Call of Duty: Cold Warfare next up for Treyarch?

Studio reportedly seeking "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music," pointing to guerrilla warfare hot spots of '60s and '70s.

Source: The video game blog called That Videogame Blog.

What we heard: As Call of Duty: World at War was being finalized last fall, its developer indicated that it could be the final Call of Duty game set during World War II. After saying that the now-best-seller's setting had already been decided when Treyarch came on board, senior producer Noah Heller dropped a major hint that it would be the last entry in the series based on the 1939-1945 conflict.

No Caption Provided

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theater, and that lets us put a close to the war," he told OXM UK magazine last year. "I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come, and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

This week, a That Videogame Blog article sparked a rumor firestorm that Treyarch may move the series to another Pacific Rim locale: Vietnam. Citing a "reliable" source, the blog reported that, "Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,' music that gives some serious hints as to the locations the game may take us. Mentioned were Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. The source says Call of Duty: World at War's senior producer Noah Heller is involved, so it looks like Treyarch is once again developing."

The official story: Activision reps covering the Call of Duty franchises politely declined to comment.

No Caption Provided

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given that apparently That Videogame Blog's source was pressured to recant. Several hours after the original story went live (cached version linked above), it was hurriedly replaced by an apologetic note.

"Whoops, looks like talking about this is too soon for some people and our source has requested of us to remove the story," reads the new post.

Although an intriguing concept, Vietnam-era shooters have proven problematic in the past, with Battlefield: Vietnam, Men of Valor, Vietcong, Conflict: Vietnam, and 2004's Shellshock: 'Nam '67 selling poorly. (The latter two games were also fragged by critics.) Given the multiple locales, another possibility could be a game set in the hotspots of the decades-long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Call of Duty: Cold Warfare, anyone?

@athenian29 No offense to your uncle, but he wasted his time, and his friends did die needlessly. Vietnam will forever be remembered as one of the biggest military **** ups imaginable. Also, it has nothing to do with the era, and what the war was about, most other developers just had too small of a budget to correctly make a Vietnam game. Men of Valor did it right, and Call of Duty definitely could. Especially Treyarch, since they made the gorier WaW, not to mention fire and jungle effects.

Battlefield Vietnam was actually pretty good. Quite the step up from 1942, and now both of those are available together for $10 on amazon - fully patched, with both of 1942's expansions and the Redux version of Vietnam. Class-based multiplayer at it's finest - everyone should play them. @brok Tell that to my uncle. He served.

@BigBad95 NO cause then it wouldn't be Call of Duty. It would just be another Halo that sucks. Seriously, just keep making Modern Warfare 2, 3, 4 ,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10... until whatever you know?

well hopefully treyarch will take their time with this game if it gets made. To me COD:WaW was just a game that was rushed and to me had no point cause they had everything the same that was in COD4 which was good on one hand but yet alot of things wrong on the other hand. To me the ONLY thing that they got really good on was the Nazi zombies, which were good for about a week then got annoying.

sgtandy, If you mod the game, it ends up being far better than what it was originally. What works for the game is atmosphere and environment. The really well-constructed missions make you feel like you're in a real live war. The difficulty of the game was absolutely absurd at times. They tried to make it a fun shooter at times but the game engine simply didn't match.

"I actually like Operation Flashpoint. It was most certainly not the most playable game in the world, but once you got the hang of it, it was pretty fun." I have Operation Flashpoint. Luckily, I had bought it at a cheap price. I cannot understand what anyone likes about this game. The movement physics are a joke. The graphics are bland and amateurish. The sound is atrocious and laughable. The gunfire sounds unrealistic and the voices are done (badly) by one guy. The first two Delta Force games by Novalogic came out before OF and they are far better in all aspects.

sgtandy, I actually like Operation Flashpoint. It was most certainly not the most playable game in the world, but once you got the hang of it, it was pretty fun. But yes, the whole World War III NATO vs. Warsaw Pact scenario has not been explored thuroughly enough. Back in the day, they made games like Harpoon, Red Storm Rising, and Team Yankee. They should go back to those themed games. Makes for some really epic battles. Imagine holding the line right behind the tanks with Cobras and Apaches screaming overhead, and the lights of F-15s and F-16s higher up in the sky. As for the characters, I say you be able to play a 1st Infantry Division infantryman and a 1st Armored Division tank crewman in West Germany, a British Royal Marine in Norway, and maybe a "side" mission in an AC-130 again over Germany.

