Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

I love how you guys all try to be cool and say how bad this game will be. Just because CoD 4 was better that MW2 doesn't mean MW2 is bad. I've had tons of fun with MW2 and I know you have to. This game will probably be very good so don't kid yourselves.

Does'nt really matter what name they give it (MW, MW2, Black Ops, blah-blah-blah), its still the same old mindless generic run-n-gun, with the same old camping nade thowing noobs, and a comical weapon upgrade / perk system. If this was R6 or GR: Black Ops, i would actually be interested. Ill probably get this from the bargain bin a couple of weeks after launch simply for the SP component.

One of the guns I saw in the trailer was post Cold-War era and the room the camera was swaying around in looked like a modern server room of today...What's going on here?

Fools will buy it. And this will make Activision even more richer and continue to release more COD games as usual.

@theexperience13 No, not every CoD game has to be sold then, but historically it is the best time to sell any game, period. That's mainly because it is right before Black Friday and the Christmas present buying frenzy. It's totally obnoxious to us as gamers because we will buy a game at any time of the year. But casual gamers (especially parents) tend to focus a lot of their buying at that time. Really that goes for all products, not just games. Meanwhile game sales especially tend to do extremely poorly in the 2nd quarter, so as gamers we tend to have this nasty gap in games in the spring. Release dates are driven by sales, and unfortunately, that tends to mean some of the bigger companies will force out a game unfinished, just to make that November cutoff. It sucks, but I don't see it changing any time soon.

@Flint247 Yep, you've actually hit on AV's strong point: Marketing. Their game making ability for the most part is no different from the smaller companies like EA or TakeTwo. Furthermore, their employee relations tends to be rather on the poor side. But what they excel at is advertising, ESPECIALLY to the casual gamer. Most casuals never come to a site like this where they can get real information, but they do go to Yahoo or MSN or Google. We'll probably start seeing prime time TV ads for it too (if not already). Such advertising works really well when it's a well known license, that people liked before. EA tries to do it, but they wait too long or do it with new licenses (such as Dragon Age's ads, though I still think it did improve that game's sales some, just not as much.) That's the real reason AV tends to clean other companies clocks on sales, and is the reason companies like Bungie sign with them. @Dr_Ten I have a feeling you're right.

Another CoD. Already. Another overly-hyped 40 minute campaign-long shooter with the price tag over 60 bucks. The worst part is that people will actually buy the game and support Activision. I'll drive through...

All the people here acting like internet tough guys saying they won't buy this game know they actually will. You bought MW2 and everyone else did too. When all your friends buy this and that's all they play online, you'll have to buy it also just to play with them. Its the way of the world.

I will not buy this when it comes out unless the reviews are extremely good but wait... the reviews of Modern Warfare 2 were good too in the beginning. Maybe i'll buy it if Steam has a 50% or more discount. I must say i just don't like the Vietnam war compared to WW2.

Infinity Ward made the game engine for all CoD games. Activision then provides the game engine to TreyArch for them to make a quick money grab off a crappy game. All of TreyArch's re-hashes were terrible compared to IW's games. CoD3 and WaW were pretty awful.

The campaign won't be that good just because of the ending. All of the CoD games had a pretty epic ending but I don't know how they will pull it off, seeing as we lost.

considering how crazy world at war was...i mean you could roast soldiers and dogs with the flame thrower...so im sure the grit level is to the max, anybody notice how limbs in this thing just explode into bits?!?!.... its gonna be nice to see what they bring to the table for this...hell we might even get real feeling COD out of the deal...not some Hollywood style MW BS...and lets hope they kept the fun factor of zombies and teleporters...

This is gonna suck. Please, Treyarch, STOP making Call of Dutys, and please Activision, since your ace staff has been ripped apart, take your time on the next one AFTER this one at least. Not every CoD needs to be released in the 2nd week of November annually

They should do a multi-player beta for this COD. I may skip Black Ops this year if it will be like MW2 with all the glitches and such.

@cyborg100000 Actually Treyarch has been at work on it since WAW wrapped in Fall '08. Boith IW and Treyarch took two years for each game (except Cod 3, which is why it was rushed and sucked) This game looks F*ucking awesome. Bring on the zombies!

@JeWiShCoWbOy77 you may want to do your homework concerning Vietnam, that war went on for a good 15 years, during that time there were plenty of major offenses such as the Tet Offensive, Operation Rolling Thunder, the desperate and friutless days which led up to the Fall of Saigon There are plenty of other ones that im having a hard time remembering aswell, i can vaugley remember one known as "Operation Menu" i beleive that's what it was called anyway, there was more to that war, but 15 years is a long long time, theres bound to be periods that are somewhat "Quieter" than others, there isnt going to be a major battle every single day during a war, maybe minor firefights & skirmishes, its because troops need supplies and periods of time to build up and get ready for such an offensive as for the booby traps and mines, well U.S. forces had sent out plenty of patrols, and the Viet-Cong knew where most of them would go to, from what i recall there were alot of spy networks that the Viet-Cong utilized
