Bungie Thinking About Lord of the Rings-Sized Narrative for Destiny, Activision Says

Bungie has a ten-year plan in place for Destiny, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg says.

J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy tome Lord of the Rings is regarded as one of the deepest and most finely crafted fantasies ever written. Achieving a similar level of depth and breadth is a goal that Bungie has in mind for its soon-to-be-released shooter, Destiny, according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. Speaking with Wired as part of a fascinating feature about Bungie's origins and its Halo history, Hirshberg says Bungie has a ten-year plan in mind for Destiny, which begins with the game's release on September 9.

"I think a lot of franchises get built game-to-game, or month-to-month--the moment really determines the momentum of the franchise," he said. "Bungie aren't just thinking about the content that goes on the first disc; they're thinking about a ten-year story. They're thinking about a Lord of the Rings-sized narrative. How do you build a lasting franchise? How do you design something that, from day one, is built to last?"

This is actually not the first time Destiny has been mentioned in comparison to Lord of the Rings by someone working on the game. Last year, Bungie COO Pete Parsons said Destiny has the potential to surpass the cultural impact of Halo and sit on people's shelves alongside popular works like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Star Wars.

In 2010, Bungie signed a 10-year, exclusive publishing deal with Activision for a new franchise that we now know is Destiny.

Destiny's launch next week is just the beginning for the game, Bungie says. The developer has extensive post-release plans for the game, which include at least two main expansions, the first of which is called The Dark Below. That expansion launches in December.

GameSpot will have more on Destiny next week. For now, check out our previous coverage.

We'll see how the game goes first before thinking about ten years from now. I never tend to buy DLC, not even for games like Borderlands so Destiny is going to have to be damn good to break my trend. Buying it cheaper in the PS4 bundle helps though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I see what you're saying but this isn't like Borderlands. Borderlands tacks on additional DLC by tying it to the exploits of the existing NPC's most of the time. Destiny has been built from the beginning to be more like an MMO, though not quite, and everyone who spends a decent amount of time with any MMO knows that they can fall flat without expansions to breathe new life into them from time to time. You can make the stand against getting expansions/DLC, but do know that you might be putting the whole "Destiny experience" in an early grave by doing so. Hopefully the game hooks you and you enjoy it. Me personally, I'm not in it so much for the story as I am just for the co-op tackling, but most people that I will be playing with already have the pass so that leaves me in a "keep up or get left" position.

That's hilarious...zero story in what they showed in the demo, and they have the balls to compare it their goal to LOTR? Try at least getting to fantasy knock off-book level first.

You mean like a Titanfall? :D

In reality, it likely wouldn't even be the game's fault. The hype surrounding this game has gone overboard and is still not stopping. It's absurd.

Sounds like they want a WoW type game that can keep going and going, and if they play their cards right, it may be possible but I'm not holding my breath. A game like Destiny on a console, without individual clans and message boards at your fingertips while you play and so forth, I don't know. If it were on PC, I think they'd have a better chance with a 10 year life cycle.

If what I got out of the beta wasn't just the barest scratch of the lore surface, then they've got some serious work ahead of them, even over a 10 year period.

Not that they'll make it 10 years if communication and raid matchmaking remains as is, but the story is so shallow so far that they went so far as to pay Bill Nighy to tell the player about all the things he isn't going to bother going telling the player about the game's lore.

Unless, by 'Lord of the Rings', they mean the 'whole lot of silent walking' thing then yeah, we're on the same page.

Can we please stop with all the "news stories" about Destiny that are basically just marketing gibberish? This "story" is basically just a lame free ad. Seriously, this is not news.

Holy smokes, Bungie! That's not a hype train, that's a big f*cking hype atomic space rocket! Please stop, it's getting ridiculous.

I liked the beta when I played it and I'm going to buy it on Tuesday when it's released. What I don't like is this blowing smoke up our a$$, marketing fluff bs they announce every 20 minutes.

Spare us the theatrics, the game is as bro shooter as it gets. Unless a physical copy of the game can bring Tolkien back from the dead, just make sure the game doesn't break on September 9th.

Okay GS, seriously, this is approaching Titanfall levels of fluffy BS "news" pieces. It's World of BorderHalo. I'm sure that interests many people, but don't act like this is going to be the second coming (or maybe third coming, since Titanfall was the second, right? Right?) of games.

First Sledgehammer games was talking about trying to emulate Game of Thrones, now Bungie is trying to compare themselves to Lord of the Rings. This is ridiculous. These video game developers do not even have 10% of the depth of those amazing stories.

@Mr_Big_Boss Timesplitters 3 was pretty deep. Maybe not in terms of character, but their fictional timeline was pretty well thought out. Then stuff happened and we ended up with Crysis instead of anymore...

But fyi, Watch Dogs sold well enough to earn its hype. Gotta be well over 7 million units sold by now.

@sammoth All universes with big/deep lore take time to make before a product can even be seen. I was inspired by LotR/Star Wars/Doctor Who to start writing and I wanted to come up with my own universe. 7 years later I'm almost onto the final/editorial draft of my first book, and have much of the generations spanning stories down -in notes and my head- but there are still massive gaps in it all.

@The-Neon-Seal Well it's not the fact that they have lore but, what they are trying to compare it to. 40+ years of lore writing that changed many aspects of fantasy that we see in our lives. Compared to a generic Sci-Fi shooter ?

I get what you mean though. That said, I don't think there will ever be any 'defining' series or franchise anymore. It's all been done already. Middle Earth, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Alien... these were all the first, and therefore last.
