Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare could show up on House of Cards

The game Kevin Spacey stars in could be played by his character on the Netflix series.

Frank Underwood, the politician played by Kevin Spacey on the Netflix series House of Cards, has an enthusiasm for gaming, playing on his PlayStation 3 and expressing interest in buying a PlayStation Vita during the show's first season. As soon as he was announced as the star of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, jokes were made about Underwood playing Advanced Warfare on the show--a prospect that developer Sledgehammer Games hopes to actually make happen.

Speaking with Game Informer, Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey said he's already pursued the idea of getting the game on the upcoming season of House of Cards. "I exchanged an email with his [producing partner Dana Brunetti] this week, saying, 'Hey, what would it take to have Frank Underwood playing Advanced Warfare in season three of House of Cards?'" he said.

According to Condrey, the reaction was positive. "They're like, 'Wow, that's awesome.' And we're like, ‘That's awesome!' Because imagine bringing fans full circle there to see that," he said. "I mean how awesome would that be? Wouldn't it just be the craziest thing ever just to go like, ‘Hollywood meets Silicon Valley meets Hollywood.' If we can pull that off."

Sledgehammer's other co-founder, Glen Schofield, mentioned the possibility of Spacey's character in Advanced Warfare mentioning the name of the show, although it's unclear if he was serious about that. He added that Spacey himself--who has served as an executive producer on House of Cards--had mentioned the possibility of playing the game on the show, saying, "I guess I’m going to have to play this game on House of Cards."

Advanced Warfare was announced last week and is being developed by Sledgehammer for release this November on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. (A different studio is handling the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.) The story centers around the role of private military corporations in the year 2054, with Spacey playing the role of Jonathon Irons, the CEO of a PMC called Atlas Corporation.

Given his character has played COD on the show before I don't really mind. At least they wouldn't be shoe-horning it in.

I didn't know video games could be featured positively in a show about politics. Nice.

<< LINK REMOVED >> But he's a bad person who does bad things, like playing video games :P.

That would actually be comical. I already love the segments when he's playing PS3. It would be hilarious if he's playing the game and says something like, "This game is amazing, but the villain is an asshole."

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't watch House of Cards, is it too serious to make a joke like that?

Avatar image for Zombrex

It's a really serious show but when he speaks to the audience he says some funny things.

Avatar image for TehUndeadHorror

That's actually pretty funny. He's always playing some random shooter on the show.

What if the ending of Advanced Warfare is Frank Underwood in House of Cards taking his Oculus Rift off and saying, "oh well. One can still dream." [fin]

Roll the credits.

I haven't seen the show, but what kind of 50 year old politician plays video games?

Avatar image for Zombrex

<< LINK REMOVED >> On the show his character plays PS3 in order to relax, especially since his character was trying to quit smoking.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you ever meet people beyond your parents and the other 12 year olds, you might be surprised.

fascinating, could you tell us what brand of orange juice will be involved in the next season

Avatar image for nousername66

I watched season 1 and there's an episode of him playing Killzone 3

Avatar image for liquidbutter

Pretty sure he doesn't play video games on House of Cards anymore. He stopped in season 2, and took up model building as a new hobby.

This is possible the worst product placement since Bond traded in his Aston for a BMW :(

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you watched the show, you'd know his character in House of Cards (since the 1st or 2nd episode) plays CoD from time to time.

I love Kevin Spacey's work, and I love House of Cards -- I even loved that trailer.

...but I'm not coming back to Call of Duty. Black Ops 1 was enough for me.

The PS Vita scene is the worst scene in House of Cards. I actually cringed, and the rest of the show is pretty great. As long as it doesn't end up too important of a cameo, whatever. They could use the sponsor money.

Avatar image for wizardjenkins

Wasn't Spacey playing CoD on the show once?

I know he had a Vita, lel

Avatar image for nousername66

There's an episode of him playing Killzone 3, can't remember him playing any COD game, not in season 1 anyways.

Avatar image for whatsazerg

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think his character has played CoD 2 or 3 times, in the episodes that I've seen so far... but I'm not all caught up yet, so... possibly more.
