Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

You can talk about military cover ups from 40 years ago that may be in this game but no one question whether 9/11 may feature as a mission in call of duty BLACK OPS, gamespot will threaten to ban you for it!

If it werent for the fact that COD is going to Vietnam this whole series would be dead to me, but this is their one saving grace that could save them.

This seems like it would be good. But they need to fix the online though. It's a glitch fest. Between the hackers, glitches, and spawn system, it sometimes gets annoying. The online could use some help. Hopefully it'll be better on BO.

Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's... Isn't it Zampella and West who were fired? Did Pachter forecasted that one of the fired members ex founders of Infinity Ward was going to change its last name?!

Tell you how to improve this game over COD MW 2, get rid of the crack pipe idea of heart beat sensors, take away the BS slash you from across the room, while your shooting me mele, make totally destructible environments, and add some vehicles................oh wait that's Battlefield Bad Company 2,........you know what that's the game to play! You better smarten up, and stop puttin' out these chinsy games Activision, or your gonna be second fiddle soon.

I will not a buy another call of duty again, but only when its like the game thats going to be released on 11/10/10. I buy original games, not remakes. WaW though it was a lot like MW 1, it was a very nice change from the same WW2 plot. I will never ever buy another MW game, and I will continue to buy Treyarch games because they will always release something innovative and something new that we have not yet played before. Unfortunately, my money will be going to greediness (Activision), but I buy stuff for my happiness and joy. So people are also saying that another CoD is bad, but for three years, they have made quality FPS games that have created a huge fanbase. You don't get a fanbase like CoD from crappy games...... And the newer bad company series has created a good fanbase, because they have quality games... Also dont forget Halo, Gears of War, AC, etc. So you know what, yell at me for spending my money on CoD, but they have made great games for the past 5- 6 years or whatever it is.

@aaronfhff123 , I agree with you in a way, but you cant say that WaW didnt take most of its ideas from MW. I agree WaW improved on it, but I gotta say they are both equal, and deserve a 9.5 rating.

@DarqKiller your wrong...W@W was different from MW in that you could actually paint the bodies of your enemies red with your bullets and you could blow off limbs....not just one arm of one enemy in the whole game like in MW. W@W had co-op campaign and Zombies too. W@W was the best COD ever.

Im gonna give this game a chance who knows it will probably be really really good. What I fear though is Activision. I hope that just because they lost so many fans that they have to release a new COD asap just to "regain" there fan base back. It's a pretty good idea now all that is left is a good game that everyone will enjoy. No screw ups Activision and Treyarch this is your chance to regain yourself. BTW I know that Activision has screwed up a lot but I still believe they he what it takes. But if they screw up this thats it for me.

Considering the general attitude activision's been taking with both the customers and their own darn teams, i'm surprised anyone wants to support their company by buying what will no doubt be a cheap 3 hour long re-hash Activision brought a total crud storm down on itself and I for one wouldn't play this game if I got it for free ._. Heck i'm surprised anyone even wants to pick up the series, considering they might just kick them out the door too after it's finished

At least we're getting a different era, from the looks of the Trailer t looks like it'll primarily be the operations in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Cuba, and Central America during the Cold War. Though I wish they would have made it purley about Vietnam or Korea, or if it was another WWII Game, tell the story of the Eighth Air Force or set it entirely in the Pacific and the China-Burma-India Theaters of the war

When was the last time treyarch made a new IP? before the millenium? and by new IP i do not mean a game-movie tie in or an extra game in an existing series. Using gamespot's site I found Die by the Sword in 1998 and Dragon's Blood in 2000. It just shows sell ur company to Activision, your creative direction is lobotomised and you will be producing ports all day long. No more of my money going to call of duty henceforth

Activision must be thinking right now (damn if we had abandoned the PS3, we would not have sold 40 million games on the PS3) will now sell millions of copies of BLACK OPS and MW3 on the PS3, and still had an agreement with Bungie to bring PS3 games for,,,,, the life of many turns, but is forgiven by me dear Activision ^_^

I really hope they bring this out for the Wii too. If you can do it with World at War and Modern Warfare, why not this? 360 and PS3 fans are already fed up with COD while Wii owners get brushed aside every year.

@Lost-Memory yes good point, I hope they bring back their Nazi mode because that one of the biggest saving points W@W had. If they can perfect it and expand on that it will be their biggest strength to overcome MW2, with a bit of actually caring about more than money.

Not interested, MW2 was riding the coat tails of the already good system yet was riddled with bugs that shows that they didn't care about consumers, just the money. I'm not supporting that any more. Give me a company that really cares like Valve.

sacrilege83 - has activision ever cared about the community? all they care about is their wallets. either way you see it, going back to cod4, you are still supporting them lol. the day activision takes 3-5 years for a new game, instead of rushing their developers to get it completed by a certain date, is the day i would consider buying a game with activision printed on it.

I don't see how this does any good for the online community. It just splits the community apart having a yearly game. I think I'll just revert back to COD4 and stick with that.

Bet we'l start of in the Korean war for at least the tutorial, then get bumped up to special ops. We'l take a tour in Vietnam, kill some Eastern bloc spies in Cuba during the missile crisis, take a second tour in Vietnam, then perhaps back in time for tea in Moscow to assassinate some KGB officials and rescue a defector. Sounds like an awesome game.
