Bungie Teases Destiny's "Future Experiences" Following Activision Split

Bungie now controls its destiny.

Activision and Bungie broke up recently, with Bungie getting the rights to Destiny and announcing it will self-publish the sci-fi series going forward. Now, for the first time Destiny's franchise director, Luke Smith, is speaking out about the breakup and what it means. OK, so Smith did already respond with a fiery tweet, but this is his first full statement on the matter.

Speaking on behalf of the Destiny team, Smith started off his note by thanking Activision for supporting Bungie and the Destiny franchise over the years. Bungie and Activision locked down a 10-year publishing deal back in 2010 for a game that we now know is Destiny. The first game was released in 2014 with a sequel arriving in 2017, in addition to numerous expansions. Activision was behind Destiny and Bungie in a big way, even if the relationship isn't continuing. Smith also thanked Destiny support studios High Moon and Vicarious Visions, the latter of which continues to work on a new piece of content for Destiny 2. Smith teased that Vicarious Visions is "currently readying their Destiny swan song with content that will appear in the upcoming Season of [Redacted]."

Now Playing: Bungie Takes Destiny 2 And Parts With Activision Blizzard

After this, however, it remains to be seen if Bungie will enlist the help of other outside studios to work on new Destiny content or if Bungie will develop everything in-house. We also don't know what this move means for High Moon and Vicarious Visions; it's possible that the studios, which are owned by Activision, will shift to other projects within the publisher.

On a short-term basis, Smith said Bungie is committed to releasing all of the Annual Pass content for Destiny 2 that it promised to deliver. Smith also said Destiny 2's recent Black Armory release was a learning experience of sorts for Bungie.

"We've learned a lot from Black Armory that we will apply to future releases, most notably that we'd like the beginning experiences of content drops to be a better point of convergence for the playerbase," he said. "In Black Armory, we set the Power requirement for the first forge too high, and that meant it wasn't a great chance to jump into some new content. We want to find the line between new content that many players can play, and aspirational content for players to progress toward. We're exploring improvements to catch-up mechanics for players in upcoming seasons."

On a longer timeline, Smith said Destiny fans can rest assured that Bungie is "committed to Destiny." Now that Activision is out of the picture, Bungie controls its destiny (sorry).

"We created the universe and we hold its future entirely in our hands," Smith said. "The vast majority of the team is hard at work envisioning future experiences, enemies, and ways to play the Guardian you've been building since 2014. We're going to keep doing that."

Without the help of an established, global publishing leader like Activision, it sounds like Bungie is moving fast to determine the best way forward.

"We're thinking about what it means to be truly independent, what it means to self-publish, and crucially, what Destiny's future can now look like for our players," Smith said. "It was a busy Fall, and it is going to be a busy year. When I look ahead and think about Destiny and where it could go, I see a bright future, with roots in a memorable past. Not everything has been lost in the dark corners of time. See you soon."

On the immediate horizon for Destiny are changes to Super Abilities, and fine-tuning for weapon balance in the forthcoming 2.1.4 update. A number of changes for the Black Armory are also planned for the next update; head to Bungie's website to see a full rundown of the changes.

Destiny 3 is expected to launch in 2020, according to an analyst, who also said Bungie likely paid Activision a fee to end its publishing arrangement. In addition to more Destiny content, Bungie recently raised $100 million from Chinese internet company NetEase for non-Destiny projects, so it seems the studio is keeping itself very busy these days.

Start by making Destiny 2 a permanent MMO platform. Something Destiny I had the potential to do but failed terribly when Destiny II was announced.

I don't know why people think it is going to be any different. Luke Smith just isn't that great. This isn't the same Bungie that made Halo. Most of that talent is gone. I think expectations should be tempered but of course they won't. Great gameplay but the story and implementation of progression mechanics really take away from the game. The game needs a new director and vision.

Getting rid of the paywall behind the expansion would be a good start. Any content after the expansion should be free for all gamers, not behind a paywall. I've honestly never heard of a company putting a paywall behind an expansion before.

@oCAFFEINEo: Every game with expansion content is behind paywall -.-, if you don't pay, you don't play it, it's simple as that. On what planet have you lived where expansions or the content in it are free for all games? There are very few games that have free expansions, most prolly are mmorpg games, for example Dragon's Dogma Online.

If the expansion adds expansion content, why should it be for free for other peeps who didn't pay for it, it's not non expansion content to begin with, they mark with an icon the content in destiny to what expansion they belong to even.
For example Forsaken can drop same named loot legendary loot, but they are vastly different/random compared to the non expansion version, that you can still find if you fancy it, or you can try your luck and get lucky with a better version.

@maitkarro: A planet 12 years ago. When maps were free to people who bought the game - where expansions were real expansions not dog and pony show DLC nickle and dime BS. Where Microtransactions didn't exist because the full game was launched - not content cut to repackage for a revenue stream. It wasn't that long ago. Luke Smith destroyed Destiny - and he continues his shenanigans now.

@maitkarro: I think you're missing the point. A standalone expansion is different than content behind a season pass. Take The Witcher 3 for example, it had a season pass and brought additional expansions. Where D2 had a standalone expansion and if you want more content, you have to pay an additional $35, no thank you. My point is a standalone expansion should not contain a paywall for additional content.

They say making a game is hard as trying to solve the cosmos, but when we look up to the sky we take it for granted (because the sun allows us to see space, but every astronaut knows you can't actually see space while in space because space is a combination of many things we cannot see) just like when we play video games. To raise a family and make games is a nightmare, to apply your self towards a business entity while raising a family is insane, and that's what it takes to traverse space people who are insane.

