Buy Squids Odyssey on 3DS, Get It on Wii U Free -- Is Nintendo Cross-Buy Coming?

The first title to offer cross-buy on Nintendo systems is the upcoming strategy RPG Squids Odyssey.

Update: In a statement to Siliconera, a representative of Squids Odysseys developer The Game Bakers revealed that cross-buy for the game will not be coming to the United States. When asked if the promotion would ever come overseas, the representative responded that Nintendo of America "could not support this operation yet."

"We really like this promotion and wished to make it happen for all gamers," the developer continued, "but [Nintendo of America] could not support this kind of promotion."

It looks like it will still be some time before Nintendo cross-buy is a reality for Americans.

Original Story:

For many months now, owners of PlayStation devices have enjoyed the Cross-Buy program that Sony started to incentivize game purchases. For compatible titles, you can buy the game once on a PlayStation 4 and receive a copy for free on the PlayStation 3 and Vita.

With games releasing more frequently on both the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS, many people expected that a similar program would come to the systems. But until now, Nintendo had only offered discounts for people who wanted to buy both games.

Squids Odyssey is now the first game to offer a free Wii U copy for those who purchase the 3DS version. At the moment, this is limited to the European eShop, and it only works when you buy the 3DS version first. But this is a sign that Nintendo might be inspired by Sony's Cross-Buy program and could potentially allow it with more games in the future.

Nintendo has not said anything about potential discounts or cross-buy for upcoming games such as Super Smash Bros. that are launching for both systems.

Do you think that Nintendo will begin more extensive cross-buy promotions? Let us know in the comments!

@metallinatus if you buy a Game on Steam you can use it on your console? I was unaware Valve had more then one platform. PC is PC regardless of your Brand having a Steam account is not the same as Cross buy as the game is the same no matter what platform its on.

@Deadlysyns87 @Bellum_Sacrum PSV, PS3, PS4 work with your PSN account and 360, X1 work with your Microsoft account. It's pretty much the same thing. Nintendo, although starting to shift to accounts, still has games tied to a system.

The point is, Steam did kind of invent it first. If not Steam, Apple and Android sure as hell did way before Sony even thought of it.

You can use your iTunes account on both your iPad and iPhone and redownload whatever you purchased on the two. Same goes for if you have a Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Tab 3.

Way to be late to the party, and underfeatured.

oh nintendo.

I would hope they do this for all games in the future though for any owners' sake.

I can see this becoming a thing for smaller eShop titles like this one, but not for bigger releases like Smash Bros, for example. The two versions are way too different for that.

It's kind of weird that it only works if you buy it on 3DS first and is only for Europe. Hopefully, some day, Nintendo will get its online act together and get all the pieces in place to do this right every time. At least it's a baby step in the right direction though.

This is great. I hope it comes to North America. I love cross buy on Sony's platforms. It is one of the reasons Sony is the primary platform I purchase games on. If Nintendo started doing it, I may purchase more cross platform games on Nintendo's system.

Should include that this cross buy is currently only available in the EU in the title.

Not sure about the concept (lolcopyingSony) but I wouldn't want digital games on 3DS anyway. I have a regular and an XL and don't like Nintendo's policy of only having one Mii/NNID per 3DS so I can't easily swap the games on either handhelds that I both own gatdangit.

Smash Bros has 2 different versions. One has been confirmed to have an exclusive mode and stages. plus, it's $20 cheaper than the other version which will most definitely have exclusive features, stages, modes too.

Making cross buy for that wouldn't make much sense.

What is all this talk of Nintendo copying Sony? Cross Buy is something all 3 of the companies should do. (Except Microsoft doesn't have a handheld console.) Nintendo is the one with the TON of virtual console games.

Cross Buy can be used better for Nintendo than Sony.

<< LINK REMOVED >> if someone does something first, and someone else does that thing later, people will say the latter copied the former. and MS could do something like that with windows phones, maybe then some people would buy that crap :P

giving away an Eshop game to anyone who bought the hard copy is an awesome idea, I doubt they will do this for smash bros, but I will definitely keep my hopes up for them doing this with other games

Hey Gamepot stop leading everyone on. This offer is only being done in Europe and not everywhere else. You should at least put it in the title

@sakaixx In what way is MS "ripping off" cross buy? They don't have a handheld platform, and if you have an xbox one, why would you want the game on a 360? You might be misunderstanding the point of cross-buy.

Cross-buy solely benefits gamers. Why on earth would you want Sony to patent cross-buy therefore screwing over all gamers on other platforms? I don't even think you CAN patent something like that.
