Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

Who says WaW was bad? I actually think it was quite good, even though there was all the 'SUPERMP40JUGGERNOOBLASTSTAND' crap, which I admit frustrated me quite a lot...but hey, doesn't MW2 have noobtubers, campers and cheaters too? This happens because of they year-by-year cycle crap Activision forces onto its workers...I say if they only stalled the release by a year and kept working on it a bit, it would ahelluva lot better than the recycled crap Call of Duty games are becoming...

@ benjy117 well that's your opinion (not fact) and i respect that but i and many others do really enjoy Treyarch games (i personally really enjoyed COD: WAW and have played on COD3 which was good as well. (no COD in my opinion is better than COD4 though, but Treyarch is good)

Will there be dedicated server support? Let's find out if Activision or the ex-staffers at Infinity Ward were the bad guys.

@mightEone Yes, World At War was exactly the same as MW, it's not like they added new fire physics and effects to the engine, updated the look of the engine, gave the game Co-op campaign mode, co-op survival mode or an entirely new setting and plot . Nah, it was the exact same thing with reskinned guns. You know what this is called? A bandwagon, ever since MW people always jump on this one because it makes them feel "Sophisticated". People said MW was a reskin of CoD 3, people said WaW was a reskin of MW, people said MW2 was a reskin of MW, and now people are going to say that Black Ops is going to be a reskin of MW2. If this game is the Madden of FPS, Final Fantasy is the Madden of RPGs, Silent Hill is the Madden of Survival Horror, S.T.A.L.K.E.R is the Madden of Survival Shooters. You get the idea. Just because a sequel has similar gameplay to it's predecessor, doesn't mean it's a "reskin", it means it's a sequel.

I am no longer a fan of CoD but I do appreciate how Treyarch doesn't name their games "CoD 2/Cod 4" and such. An actual subtitle is win. I wonder if Activision will lower the prices back down to $10 for DLC for this game. I highly doubt so, but I can hope, right?

People I know on the outside this game looks great and sounds fantastic. Vietnam... can't get much more bad azz then that. We all need to face reality though. This game will have the same engine from Call Of Duty 4. Almost same everything. All the developer is doing is reskinning everything. Yeah, make the soldiers LOOK different, yeah make the guns LOOK different. In the end, this is going to be the same game as Modern Warefare 2 but with vietnam jungle maps. COD had turned into Madden with guns. Same thing every year.

@gamerlegend10 I'm sorry but Treyarch isn't awesome. They are Activision's Hollywood title developer and that's it. They don't get a big budget and they have yet to make a "GREAT" game after all these years. This is fact and not fiction.

The only problem with the Treyach CoD I played (CoD:WaW) was that on Veteran, it was apparent that the game was too glitchy for the difficulty they programmed. I got through it, but there was way too many occasions where I had to retry a section 10 times even though playing almost perfectly, only to breeze through it on the 11th try when I was playing terribly just because I got lucky and didn't run into one of the many glitches. In short, it just wasn't polished enough. Maybe that's the problem with Treyach releasing a CoD every two years, with a Wii port inbetween. This game "looks" fine, and will no doubt be an exciting, loud CoD game just like all the others, but I would really like to see it be a little more polished than WaW.

I don't see how they can make another COD after this. This has gone on way too long. Aside from capitalizing on another historic war, there is nothing really new they can do. They story might be different, but it will still be the same multiplayer and trying to get all those Killstreaks on new maps. They don't even have vehicles to run around in. I'm sorry eveyone, but this has got to END, or really, really change OUTRIGHT......

I've been playing the series since the beginning, and even I think it has gone a bit too far. That said, Treyarch does a great job with the title and I can't wait for this game. Just no more after that unless it's truly original (like this should be), because frankly, I'd say the majority of the titles in the franchise are subpar.

I am going to say this one more time. Treyarch has been making quality games for a pretty long time now. Once a game studio (infinity ward) builds up such a fan base, fan boys are creates.... Than when another genre of the same type of game comes out, BAM, they dont give it a try and they dislike it. Treyarch has/and still is being attacked by thousands of fan boys from Infinity Ward AND these new Bad Company fanboys. I can't wait for this game to come out, because 1. Its extremely original looking, and 2. Treyarch is one of my favorite gaming studios.. I mean just look at this release trailer. It already has show us so much info on the game.

I wonder if the online part will have cheaters as well. I gotten so disgusted with moderen warfare 2 do to cheating I hardly play it anymore. They should just forget the online and make the single player longer otherwise I will wait till it comes down in price and buy it used. After all if there's a game that's not worth paying full price I don't get it till way later.

Looks like another great weekend rental. Im sure the campaign will be intense and fun but will be over just like that. You just cant make a quality long lasting campaign in the little 2 year cycle Activision is forcing them to do. I thought World at War was great and im sure this will be better. I burned myself out with COD4 online and WAW and MW2 online is basically the same recycled online with different maps and perks and such. I find it amusing the haterz on here bashing it and treyarch. The ppl bashing this game will be lining up at midnite to get it....they just wanna act like children and wine and moan because the fact is...most of them probably are children. This game will rock but im sure it will have the series trademark 6-8 hour campaign which kinda forces players like me who enjoy the single play expeirence to hold back on the purchase. I dunno maybe ill be ready for some more COD online come November..maybe you will too.

anyways, COD has got to stop releasing games every single year on the exact same date. COD is running it's life into the ground with these constantly releasing sequels. How about a COD title that is worked on for 2, or maybe 3 years, and a product that everybody loves, not just semi-casual gamers who love FPS's and the COD name.

I know people are worried about the CoD series, WHICH YOU SHOULD BE, but this game really is going to spark the real birth of Treyarch. Treyarch is looked at as the people who make a game just so activision can make money, but they are about to make one hell of a game, and remember me, because I am the one who told you that this game is going to be what Modern Warfare 2 failed to be.. I like MW 2, but not as good as i wanted it to be.

The one thing i never get about this site is how nearly every comment is a complaint or a "im not gona buy this crap", why do ye read an artical if your not interested in the game? or maybe ye dont read it, ye just click on it to try make your pointless opinion that nobody cares about heard! And i know im doing that now but all i can say to that is, never seen a hypochrite before? :P

Well let's be honest hampton2003, this is a Treyarch game, not an Infinity Ward game. The CoD franchise has been known to have the best gameplay based on the IW games. World at War was a good game, just not of the same caliber that Modern Warfare was. While the campaign in MW2 was kinda clunky storywise, I have a hard time seeing this new Treyarch game having the selling power that a IW Call of Duty game has had anyway.

the problem is people are aware of activisions problems and greed, so the fans have lost alot of respect for the series. It will still sell well, but more and more people are getting wise to activisions crap, so dont expect it to beat mw2's launch.
