Call of Duty 4 Remaster: You Must Have Infinite Warfare Disc Inserted to Play for Physical Copies

Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered come out in November.

[UPDATE] Activision has updated the Modern Warfare Remastered FAQ to more clearly explain that you will indeed need to have Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's physical disc inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered. This only applies to people who buy Infinite Warfare on a physical disc.

Here is the new language, as written by Activision:

PlayStation 4

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a full game digital download that will be included in the Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition and Legacy Pro Edition on PlayStation 4. The digital download is redeemed via a voucher code on an insert in the box. The Infinite Warfare game disc must be inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered. Internet connection is required.

Xbox One

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is included on the Infinite Warfare Xbox One disc (no voucher code required) in the Legacy Edition and Legacy Pro Edition of Infinite Warfare. Before Modern Warfare Remastered can be played, an additional download is required. The game disc must be inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered. Internet connection is required.

Steam

  • A Steam key will be provided in the Legacy Edition of Infinite Warfare that will provide access to both Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered. Internet connection is required.

The original story is below.

What could be a key detail about how you'll be able to play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's remastered version has come to light.

As Call of Duty fansite Charlie Intel spotted, Modern Warfare Remastered's website has been updated with a line of text that suggests you may need the Call of Duty Infinite Warfare disc inserted to play the game. As announced previously, Modern Warfare Remastered is a digital-only game that is available only through Infinite Warfare's premium editions, which start at $80.

No Caption Provided

Here is the line of text in question: "Modern Warfare Remastered is a full game download (game disc must be inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered). Internet connection required."

Activision also directs people to this FAQ page, but it doesn't have more details about the "game disc must be inserted" part.

If you're buying Infinite Warfare digitally, this does not apply to you since you won't have a disc, Charlie Intel reported.

One reason why Activision may require you to insert the Infinite Warfare disc to play Modern Warfare Remastered is that it would eliminate the ability for people to sell their copy of the game and continue to be able to play Modern Warfare Remastered.

Activision has not said if Modern Warfare Remastered will ever be sold on its own, though it also hasn't ruled it out. GameSpot has followed up with Activision in an attempt to get more details.

Activision's Raven Software is working on Modern Warfare Remastered, while Infinity Ward, another Activision-owned studio, is building Infinite Warfare. The game arrives on November 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can play Modern Warfare Remastered's campaign on PS4 30 days early if you preorder one of the game's premium versions.

A new trailer for Modern Warfare Remastered was released this week--and it looked great.

A friend let me download remastered from his psn account and just gifted me a Infinite Warfare digital download voucher. I'm hoping this will work but I have a slight feeling I'm going to get fisted with "Please insert Infinite Warfare disc" hahahahaha. I'll post an update...

Infinity Ward doesn't want 60 percent of their discs to end up in the used section of gamestop or something.

Damn even if you bought IW used. You won't be able to get the Remaster. So that tells me one or two things. Either you have to buy the bundled version, or Activision will sell this remaster game standalone some time later. Save your money people. Better games come out this month. Better shooters that is.

I'll just boycott it and revisit the xbox 360 version of COD 4 if I feel like it.

I wish everyone would do the same as me.

These companies don't deserve our business.

What I find most strange is that you need to download Modern Warfare Remastered for the PS4 version but not on the Xbox One version. Why is that?

@Archangel3371: When the "Dead Island" remaster two-fer came out with both games on the Xbox One disc but only one on the PS4 disc, with the other being a download, didn't some speculate the PS4 had trouble with multiple titles on a single disc?

@zmanbarzel: Yeah I remember that game as well. I guess it is the case that the PS4 just has trouble with multiple games on a disk.

Lucky for me I got both in the Legacy Edition for around $50 at my go-to cd key store. Saved over $30, that is a perfect example of when buying digital is ok, because there is a substantial savings there. Knowing that I will be stuck with those titles for the rest of my life and can never share them, give them away, trade or sell them, buying digital MUST come with a substantial discount. Only a complete moron would buy digital at full price.

@howthegodzkill: Yh, same here. I pre-ordered Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Digital Legacy Edition for PC, from CDkeys a few weeks back and only paid £37.99 and it should have cost 69.99

So i saved about 40 to 41% off the total.

Internet Connection Required - this is exactly the DRM bullshit that everyone was up in arms about when Microsoft said they were going to make this mandatory before the launch of the X1 (and one of the contributing factors to the console sales disparity, I said one of the factors). Looks like publishers have brought it back on all platforms which sucks. If I pay $80 for something, I should own it, be able to sell the disc and still be able to play the download only should-be standalone game, in this case COD4 Remaster.

Both Activision and Infinity ward will not be seeing return business from me , i loved CoD 4 (was my first CoD i ever played) but this is a douchey move to try and force people to buy Infinite Warfare in order to play CoD 4 remastered ,from the Trailer of Infinite Warfare it looks like they reskinned CoD Ghost assets and added few new modes , sadly i think the only reason people are hyped for this game isnt because of this game but the CoD 4 Remastered !!! with that said I would advise everyone to buy CoD 4 on Steam at a low price and play that cause it does have mod support and you can host your own servers !!!!

Sadly im afraid the Infinite Warfare Disc will give my XBO or PS4 an STD or something !!!

@adkcrazox: No he's not. With Gears 4, BF1 and TITANFALL 2 coming this month. Who in their right mind would pay for a dusty old remaster you can't truly own and waste money on Blacks Ops 3.5 dlc named IW. Waste of money is waste of money.

What about a straight up digital download? Can say two people who make the other Friends Xbox their home Xbox, both have the game from the one purchase?

Thing is, you know this will get leaked on pirate sites day one. So as per usual, all they're really doing is sticking a middle finger up to paying customers by restricting it to the legacy edition.

@pongley: Nah it will likely have Denuvo protection which is taking CPY around 2 weeks to crack per title. And in any case, you won't be able to play it online without a legit copy.

@mdinger: Activision have never used Denuvo on any of their games. Only EA, Squeenix and Warner Brothers do.

@pongley: Did not know that. You are right: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denuvo

So we got Deep Silver, EA, Bethesda (just DOOM so far), Konami, Square Enix, Warner Bros., Crytech (also just the one game) and Ubisoft. Indeed, that is just about EVERY major publisher, except Activision... so I'm guessing they'll be jumping on Denuvo bandwagon, quite possibly with CoD.

@legendaryh1tman: So do a lot of games, they still get cracked. Assassin's Creed 2 was cracked on the day of release.

@pongley: Really? I have a vague recollection that Ass Creed 2 took many weeks to crack. Didn't it initially need some sort of complex server emulation thing for Ubisoft's Uplay, since it required always on internet to even play? Googling...

http://www.tweakguides.com/AC2_1.html

Yeah, see it took a whole month to get a properly working crack for that one.

@pongley: Why are we even talking about this? Can't stand the thought of thieves online ripping people off downloading illegal content. But I suppose you are right. If anything I guess Activision will deserve this.

Yes, activision sucks big time for this, but I'm kinda surprised how many seem to be more interested in the remaster than infinite warfare...
