Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's exosuit, which gives players a range of superhuman abilities and is arguably the game's most dramatic change to the franchise's formula, was a response to fans calling for innovation in the series. That's according to Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, who says in GameSpot's latest Aim Down Sights video (produced in partnership with Activision), that not everyone was on board with this major change, although almost everyone came around in the end.
"We had heard loud and clear from fans that they wanted change, they wanted innovation; that we needed to bring something new to Call of Duty," Condrey says about Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. "And change is scary sometimes, right? I can't say everybody thought it was the right idea on day one, but I'm pretty sure most people think it's the right idea today."
Overall, Condrey described Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare as a "huge evolution" over past games in the series. He also says that when development on the game began around 2011, the idea of an exosuit was not very prevalent in the public consciousness. But this has since changed, and the exosuit is more relevant today than ever before, Condrey says.
"Three years ago, the exo wasn't in the mind's eye of the public like it is today," he says. "You think about it now; it's films like Elysium and Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion; and you see it all over the news of the military adopting it and healthcare. So everyone's talking about the exo. But three years ago, it was a big step."
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches November 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Sledgehammer Games confirmed this week that there will be no Wii U version.
