWII that keeps attracting me to it.

Vietnam would make a good game but how would you win? Would you leave Vietnam, go back to the USA and constantly say the war was a draw?

ugh tryarch...... boring only guna buy infinity ward games now coz CoD:WaW sucked it was the same as CoD:MW. im looking at MW2 at the moment not somethin which may or maynot happen. y dont they do the war whixh has literally just ended... the iraq war or maybe a civil war which doesnt have frikein americans as the lead characters. honestly its lik they were in every war and tthey were the best fighters who always ended it. maybe try for originality maybe a different nationality main character eg a french or italian one or even an arab. you know mix it up a bit

i'm curious....i don't think it's possible to do a cold war game, if only for the simple reason that america and russia never actually fought each other directly. it was more about a nuclear arms race and espionage..therefore making COD a spy game. Vietnam would be interesting, but im sure there are more interesting wars......WW1 any one? trench warfare ftw haha

Maybe game developers should start to create games based on fictional wars, perhaps the war of the future like in Terminator. Now if someone told me that IW was making a Terminator future warfare game, I'd be on it like blue bonnet. I'd be the first one at the door waiting to buy my copy. I got it what about an IW / Lucas Arts First person Star Wars shooter, now that would sell millions.

All of the Call of Duty Games have been great. Although everyone was anticipating MW2 for a long time, if you dont admit that World At War was a great game then you're just another baby that didnt get his bottle. Personally i thought treyarch did a good job with COD5 and im sure they'll do even better with the COD6, just give it a chance people, its going to be the last WWII game, they wanna go out with a bang.

I agree with Hassy84. Nam eh? Should be interesting. Instead of martyrdom, they should have "Agent Orange" that sprays all over the players killer. Then the killcam can fastforward about a year and see the killer weeping at the birth of his mutated offspring.

"Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,'" Why is it Call of Duty 7? Modern Warfare 2 is confirmed to be in it's own series now, and not part of the Call of Duty series, therefore, wouldn't this be Call of Duty 6?

i dont know why infinity ward teamed up with treyarch. i think it was a stupid mistake for that as they are gonna lose call of duty fans because treyarch decided to stay on the WW2 path and most people are done with it. IW should be the only developers. just look at call of duty 1 (and expansion) call of duty 2, and call of duty 4. they were the best shooters in the world. and call of duty 3 (from what ive heard) sucked. and cod 5 just gets boring. unlike cod 4 where i still play it even tho im the highest rank.

Po0p man, call of duty in vietnam? Reasons why this will fail: 1. It's call of duty, thus it will be made to please the mainstream with the same old crud that we have seen in the past 2 call of dutys. 2. It's treyarch, im sorry but infinity ward own their faces off, hands down. 3. VIETNAM HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE BRILLIANTLY, with games like Sheelshock: 'Nam 67 and Men Of Valour that were mentioned, those 2 games are really amazing and i highly reccomend them, it doesnt matter that they didnt sell well, they still RULED, they are bit dated but still awesome. Because Vietnam has already been done, this game will be as unoriginal as a chick flick. It will be a nice change to WW2 i give them that, but it's treyarch isnt it?

Bajda_mdawwrA, COD5 used the same engine as 4 did, the only f*****n difference was the guns and the vibrations durring specific times like being shot or gernades, COD5 was a great game, manly why so many people still play it.
