Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

@Fandango_Letho Then don't play them. CoD games are developed by American development companies and so they tend to make games based around American events, whether they are fictional or factual. European developers do the same thing and guess what? So do Japanese developers! Personally I felt the British were made more badass in Modern Warfare compared to the Americans.

Now will begin Activision's flood of terrible COD games now that they have stolen COD rights entirely. Looks like we can look forward to a year of bad COD games.how many did they have planned at least 4. One a adventure game by sledgehammer? Yeah this is failure with a bow on it.

Remember people, Treyarch is Actvision's Title studio only. They make games like Spiderman, Quantum of Solace... blah blah blah...etc. They spend little money for Treyarch to create a title and then Activision profits millions from the name rather it is a good game or not.

@stakex007 people who say W@W was horrible never played through the game...and if you think it was short try MW2's 3 act campaign. W@W was at least longer than MW2 and blowng pple away in MW2 was just boring...you dont see any red stains on them like in W@W to see where your bullets hit just a little red puss that comes from an invisible wound and you cant blow ppls limbs off with explosves in MW2. W@W has the puss and a wound where the red stuff comes from and you can blwo limbs off. W@W also had better MP and the Zombie maps blow away and downloadable MW2 pack. MW2 is lame...it could have been awesoem but it was lame

Its sad how MW2 gets more praise than W@W just because its modern...other than that W@W is alot more fun. THe co-op in W@W isn't just a few spec-op missions and the zombie maps you can dl are so much fun compared tot he boring carnageless maps of MW2...another thing about MW2 why didnt they use the carnage from W@W in their game? W@W was so fun painting enemies red with guns and blowin there limbs off. MW2 was lame. This next game will be great, i just hope the campaign is long and they keep the bullet wounds and gore intact from W@W.

I dont understand why people are saying that they wont buy you know you are all full of it this game will sell no matter what its CALL OF DUTY its a AAA game development company which means it better be good or they dont have jobs I will most likely be getting this game first day of launch if not in the first week then but we will see by how they market it and what features it will have

That's nice. I'm not buying it. Also, way to announce your game early to try and take focus off of the fact that you're ruining everything Activision. Also I feel bad for the guys at Treyarch because I'm sure they're under a lot of pressure now as a result of all of this.

Ah, the annual episode of the "Fake COD Boycott" Show: thousands of negative comments full of moderated tiny stars. Then, when the time comes, record breaking sales followed by thousands of half-negative, "apologizive" comments criticizing Activision still, but praising COD Instead.

I respect Treyarch and I praise them for doing a good job at porting Modern Warfare 1 for Wii (which I like a lot). But I'll skip out on this one. Sorry, Treyarch.

Oh great. Another '' John McBadass '' american hero that'll go Steven Seagal on asian and eastern european people. But seriously. When will you guys ever accept that there are other countries on this Earth? We're kind of really tired to be playing those USA vs '' the other part of the world '' games. Except hillbillies that shoots tin cans with their gatling guns in their yards. I guess they'll never get tired of this same '' cowboys vs indians '' setting.

I still fail to see where WaW was such a good game. The single player was short, un-immersive, suffered from poor map making (or rather lack of finished maps... most noteably edges of maps), and was pretty much the same thing as every COD since the first one. MP was little better with horribly annoying issues like bad spawn locations, small unbalanced maps, and more hackers then I care to think about. Nothing at all personal against thoes that liked the game... but I just fail to see how such a horrible game could sell so well. If it didn't have the Call of Duty name it would have been a flop, but because it says COD on it everyone just loves it. People are far to loyal to brand names, and not loyal enough about good game design/implimentation.So while this game might be good or bad... it will be a hit, simply because it says COD. And rest assured, it will get good rateings and sales simply for its name and nost based on something silly..... like how good it actually is.

Oh, yet another Call of Duty game. I've been a fan of the series since the first game on the PC, which is still the best game in the series. Still, I'm completely sick and tired of this series now, and will not be buying it. My money will be spent on the Legendary Edition of Halo: Reach instead.

Some of you people here are really ungrateful bastards for criticizing IW because if it wasn't for them there'd be no Treyarch and not to mention that Treyarch used IW MW engine for their game WAW.

CoD 5 had great co-op gameplay and a nice zombie mode, I guess I will pick this up when it comes out. But if they dare remove offline co-op and offline multi-player like in MW2, then they can go get hit by a meteor and die.
