Call of Duty Black Ops 3 Was 2015's Best-Selling Game as Franchise Passes 250 Million Units

Black Ops III propels Call of Duty to number one.

Activision's Call of Duty series has once again topped the sales charts, with the publisher claiming the latest iteration, Black Ops III, was the best-selling game in 2015 worldwide.

According to the publisher, it was 2015's top seller "by a wide margin in both units and dollars sold through." In North America, Call of Duty was the best-selling franchise for the seventh year in a row, according to NPD data released today. The franchise has now topped the 250 million units sold mark. This is the first update on lifetime sales for the series since November 2014, prior to the release of Advanced Warfare (and Black Ops III).

"This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, and would not be possible without the incredible passion from the Call of Duty community," Rob Kostich, Activison's president and general manager of the Call of Duty franchise, said in a statement shared with GameSpot. "We congratulate Treyarch on creating an incredibly engaging and an enormously fun game with Black Ops III and look forward to what's to come in 2016."

Black Ops III was released on November 6 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It introduced some new, Titanfall-esque movement mechanics, such as wallrunning, to the series. It also featured a four-player cooperative campaign with a progression system and a Zombies mode built around larger, more in-depth maps. You can read GameSpot's review here.

Black Ops III was among the three best-selling games on Amazon during the holiday season, along with Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront. (It didn't specify which was number one.) It's also had a strong start to 2016 at retail in the UK. The NPD Group's list of best-selling game was topped last year by Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, with Grand Theft Auto V beating out Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013. Keep in mind, however, that NPD data only tracks new, physical sales at retail in the US.

One of the best years in gaming history and still the top seller is a mediocre CoD.

@nyran125tk: They don't number them that way any more. It either has a name (like "Ghosts") or part of a series (Like Black Ops 3, Modern Warfare 4)

I got the game. This game is totally overrated and over hyped. I play it and enjoy it. But it is generic as anything out there and truly nothing special among shooter games. Its the same ole run and gun shooter that its always been.

@johnnyboy787: Yes, they do, but that's no reason why non-shooter franchises should be converted into shallow, "me too" shooters in an attempt at CoD dollars. Remember when Resident Evil was good?

And someone should be interested in this...why? It took, what, 12 games in just as many years, on several different systems to finally reach that number? There's plenty of other much more worthwhile franchises that have sold a 100 million+ copies on fewer systems and way less time. Like iphones, CoD players are sheep, moving on to the next release despite claiming that a previous game was one of the best. If it was the best, then you should still be playing it instead of giving them more money to just keep making sequels. Also, why isn't CoD just an MMO by now? It's been proven how few people even bother to with the campaign.

@GregoryBastards: none of the single player games you mentioned have anything to do with the fact that cod was the top seller of the year. Come on did you really think any of the those single player games you mentioned could beat cod in sales. Not saying they arent good games. Witcher got game of the year by gamespot or ign so why are you even complaining lol

@Techtroll: So you're saying that multiplayer games no matter how shitty will always trump single player game sales now..???..no matter the superior quality of single player games..??....that's a fucked up state the industry is in if you ask me.

@GregoryBastards: no you goof ball who taught you how to read? because they failed you and they should be fired and you should probably go back to grade school. You have taken my words like (cod) and twisted them to your liking (multiplayer). My whole point was cod vs singleplayer games. You couldnt even understand or get that and you turned it into multiplayer are better single player games. Please go and back and read properly before you comment and try to make an argument. And it still stands cod holds the crown facts are facts. Show me one offline single player game with numbers even close. You cant so why are u even trying to argue just makes you look dumb lol

@Techtroll: Hey no need to be rude man....im just saying...i know cod is easy to pick up and play...but its also true that it does nothing for the industry or even gamers....you know how easy it is to make a corridor shooter...not to mention a shooter that already has all assetts pre build.....all you gotta is up the resolution and texture maps each year and boom you got yourself another best selling game each year.....all the while other companies are busting their balls making hardware pushing gerne defining stuff like The Witcher 3....and what do they get in the end..?...bunch of awards and not enough sales.

@GregoryBastards: i not trying to be rude but im tired of arguing with nonsense and having my words taken out of context. It really didnt have to go this far. Why cant we all just love gaming for what it is and stop hating if u dont fancy it dont buy it but stop acting like cod did u wrong its pathetic already lol obviously millions upon millions love or wanted to get the game so your opinion is really not a shared view or else the game wouldnt sell. Youre honestly just a minority so u dont understand the whole cod phenomenon but believe me its real. Just because it aint your cup of tea doesn't mean it aint my cup of tea. You got to think outside the box and stop thinking about yourself when you put things in perspective.

@Techtroll: I think he's trying to enforce the fact that the games he mentioned make more sense to have a better appeal to people rather than COD, but here is the thing, COD is such an easy game to pick up and play that mostly anyone can jump on board and get to playing. It takes nothing but small skill to play COD. Kids and parents of today know nothing more than the Call of Duty series because Activision likes to regurgitate the same crap every year and the know for a fact people will buy their product. Just like with Apple. People actually went out of their way to upgrade from a an iPhone 6 to a 6s just so that they could have it. IF there was a game to be made where the point of the game was to shovel shit the whole time, you can bet your ass people would be buying it like hot cakes. The sad reality of it all is this, the industry has gotten lazy with putting out new IP's so they just stick to the mainstream CRAP. We can change this somehow, but someone has to have the effort to change it. If it isn't you, then why not me or average Joe?