Whether it would be developed by Treyarch or a bunch of 10-year-olds who think they are game designers, it would be a big improvement over that awful Operation Flashpoint game.

New title: Call of Duty: Cold War Plot: In post-World War Two Berlin, American soldiers sit on one side of the Berlin Wall and stare at it, while Russian soldiers sit on the other side and do the same thing. Additional comments: Fight boredom with all your might! Chase after some friendly German lasses for a roll in the hay! Watch as idling tanks actually rust before your eyes!

''We took part in TONS of proxy wars, from Vietnam to supplying and training the Afghanis.'' I'm talking about the americans actually fighting the soviets in 1918 not when the americans really took the USSR seriously. As some of you may know, their was more to the beginning of the cold war then the korean war and the soviet union taking half of post-nazi germany,

MW2 should involve the US Navy SEALs, doing missions stealthy and at night with the SEALs should be awesome, Urban missions, jungle missions, desert missions and sea missions like in ships or oil facilities. It also should involve a reagular force like the Marines and we should be able to use Humvees and Abrams.

well if its entirely based on Vietnam, im not buying it. that would suck. but if its cold warfare involving the soviet union and the cold war then that would be the best call of duty in my book. cant wait to see what actually happens.

I actually liked the CONFLICT games for the X-Box. Desert Storm, Desert Storm 2, Global Terror. Vietnam was a little bit weaker, but the RPG elements, such as experience and attribute increases, made the soldiers more personable, Not to mention vehicle interaction, 1st and 3rd person view, and SAME SYSTEM 4-PLAYER co-op (impossible to find nowadays). Totally boosted it's replay-ability 10 fold. It's a shame that 360 Conflict game gave in, basically scrapped it's original formula, and conformed to a bland-flavored 1st person only style of game... Oh yeah, the new Call of Duty... Looks pretty promising

Personally, i think they should follow World in Conflict's lead and do a fictional World War III between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in Central Europe. That subject has not been explored thuroughly enough, in my opinion. There were many games made on the subject back in the 1980s, but once the Cold War ended, nobody gave a hoot anymore. If I was making the game, I'd have it take place in either 1985, 1987, or 1988 and have the Warsaw Pact invade West Germany. They could do what they did in the World War II CoD games, have you play an American infantryman, a British infantryman, and maybe some other characters here and there. @tidusjeff: We took part in TONS of proxy wars, from Vietnam to supplying and training the Afghanis. There's a reason this terrorist issue has been called by some, "Blowback". Most of that took place under the banner of the cold war, so a game that focused on those conflicts, and the espionage would be pretty cool. Treyarch won't do that however. They'll make some vanilla shooter with 80's weapons and call it "Cold War". ****s

''i don't think it's possible to do a cold war game, if only for the simple reason that america and russia never actually fought each other directly.'' From what I know about the russain civil war, the US fought with the Czechoslovakians and other armies to support the white army in order to overthrow the soviets. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Call of Duty: Cold Warfare? So you play as an American soldier.... waiting for the Berlin Wall to fall in 1998? There wasn't actually any shots fired during the Cold War, hence the 'Cold' bit.

a vietnam game would be really good for the COD franchise i almost didnt by COD:WAW bc i didn't think they should be doing another WWII game because most people already know what happened what they don't know is what happened in the wars like korea and vietnam there have been some bad vietnam games but at least treyarch knows a little bit more about what there doing then those other game developers
