Now Playing: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Release Date And Campaign Details - GS News Update

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, 2019's entry into the long-running franchise, is making some significant changes to the Call of Duty formula by reimagining of Infinity Ward's 2007 classic. The game does not include Zombies but will feature "continuity and consistency" across all its game modes, meaning character progression will carry over between them and guns will feel the same in multiplayer as in single-player. Beyond that, there are changes coming that should be good news for all fans who pick up the game when it releases on October 25--specifically, those who don't want to pay for new maps but do want to play with those on different platforms.

Infinity Ward and Activision shared the welcome news in a press release that dropped alongside its first Modern Warfare trailer, which you can see below. Cross-play will be available across PC, PS4, and Xbox One, letting players on any platform jump into a match with those on another system. That's still fairly uncommon, with Sony permitting few games to be playable across PS4 and Xbox One.

The other surprising bit of news is that Modern Warfare will not have the traditional "season pass," which in the past players were required to buy in order to receive new maps over the course of the year after a Call of Duty game's release. Instead, post-release maps and events for Modern Warfare will be free to all players, mimicking a shift we've seen many competing games make.

Both features should go a long way to helping keep the Call of Duty player base together, without limiting them to only playing with people on the same platform and who own the same maps that they do. In general, there should be a whole lot more people to play against. It may also make the Call of Duty esports scene a little more welcoming, as players will be able to compete on their preferred platforms.

One thing that is not changing is that it will have timed exclusive content on PS4. We don't know all the details at this point, but like last year's Black Ops 4, the window will be only seven days, which is much shorter than the 30-day window CoD's exclusivity used to be.

Infinity Ward showed off Modern Warfare to journalists in the week before announcing the game, giving a sense of the single-player campaign and the technology that's going into the game. Along with reimagining the story, Infinity Ward said it's working to make Modern Warfare "more relevant" to the current world, and drew inspiration for the game's story from real-world conflicts and documentaries about them, as well as recent Hollywood movies.

Crossplay aside, need to see more, a one minute and some change trailer is not enough.

We"ll see at E3.

I loath multiplayer in much the same way I loathe babysitting 16 adolescents in an amusement park....havent played a MP shooter since the first Rainbow Six on dial-up (1998)....but isn't the mouse/keyboard control scheme still insanely better than the consoles? Or has that changed? Do consoles use auto-aim or something to compensate?

Honest question - just curious.

so way back when it was ""we want cross play""

now it's ""nope- console v pc -nope""

So does "no season pass" mean only 1 new map every 6 months like BFV's "no premium" experiment that stinks immensely?

Avatar image for Shantmaster_K

Nice to see. Competing with BF.

I wonder if there'll be an option to not play cross-play. I can just see so many console players being destroyed in this, myself included.

Free maps? numbers must be getting really low with fortnite and Apex taking players away.

I'm guessing they will have a form of battle pass though

Also guessing that they are showing this now as Sony isn't at E3 and PS4 still had timed exclusive maps, or MS told them to jog on.

Oh man, the players of the console with best games vs the ones with the best controller and most powerful console vs the unbeatable M+K control scheme. I can't wait to see how each of them trash the others around via mic in a match.

Proof that these publishers are just greedy because they can afford to not have to charge for season passses. Call of duty is dying and now they're been humble haha

Ps I'm a bit sceptical of playing against the cheating/hacking PC community in cross-play.

Are we sure that Xbox One and PS4 players are going to be able to play with each other? I thought their wording was kind of ambiguous. I'm expecting a Rocket League-type situation.

Unless they go the Shadowrun route (Vista players could play against Xbox 360) and tune the aiming on PC (which I doubt they will considering the rage from PC gamers that can come from that), console players are gonna get their asses kicked

No season pass = MTs through the roof

Avatar image for balugha

COD just achieved world peace through warfare.

Console AND PC cross-play?!? Oh dear, the rage in that community will be legendary! It must be documented.

can't wait i just hope its good :p

Cross-play between PC and console? That's a big nope from this console user. I've played games on both platforms. PC users win. There is just no competition for how fast they can zero in a headshot with a mouse. The only way I can see this working is with heavy aim-assist for consoles or some other handicap for PC. Otherwise it'd be a bloodbath. That's not to mention introducing console users to aimbots and other types of hacks mainly only possible via PC.

Avatar image for santinegrete

@TrialMonkey: yeah that thing is kinda worrying. But maybe they'll make console and mouse work on consoles too. It depends on the game. Metro Exodus did that on Xbox One.

Avatar image for 129260

@TrialMonkey: It will have the option to disable cross play like most games that have cross play now I would imagine.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@TrialMonkey: So use a mouse like a normal person.

Avatar image for pharoe777

@TrialMonkey: I completely agree with you.... That's a big NO from me.

Avatar image for Barighm

@TrialMonkey: I've never seen that. Played a few games on PC and they weren't much better than anyone else. Better aim in general, sure, but the best players didn't perform much differently than the best console players, and they were worse at everything beyond aiming.

You're right about the cheating though. SO MANY cheaters on PC. Like every third game I played there would be some kind of cheater.

Avatar image for Richardthe3rd

@Barighm: aim is a pretty important factor. To make this work, IW will have to give console players some kind of handicap.

I'm sure consoles will get generous aim assist stuff like they always do to compensate, but theres a really, really good reason players in OWL dont use controllers.
