Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

@ great_rulo You keep waiting... Infinity Ward is dead and will never make another COD game, guaranteed. At least not one that's better than anything Treyarch will make. Black Ops will blow MW2 out of the water.

zodiackilla, I totally agree. I enjoy and laugh out loud when I get behind a structure and I am shooting at another person who is also behind a structure. Both of us ducking in and out until someone gets the other. That is a good time! :)

Who cares if someone else thinks a game that you like sucks. If you like it, play it and play it how you want to play it. There is no rule against camping and other so called cheating or dirty gameplay techniques, so quit complaining and accept that others do it. I play the game to unwind and have a good time. I could care less about how the other individuals play the game. Of course, I will say an expletive to myself at the time of my death, but I don't hate on the individual doing it. The only real problem that I have is with the glitchers which is cheating.

why do people hate on campers so much if you think about it campers are really just smart people who like to wait for the rambo run and gun die and respawn players (halo players thats you)that use no brain while playing to run right past them shooting everything that moves like a monkey could do if it was playing how about try and use your brain and take your time it makes the game much more tense when you do find someone like a real firefight oh wait thats right everyone that plays mw2 is under 10 years old sorry keep playin doom, quake, halo style I will be waiting around the corner for the easy kill lol

The weird thing is that even though World At War was such a awesome game, not many people play it nowadays.. Im hoping the cooperative can be for the campaign. It was really enjoyable in the past.

Lets hope Treyarch can restore some respect to the COD franchise in the multiplayer section. My only worry is that millions of campers/noobs will buy this, expecting it to be MW2.1, therefore ruining the game.

@ xtremeflem2day Doesn't require skill? I'd say it requires a lot of skill to win against hackers and exploiters that can see you through walls, among other things. Just because you're bad at/don't like a game doesn't mean it doesn't require any skill.

@Tauu wow god forbid someone to have a different genre preference than you! FPS are great but what would you have us buy? the same old generic JRPG about the same lame adventure of "X" who must kill the evil king "Y" to save the kingdom of "Z"? and how exactly are we helping the industry by not buying this game? Boycotts are one of the most useless things in the world next to petitions, no-one will give a hoot if anyone buys this game or not and you most certainly will not get any recognition if you decide to boycott this.

@ Death_Blade_182 - i think most of activisions customers are unfortunately just as douchey.. or don't have any clue what activision is but they just know all their friends are like omg play call of duty its like totally great, you're not allowed to speak unless you play this game i miss the days when videogames were just for people with glasses and/or skin care issues, who probably didn't go outside as much as they should, and when multiplayer meant you had to have someone else in your house, so it was a big event that deserved humpty dumpty party mix and a final fantasy soundtrack on continuous loop, and you were made fun of at school for it, but yknow what it was something special.. once something becomes socially accepted by the "cool kids" it goes down the crapper..

"In a later press release, Activision announced players will now get to play a pivotal role as a CIA agent, deep behind enemy lines. Take part if the slaughtering of Cambodian civilians to keep your cover. Because the big bad just isn't bad enough unless you get roast a few civilians." I'll pass on this like I passed on MW2. This beginning to smell the like the stupid Sims games.

Although I really do hate activision for their treatment of the Cod franchise, and the team of Infinity Ward, I really have nothing against Treyarch. I hate to say it, but I hope it turns out good.

i think Treyarch will pull it off, they've seen the bad points of both modern warfare 2 and waw, the cod games will never be perfect for everyone, but they're not stupid, i think they will listen to what the community has to say and make as good a game as they can

No one's gonna actually buy this game, right? I mean, not because it's gonna be bad or anything, but because it's Activision we're talking about, they're a bunch of douches, they don't deserve our support.

@Ryan_Som "Believe it or not, it IS possible to only own one platform and not be a fanboy." LOL, couldn't agree more. I only have a PS3, and want a 360 terribly, but I have other obligations. I know that you teens may find it difficult to believe that there are more important things in life than video games. While I would love to own a 360 and PS3 and just piss away my day in front of the TV, I have bills to pay and other things more important. While I would love to own all the systems, and love all of them (except the Wii) I can't justify spending $300 on a new 360 when I barely made rent. God I hate college.

@Flint247 I wasn't trying to troll anyone. I'm just saying I think it's dumb that someone got knocked on for simply stating their system of preference and why it is for this game. If someone said, "I'm getting FFXIII for PS3 because it looks better," I could accept that. Hell, I only own a PS3 and I made sure to warn my friend with a PS3 and 360 to get the 360 version of Ghostbusters because the PS3 version looked worse by comparison. Believe it or not, it IS possible to only own one platform and not be a fanboy.

I can't wait for this game, for me Treyarch hass vastly underrated, IW has overshadowed them overwhelmingly. I really loved the WW2 setting in WAW, it was the best WW2 game in my mind. I've been waiting awhile for a COD Vietnam game and I expect Treyarch to deliever here.

I enjoyed Call of Duty 4 (really, who didn't?) and World at War. But I hated MW2 with a passion. I think I will buy this, becuase it is such an original and unqiue game, and it's probably going to have lots of gore. Yay! If you agree, reply or thumbs up.
