Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered Won't Be Sold on Its Own

It's only included with premium versions of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

If you were thinking you might skip this year's new Call of Duty game, Infinite Warfare, and simply play the remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, think again. The newly announced remaster will only be available in a bundle with certain versions of Infinite Warfare--you can't buy it on its own.

That's according to a new FAQ posted by Activision about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, as it's called. Your only way of getting your hands on it will be by purchasing the Legacy, Legacy Pro, or Digital Deluxe edition of Infinite Warfare.

These are the three premium versions of the game that will be available, and they're priced accordingly. That means you'll be paying at least an extra $20 to secure a copy of Modern Warfare Remastered.

Here's what each of those three versions costs and includes:

  • Legacy Edition/Digital Legacy Edition ($80): Includes both Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
  • Digital Deluxe Edition ($100): Includes Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and Season Pass
  • Legacy Pro Edition ($120): Includes Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Season Pass, collectible steelbook, official game soundtrack and additional digital items

Modern Warfare Remastered consists of the full Modern Warfare campaign--complete with new and improved graphics--and a portion of its multiplayer mode. Specifically, 10 "fan favorite" maps from the game will be included, such as Crash, Backlot, and Crossfire. The other seven maps will be announced "soon."

The remaster is available as a digital game for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. This leaves open the possibility that you could purchase one of the physical versions of Infinite Warfare and then sell it after redeeming the key for Modern Warfare. However, we don't yet know if Activision intends to prevent this from happening by forcing players to access Modern Warfare through Infinite Warfare.

Modern Warfare Remastered, which is being developed by Raven Software, was announced today at the end of the trailer above, the majority of which reveals Infinite Warfare. For more on that game, head to our recap of everything we know so far.

The only thing cool about call of duty are the advertising videos. Call of duty died 3 or 4 call of duties ago

They probably release it down the line as standalone to screw over the people who spent $80+ and to maximize profits. **** you activision. I want CoD 4, but I won't pay $80 to play a remastered version with less content than the 360 version. Most obvious cash grab ever.

The desperate attempt at trying to save the image of Call of Duty. Activision knows people are starting to get bored of their cash cow.

Did someone what a remastered version? I don't remember saying that, but what I remember is that everyone was asking for a new WW2 or a new MW similar to MW/MW2.

Why does PC need a "remastered" version? You can still play it, and it still looks good. Plus, won't people playing the remastered version cut into the player base of the new game? Sounds stupid to me.

@kenundrum7: Because it's Activision, and the remasters are a common and accepted (very stupid at that matter) practice in consoles. A lot of people are excited to play the same game they played back in 2007 because it looks a bit prettier, even if they have to pay $80 or more for it.

Oh goodie. We get to pay another $80 for a yearly rehash AND a remaster without the DLC packs?

@RabidBurp: Also limited to 10 MP maps. (don't even remember if those were all the maps available without the DLC on COD4)

I think it's hilarious how almost all remasters include additional content, yet for COD4 they're actually taking content away.

Nahh, they will rake in the preorders, then a little while after the game is released they will release the remaster as a standalone, probably with some PR announcement about giving their loyal customer base what they want.

@jedediahpelland: this is exactly what I think. They'll rob the individuals during the pre order then release the remaster as a standalone

If its not a standalone then all know there won't be a multiplayer for it.

Single player PC games have always been easy to pirate, thanks for the free gift Crapdavision!

I'm calling bullcrap on this. Sure, that may be the only way to get it initially but I can guarantee it'll be available as a standalone download somewhere down the line.

With so many people ordering the $80 version and immediately trading in the new game and keeping the code for MW, can you imagine what the day one trade-in value at GameStop will be? I'm guessing around $4.

The marketing trick seems obvious, first they heavily advertise the new game with this bundle, and later down the road they release a standalone version of the remaster. I find hard to believe otherwise, they wouldn't spend their time=money to remaster the game for just the bundle. But of course they will sure take their time before annoucing as a separate game.

I doubt this very much. It would be stupid. I (and I'm sure I'm not alone) look at a new COD and I go "meh" but I'm game for a remastered COD 4. The sad thing is that I bet the pc version will still end up on torrent sites basically making that the only way to play COD4 remastered for those not interested in the new COD.

Wondering if CoD4 Remastered will have Prestige. The original game lacks it... No one knows why. That is weird. Huh?

@Prats1993: I think you've missed the point entirely. A lot of people, myself included, just want the remaster. A lot don't want to have to buy the new one just to play the old one.

@tony56723: it's not about paying the additional $20. A lot of people aren't interested in the newer versions of cod. A lot of people wanted to play the older cods on backwards-compatibility, but the problem with the 360 versions are the amount of hackers currently in the game.

@tony56723: played the 360 version and it's hacked to hell. People jumping 30 feet in the air, walking through walls. I do not want to play the new cod, no interest in it at all but I'm all for playing the remastered COD 4. Sell it separate and I'm sold

@Prats1993: Its pretty obvious the biggest reason people are bothered is that many would have wanted the remastered COD:MW without having to go anywhere near the dross they now put out there.

@Prats1993: Oh. You mean the decade old game on practically dead last gen consoles with dead multiplayer (even on PC)? There's a reason people WERE excited for the remaster. It looks better. Runs better. Will have people actually playing it. WERE is the key word there. Many people don't want to pay $80 for the remaster and even fewer people want to pay $80 for Infinite Warfare.

@tony56723:

No he just means that as a business, Activision can try to sell you whatever they feel like in what ever manner they choose.

There's enough people buying cod and seasons passes every year that they are pretty much printing money so they basically feel they can do whatever the f**** they want

Of course, you as the consumer are totally free to vote with your wallet

@tony56723: Think I will just buy it to get the remastered and then sell the new game on eBay for $55-60. I would have paid $25-30 for the remastered anyway. I bet a lot of people end up doing this.
