Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

Lets all buy an ORIGINAL game this year, forget these milked series like Halo and COD. Lets support creativity and buy Alan Wake and ModNation Racers. Those are some games actually worth throwing down some bucks on for their creativity and hard work. I just cant stomach another generic FPS like COD or Halo! I will not be a lemming and mindlessly buy another milked series! lol

Im sorry, but Im about as excited for another COD game as I am with another Halo game. Enough is enough, I get the point! Make something else. I have enough COD games, theyre all too similar. So similar in fact that MW2 recycles maps from COD4 with the stimulus package. I have three COD games, thats enough considering they're all the same!

I'd rather play one of the many other games coming out this year instead of spending another sixty dollars on a game that will likely be the same as the last three. The campaigns are great, but where i lose interest is the multiplayer which is sadly the highlight of the game. All you do is go around killing people until a little bar on the bottom fills up. Then you get to do it again! There is no strategy whatsoever. Usually the only reason you kill somebody is because you saw them first. And what kind of army has people randomly running around a map with nobody sticking together and nobody strategizing? I seriously hope these games will die out so something better can take its place. Call of Duty 4 was good for a while, but the last two games make me wish i didn't waste my money on them.

@jsrco That would be AWESOME!! Never thought of that myself, maybe something like BF2142? Hopefully it brings a little more into the series than MW2 did. I really regret buying it.

I am probably in the minority... but I would rather have a Hexen or futuristic styled Call of Duty. I am really tired of past war shooters.

I just hope this game has more content than MW2. MW2 was expensive and it lasted about 2 weeks, the short 3 acts campaign and specops. The Multiplayer wasnt brutal enough...it was so gay how money cam out when you shot people....why not make it so you can paint your enemies red and blow their limbs off liek in W@W? MW2 was a failure. Ill pay 65 for blackops if its long and gorey.

so its just a title, and has no emphasis on stealth or anything that real black ops would? I was hoping this was an announcement about the new type of COD games, and this one was gonna be stealth ... but I guess I should already know that creativity and innovation aren't the trademarks of COD brand, let aloen those who holds its rights now. Way to waste a good title on an unfitting product, dummies.

well, thats interesting. glad they didnt go with wwii yet again. still, probably not going to get this because 1. the market has become way too oversaturated with COD, just like it has with music games and 2. there are too many other games im going to be busy playing

@Sirbobislost,,,, Bungie said one of the rumors the last few hours after the announcement of its agreement with Activision, its possible participation in the Call of Duty series, as a substitute for Infinity Ward, who in recent days have been losing key members. Bungie's Brian Jarrard said that although the contract is for ten years to work on a major new series for action, this does not mean they can not work on other licenses Activision. 'Working on Call of Duty is a discussion that may arise at any time, but they contacted us specifically for the vision we have, and the universe of games we want to do in the next decade. " "Nobody knows if there will be other talks to have the opportunity to work in other areas, but this was not the main purpose of this agreement." Jarrard has not lost the opportunity to comment on a possible project together with the Blizzard, saying, "The fact that now we are 'brothers' Blizzard is something that makes us feel very well." "I'm not sure it is still early to say whether we work with them. But in all Activision are very different experiences that we have internally, so we'll definitely think about the theme for our next game."

Hmmmm. Probably the last Call of Duty (and also Activision) game I'll buy. If there's no dedicated servers for PC forget it, although I heard there was so I'm guessing Treyarch learnt from IW's mistakes. Tred carefully, Treyarch.

While it is getting annoying how fast these games are being released I'll still get it. I love the COD games. I'm so sick of people complaining about MW2, it was a great game, if you don't like it then don't play it, it's that simple. As for the amunt of camping, well all games have that and it's not a big deal, man just be aware of your surroundings, it's not hard....babies.

@luckjon 6 months of developing time? are you stupid? the Majority of Cod games take 18 - 24 months to develop, they usually announce games when they are roughly half way though ( or more ). please get your facts right before slating a game.

I have always thought Treyarch did a better job with the series, at least the single player anyway. The only way I see this being any good is if Treyarch goes all out. But having said that is looks promising and it seems as if Treyarch is trying to step out of IW shadow by making a better CoD; which is good for us gamers :)

No more CoD games for me. :(. as has been said, this game will beat the sales of WaW, maybe not MW2 as not an IW product but still, I feel soooo sad to see a great series relegated to a football game-esque annual installment. :(. RIP. CoD
