Call of Duty 4 tops BAFTA nominees

Modern Warfare nets seven nods in extended Brit game awards; GTAIV, Fable II, Little Big Planet.

Some 15 months after the debut of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, one might think it was done competing for Game of the Year awards. One would be wrong, however, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts today announced the gaming nominees for its (mostly) annual BAFTA awards, and Modern Warfare led all comers with nominations in seven categories, including Best Game.

More proof that Modern Warfare isn't ancient history.
More proof that Modern Warfare isn't ancient history.

The latest BAFTA game awards were doled out in October of 2007, with publishers needing to submit eligible games in completed form by early September. Last year, the British Academy opted to delay the awards (and the submission cutoff), ensuring that games competing on shelves in the same holiday season would also be competing in the same awards season. But along with that delay comes a one-time extra-large pool of candidates, with a 2007 release like Modern Warfare competing against games like Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, which launched in December 2008.

Modern Warfare was by no means the only 2007 game to nab honors, nor the only one to pick up multiple nominations. Assassin's Creed was named in four categories, while Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy each received three nods. As for the representatives of 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV garnered six nominations, Fable II and Little Big Planet scored five each, and Dead Space and Fallout 3 could soon need shelf space for an extra four awards each.

The winners will be announced March 10 in a cermony at the London Hilton on Park Lane. One guaranteed honoree that night is Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, who has been confirmed as the recipient of this year's Fellowship accolade.

The full list of categories and nominees follows.

This is a joke. Call of Duty should not be here at all, it's in almost every category possible. Metal Gear should be for GOTY, and Assassin's Creed...

@TheUnf0rgiven If I see a list that is full of FPS, then I'd say thats biased. MGS 4 is a good game but it's not the best.

Rizer, these are nominations, they are in alphabetical order, not in order of greatness, so fable 2 didn't beat Mass Effect in storyline (unless it wins, lol), so calm down.

CoD 4 artistic achivement? I'm not normally one to cry "Conspiracy!", but really, that game has been nominated in far too many catagories for what it's worth. How about Valkyria Chornicles or Prince of Persia? How can CoD 4 deserve it more than either of thosse? It's a modern warfare game running on a basic FPS engine. I bet it wins GotY, and I bet it's been paid off.

Agreed Noah. Some people, especially on multiplayer are complete pillocks. I got kicked off a server in left 4 dead once just because I was clearing zombies from the doorway when we were still locked in the saferoom, and yet everyone does that. But they decided to call me a n00b and kick me. It's the same with clans, they really annoy me. Elitist dipsticks.

I'm probably going to sound really old now, but WTF are nade spammer and a nubetuber? I know what a 'noob' is, and I've got to say it's the most pathetic and offensively American thing I've ever heard anyone say. Every single person that buys a game and starts to play is technically a 'noob', everyone was new to each game at some point, so why do more experienced players use it as a cuss? You may now swear and call me a 'noob' to your hearts content.

Only just got into COD4, don't normally like FPS's, but this game changed my mind in a big way. So addicted right now and it so deserves the awards. All the other games in all the lists are good examples of their genres, but only COD4 excels at everything it set out to achieve, and meateater79 is right, like GTA3 was, COD4 will be the standard all others like it will have to live up to. Assassins Creed deserves the story gong, though. Playing the story in COD4 was awesome, but on paper it's lacking. Not too sure if GTA IV deserves all this praise, though. Same with Fable 2. Was a little disappointed by them both.

I'm an xbox fan-boy, I've heard MGS4's ups and few downs and if majority of gaming websites give it 10/10's or 9/10's that should at least be in nominee for GOTY. If I knew what technical achievement was metalgear-solid I might add it for that one but it doesn't matter if it was or wasn't added for story and character, Mass Effect would've had that in the bag either way.

Everyone has an opinion and if you look around there are so many personal game of the year awards. To me everyone has their own GOTY that fits their individual taste and likes in their gaming style. It's satisfying to see so many games I own listed in the various categories to receive some kind of award. It renews my faith in picking a good game. but then, there are the games that brought really full time enjoyment that are not even listed and you wonder why. Like the Academy Awards these awards are for the folks in the industry. Hope they enjoy their time in the sun.

Inconnux Posted Feb 11, 2009 7:24 am PT I enjoyed CoD4 at first, one of the few single player games I have bothered finishing. Online it turned into a nade spammer/ noobtuber fest and I got sick of it very quickly. What they need to do is fix this, or make it a serverside option. they never did and many people quit playing it. Im sure infinity ward doesn't care because they got their money. I won't bother with the next version unless these issues are dealt with. ______________________ Don't blame CoD4 because u die of tuber.u can also use tube but its obvious u can't use it very well.that is the technic that u can't master(and all the ppl who blame tuber, dont be noob la). Honestly CoD4 is a great game and it deserve to get all the awards

Habaro, why do people keep talking about Assassin's Creed's amazing story-line? I thought the overall premise was great, but honestly I saw the final plot twist coming from the third assassination. And the whole treasure thing, could they make it anymore obvious what the scientists were after? I thought the story was still good, but it does not deserve so much praise.

Inconnux, apparently you're in the vast, vast minority on this issue. Because as I recall CoD 4 was constantly #1 on LIVE until WaW came out--even now it has yet to fall beyond #4. I think it's justice that CoD 4 is up for seven awards and WaW is up for zero.

call of duty 4 is the best game i've played so far til i bougt the ps3 a year ago. It has graphics, gameplay and multiplayer at its finest. I enjoy it a lot, and its not surprise that more than a year is still hot. I hope that KILLZONE 2 at least will be equal or better than COD4 'cause this is my model of great game...

@ DarkCloud25 COD4 IS an excellent game, IMO the best. Now you ask why they changed back to WWII, the reason is that activision owns the licence, Treyarch and Infinity Ward are the devolepment teams. They take turns every year to make the game. COD3- Treyarch COD4 - Infinityward W@W - Treyarch. This is because the develepors have longer to make the game and it ensures a higher quality. The next installment is going to be Modern Warfare 2, from Infinty ward.