So what can we learn from this, well sacrifices must be made, and those sacrifices can be the the consumer or a group of individuals who have family.

There is no love in war, and there is no love in game development only those willing enough to sit around, and every time you must let go of what you built but not what you started.

So look to the sky next time your out because your doing your self a service, and if you believe otherwise not to then you are the reason why some fall while the sun rises.

@nsa_protocol44: Doubt it. The exclusivity fee for a game like that would be monstrous, like in the billions. If they're gonna drop money like that, they might as well just buy the studio. Which I can see them doing.

@nsa_protocol44: I don’t see that happening. For a number of reasons. First, Bungie just broke ties with a big company like MS. Second MS has bought a ton of studios this. 5-7 studios. They don’t come cheap and most where little ones, Obsidian was big. So I think MS is now spending money on making games then buying the studios. Lastly, I think Sony will get the exclusive rights again. Keep Sony there and maybe get a little more money for the rights.

I just want Luke Smith to shut the f up. So tired of his crap. Bungie should have said here take him and we will pay triple for the Destiny rights.

@face76: Money talks, so I don't care about Bungie's history. If a big enough offer appears, they will take it. And for MS, Bungie practically created the Xbox brand. While it's hardly necessary to purchase Bungie, sometimes you have to make a move that makes you look good, and Bungie made Xbox look good.

I highly doubt Bungie will make Destiny exclusive. If they go with Sony, the exclusivity fee would be too small to be worth the effort. Not only that, they would be totally snubbing Battle.net and I don't think they want to turn up their nose to a service like that, although I can see Activision kicking them off the service.

@Barighm:It is not the same talent and they wanted out of Microsoft so I do not see them ever going back to Microsoft. Not to mention Destiny is multi-platform and I am sure Microsoft would not allow it to continue on PS if it became theirs. Its possible since they have allowed Minecraft to continue, but highly unlikely.

@creepshow2: Again, money talks. Doesn't matter what their prior history is if MS makes a big enough offer.

But you do have a point about the talent. This would be a public image play, but it's not really worth the expense if there is nobody worth having.

@Barighm: Half of Bungie is still at MS working at 343 Studios. I guess they liked having a high paying, stable, career in a state of the art building where they can do whatever they want. So having Bungie, by name mostly, isn't worth it. They split up when the left MS. Though, being MS already has a Halo dev, I'd be curious to see what Bungie came up with. But they are not the same studio they used to be. Highly overrated now.

Now they HAVE to make good content because they don't have a rich publisher to fall back on.

@Vodoo: Your comment might make more sense if Halo was thriving and Destiny was flopping hard, but the reality is Halo sucks under 343 and Destiny plays very well, it's just saddled by a few dumb design decisions. Also, still not sure why people are acting like Bungie is helpless now. They have a revenue stream equivalent to Square Enix, and now they get to pocket all of the money.

@Barighm: I never implied Bungie was helpless, and Destiny 2 did flop, for the most part, until the expansions cleaned it up a bit.

Both MS and Activision had endless budgets for Bungie and let them take as long as they wanted (until Activision wanted to rewrite a script at the last minute). Bungie can't do that anymore because now every day of development is coming out of their pocket, not a publisher that's expecting this huge experience. They're not a small or cash strapped company, but things are different now. There's probably going to be more internal pressure to get things done in a way that the company hasn't had to deal with for a very long time.

Spent far too many hours in destiny 1-2, quit when forsaken came(and secretly started on pc shhh). But I still don't get why the ghost talks instead of the guardian, in the original destiny the guardian talked. It feels so effortless and weird that they suddenly become mute. Could just aswell have the cinematics with only the ghost and let the guardian sleep in his/her ship or something.

@ember_to_flame: It's the cost, you either pay for one great voice actor being Nolan North and deal with peeps who complain about main character not talking, or pay for 6 different voice gigs, plus Nolan North (as otherwise peeps would complain why the Ghost doesn't talk) and dealt with complaints about peeps saying that's not what they would have wanted their own character to say about that situation.

Dealing with negative feedback is free, while voice actors aren't.

@ember_to_flame: Only 1 word and then a minor sentence, that's pretty much it. At first word, I was like every parent when their child says their first word finally, and then a long time later and for last time, when the Guardian spoke again, it was just a repeated confirmation -.-

I like Bungie. I think they are a good studio, but a lot of the design flaws that appeared in Destiny were Bungie's doing, not Activision's.

I really enjoyed the first Halo trilogy and the Myth games, so I hope everything works out for them going forward, and they start producing some amazing content once again.

So we're supposed to get re-engaged / excited for the core gameplay loop of "get new gun that obsoletes previous effort, grind materials for it ad nauseum" just because they're free from ATVI?

They need to stick a fork in Destiny 2 and truly come up with a new progression mechanism altogether. Something that doesn't waste people's time.

While initially something like this may sound like a bad thing for the Destiny franchise giving sole control to the team behind it may actually open them up to more freedom in terms of development.

True with Activision out of the picture the series may not have the budget or resources it once did but considering how big of a name Bungie is in the landscape of gaming I think it goes without saying that they will be alright.

I say make Destiny 3 less persistent world grind fest and more like Borderlands. Give us a more story focused campaign where you can level up, loot, and shoot through a solid, decently long campaign that ticks off all the points we want to know. When it's done, you New Game+, enemies get tougher, and the loot gets better. Repeat for a few New Game+'s, fight the odd raid boss. Instantly jump in with your friends whenever.

But whatever. That's a pipe dream. MT's are all the rage these days. Amusingly, that's how Rage 2 seems to be shaping up.
