Call of Duty 4 tops BAFTA nominees

Modern Warfare nets seven nods in extended Brit game awards; GTAIV, Fable II, Little Big Planet.

Some 15 months after the debut of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, one might think it was done competing for Game of the Year awards. One would be wrong, however, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts today announced the gaming nominees for its (mostly) annual BAFTA awards, and Modern Warfare led all comers with nominations in seven categories, including Best Game.

More proof that Modern Warfare isn't ancient history.
More proof that Modern Warfare isn't ancient history.

The latest BAFTA game awards were doled out in October of 2007, with publishers needing to submit eligible games in completed form by early September. Last year, the British Academy opted to delay the awards (and the submission cutoff), ensuring that games competing on shelves in the same holiday season would also be competing in the same awards season. But along with that delay comes a one-time extra-large pool of candidates, with a 2007 release like Modern Warfare competing against games like Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, which launched in December 2008.

Modern Warfare was by no means the only 2007 game to nab honors, nor the only one to pick up multiple nominations. Assassin's Creed was named in four categories, while Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy each received three nods. As for the representatives of 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV garnered six nominations, Fable II and Little Big Planet scored five each, and Dead Space and Fallout 3 could soon need shelf space for an extra four awards each.

The winners will be announced March 10 in a cermony at the London Hilton on Park Lane. One guaranteed honoree that night is Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, who has been confirmed as the recipient of this year's Fellowship accolade.

The full list of categories and nominees follows.

nice to see the love go to some games that truly deserve it. I am sick of all the mgs4 love - I mean I guess it does deserve some kind of award for actually being able to make the entire mgs storyline make some sort of sence, but that would be about it.

Finally good to see an awards show that didn't kiss the backside of MGS4 too much.... I know a lot of people liked it, but I just didn't. Nice to see there are others out there who didn't like it too.... Good to see LBP in a good number of nominations too - it's a great game.

Makhdoom82 Posted Feb 10, 2009 11:55 pm MT COD4 is an excellent game set in modern world. What amazes me is that developers switched back to WW2 franchise with world at war ?!! How come a well deserved expansion never came for COD4 ??? ___________ Infinity Ward made CoD: MW. Treyarch (sp?) Made CoD: WaW. Completely different developers. Also CoD: MW 2 has been confirmed (pretty sure most of you know).

anyone else noticed lack of MGS4 love from movie folks? first WGA and now BAFTA. Am sure it has something to do with a game treading on the mainucred toes of movies.

Game of the Year awards should only involve games released in the year the awards are for. It just makes sense.

Dead Space definately deserves best Use of Audio. The voice acting was incredible and the environmental sounds did a great job of capturing the mood of a space horror game.

@ TrainReks- I think MGS4 has earned enough rewards. Its time some others got them. @ moose-R2 does not suffer any lag. all i will say is out of the many times i have played it has freezed once. So i also think it should have been on best multiplayer.

what a joke. Metal Gear Solid 4 wasnt even nominated for best game ? Are you going to tell me that Fable II and Fallout 3 are better games? Whatever. The only reason COD4 is on there is because you get to play British special forces.

@ratavaquera Since when do you need 60-players to make multiplayer "special"? I guess in your terms something special must be a super annoying lag fest then.