@WWEKane1515: to him maybe but its all a matter of opinion. I cant get into single player campaigns the way i do with online shooters whether its bf or cod im always gonna gravitate towards an online shooter and for the sales numbers to be as high as they are im obviously not alone. I bought the witcher and i honestly wanted to get into it but got bored after a couple weeks. But fallout 4 was a different story i easily put 50+ hours into the game where i had two different characters one at 50 and one at lvl 79 no boosting.

But yeah the gaming industry is a joke right now and theyre pumping out half ass shit on a regular basis.

CoD article, cue folks wanting to complain how it plays ad nauseum. CoD and Destiny have the most dedicated sect of religious haters, just regurgitating the same crap repeatedly as if the people playing the game actually give a flying fu*k. Got to join the in crowd to hate the popular game just because, no real legitimate gripes since you know the game has multiple modes of play even with a short TTK, Kill confirmed makes you work harder for your kills. Sure campers get on your nerves but if you have a squad of players who are pretty good and partied up, camping won't really save you. If you can't deal with it play something else you freaking babies, omg. Grown enough to lodge complaints, yet not grown enough to move the fu*k on?!? Selective adulthood it seems many people have.

I play from time to time and I'm not even that good, but when I get on a roll I can be pretty menacing. Just enough wild action before I settle back into Xenoblade or Syndicate.

The success of this game really bums me out, because it means that there will be eight more of them. What if that same talented team was allowed to innovate with a new franchise and take a break from the modern/scifi military shooter.

Cod4 was and still is the best imo. i will no longer buy cod games, maybe if I can get them dirt cheap or rent em, but I'm done with the multiplayer. I'll just play the single player which doesn't warrant full price.

COD isn't bad because it's annualized. It's bad because it's a mindless twitch shooter with no objective. The time to kill is so low, it basically comes down to whoever sees the other first wins.

That's why people hate "campers" so much. They exploit this. If they sit in a spot waiting for someone, they'll get the kill. If there were an actual objective, or a reasonable time to kill, this wouldn't be a problem.

@zeldafan195: "it's a mindless twitch shooter with no objective" - which is actually a refreshing break from being balls deep in an RPG. Depending on which game mode you play there are objectives, albeit not as involved as some other games. The level design is such that people really can't camp like they used to be able to either (unless you're against a crap team). The bottom line is CoD serves it purpose and if it's not for you, that's fine, but other people do enjoy it.

@zeldafan195: There are multiple game modes to play, you make no sense. There is more than simply TDM if you actually played BO3. At least have information about the subject before shooting off at the mouth. Kill confirmed makes killing moot if you don't confirm the kill, so tell me that isn't an objective.

@zeldafan195: Actually, it's bad because it's popular. People hate popular, they try so bad to find reasons to hate it. Just look at what happened to the new Star Wars movie. Myself, I haven't played in years, but meh, I have learned to ignore it. However it does in the market, it doesn't make me any richer or poorer. Plenty of games out there to play anyways.

@ahpuck: You make a good point. I hate the games, because I think they are just repeated ripoffs of another game from 1998, but it's okay for others to like it. Maybe they never played that game because they didn't have a computer. There are definitely other bad games, but usually people just don't play them. Maybe that's what makes people angry.

It's like being in high school and the girls like this total scumbag meat-head for no reason, but pay no attention to the other kids who have flaws but are no better or worse than the meat-head.

@zeldafan195: There are a lot of objective based game-types for CoD online though... but the game generally is a frantic affair just due to the map design and like you mentioned, the kill time. It's a shooter anyone can pick up and be bound to get a few kills so it's not hard to see the appeal... doesn't mean it's bad just because it's simple, but I wouldn't call it a top tier shooter. The main gripe I have is that it feels like the exact same game since COD4 (which I thought was great at the time), so I just don't see the point anymore...

@nl_skipper: I disagree; I think the game has changed over the years for better or worse. If it hadn't I wouldn't miss the days of Modern Warfare and World at War (even those two were fairly different in how they played). Until Black Ops 3 my wife wasn't a big fan of the Black Ops games. She loved Advanced Warfare and is a bet on the fence with Black Ops 3 (I think it's the maps TBH), but her favourite was World at War, probably because it was both less twitchy and harder to be good at.

The point is each game, more or less, have a different pace to it, even if the modes have stayed fairly similar over the years.

@nl_skipper The main problem I'm pointing out here is that it doesn't reward skill. The maps and classes are designed so teamwork isn't rewarded, and there isn't any strategy. Skill at aiming isn't rewarded much, since the time to kill is so low. The only thing that's rewarded is playing enough to memorize the maps, unlocking better guns, and camping. None of which require skill. All of those are just a form of grinding.

@zeldafan195: If there were rewards for skill, everyone who plays it would have left because then it's heavily curved only to benefit the best of the best. Never is that a fun system to implement, which is why there are specific ranked and unranked servers. You may not like it, but that's just too bad because it's what most people want.
