Bungie Parts Ways With Activision Blizzard, And It's Taking Destiny

A new future for Destiny.

Bungie will assume full publishing rights of the Destiny series from Activision, the developer announced on Thursday. This will mark the end of a 10-year contract established in 2010, which saw Activision help Bungie to launch its first post-Halo project after it gained its independence from former owner Microsoft.

The process of transitioning Destiny's publishing from Activision to Bungie has already begun, according to a post on Bungie's website. There's no word on any impact on Destiny 2, and Bungie says its plans are "unchanged." The PC version--which operates using the Activision-owned Blizzard Battle.net launcher--will "still receive full support on BattleNet and we do not anticipate any disruption to our services or your gameplay experience," Blizzard confirmed.

Now Playing: Bungie Takes Destiny 2 And Parts With Activision Blizzard

In a statement, Activision said, "Today, we're announcing plans for Bungie to assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise. Going forward, Bungie will own and develop the franchise, and Activision will increase its focus on owned IP and other projects. Activision and Bungie are committed to a seamless transition for the Destiny franchise and will continue to work closely together during the transition on behalf of the community of Destiny players around the world."

Both Destiny and Destiny 2 have been uneven games, delivering a mixture of highs and lows, with Bungie often correcting mistakes and offering dramatically improved experiences with post-launch expansions. Destiny 2 in particular has been maligned by some for its use of microtransactions and the Eververse store. While it's difficult to separate decisions made by Bungie versus Activision, some players worried that the latter's influence on the game had resulted in the heavy push of Eververse.

Reports have surfaced in the past about development issues with the series, as Destiny 2 was said to be rebooted at one point. Signs of possible strain between the companies' relationship became public last year following the release of the Forsaken expansion in September. Despite being received much more warmly than the base game, Activision publicly stated that it had been a commercial disappointment. This in turn led to Destiny 2 director Luke Smith responding on Twitter, saying, "We are not disappointed with Forsaken. We set out to build a game that Destiny players would love, and at Bungie, we love it too. Building Destiny for players who love it is and will remain our focus going forward."

In Bungie's new statement regarding the split, it stated, "With Forsaken, we've learned, and listened, and leaned in to what we believe our players want from a great Destiny experience. Rest assured there is more of that on the way. We'll continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap, and we're looking forward to releasing more seasonal experiences in the coming months, as well as surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond.

"Thank you so much for your continued support. Our success is owed in no small part to the incredible community of players who have graced our worlds with light and life. We know self-publishing won't be easy; there’s still much for us to learn as we grow as an independent, global studio, but we see unbounded opportunities and potential in Destiny. We know that new adventures await us all on new worlds filled with mystery, adventure, and hope. We hope you'll join us there."

The news provides no indication of what Destiny's future might hold; Bungie appears to be fully dedicated to it and can perhaps have more freedom in how it handles Destiny 2 and beyond. But we also know part of Bungie is looking elsewhere, as just last year it received $100 million in funding from NetEase to work on non-Destiny projects. Bungie is a massive company, allowing it to work on multiple projects at once, and it insisted the Destiny franchise will "grow for many years to come. Our commitment to that world is not diminished by this announcement."

Unless they do something big with destiny 3 i think it may be too late for the series. Gamers have already been burned twice and there are many who won't go anywhere near 3 because they don't want to be burned again. Also, other FREE to play sci fi shooter looters like warframe have managed to stay afloat with plenty of content in the form of free updates. No fear of the game ever becoming obsolete because the devs are always adding to it instead of abandoning it and making a sequel for easy profit.

Getting away from activision is a step in the right direction but if they want destiny to survive they need some drastic changes in 3. Even then, it still may be too late.

I still like the original Destiny the best! It had its issues, but I liked it better than 2. Maybe they will get 3 right when it releases I hope:P

Confusious once said " Destiny is no place to go, when the Ming dynasty is asleep rather mistakenly dead, for when the great kingdom to rise one must fall and only on the night of the emperor's great legacy we behead" as the great mysterious man once said.

Good for them. I think the biggest companies always ruin games because dollar signs are more important than making gamers happy. Which is insanely stupid, because said gamers are the ones bringing in the money!

Activision may not be as evil as EA, but I'm hopeful this will be very good for Destiny.

I’d like to see a decent single player come out of Bungie personally. Maybe an alternate cast of characters where online coop play is optional similar to the way Borderlands multiplayer is.

Or maybe revive the Myth series.

Maybe Destiny 3 might be worth taking a look at. Aside from Betas/Demos I've pretty much ignored the series.

This is a good opportunity to see how much bigger companies hold other companies back, if at all.

So, reflecting back on the vaunted "10 year plan" for Destiny - what a mediocre disappointment spread across 2 games and a barrage of overpriced DLC and microtransactions.

I would hope for Bioware to be able to get out from under the game company destroying EA but it's already too late for that. All the talent, imagination, game loving people have long left Bioware. Blizzard is also in the same boat.

I sure hope Bungie has done this in time, we shall see,

@sdzald: Once the doctors left Bioware (the former owners) and sold to EA, we knew it was over for them.

Bioware may be the next closure.

@sdzald: BioWare is owned by EA. Blizzard is owned by Activision. Bungie was never owned by Activision; they just had a publishing deal.

@Mogan: Well, Bungie was owned by MS and got out. But Bungie also made a fortune in that era and could afford to buy their freedom. Hell, MS even built them their own state of the art studio on their campus.

@Mogan:

Yep a very valid point and it makes the possibility of either Bioware or Blizzard from ever being companies that put out decent games remote, although I think Blizzard has the best chance. Bioware is finished no matter what happens to them going forward, EA has done a 'good' job on them.

@sdzald: The internet loves to talk about BioWare like they're dead now, but I think they've put out some of their best games after being bought by EA. Andromeda is really the only significant black mark on their record (well, that old Sonic game might have been terrible); everything else is pretty good to great.

@Mogan: I disagree. They are most certainly a competent developer, but I've been playing Bioware games since 1998 and that Bioware magic is gone! That thing that made people fall in love with Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire on XBOX and The Original Mass Effect and Dragon Age is gone. Many of the people who made that magic are gone. They have been replaced by younger people who seem way too political, too social agenda driven too even see straight... and their characters development and overarching narratives are suffering for it.

Are they dead? Of course not! They're more like the undead, shambling around in a corpse that use to be filled with life, still wearing the clothing of its owner.

@Mogan: Yes, Mass Effect used to be good. But there hasn't been any Knights of the Old Republic level of quality since EA, despite EA HAVING the damn Star Wars license. Jade Empire was also a great game. There's little creativity under EA. They would've never green lit a game like Jade Empire.

In spite of its shortcomings, the game itself has some of the better shooter mechanics period. Bungie had a great track record (Halo 3's story was meh...but the multiplayer was among the best ever made). I think they could turn the ship around with the right method. Perhaps by taking the game out of our solar system. Perhaps by actually attempting a story. Who knows? But with Activision out of the way, things are looking better for them. Hopefully they will return to greatness. Frankly, with bank like that backing them it's a shame it wasn't done right because it could have been excellent.

I dont think Destiny 2 is that bad at all. I picked up the Forsaken bundle at Christmas on the PS Store for like $30 and I feel that money is well spent. Mind you I burnt myself out with it, so I moved on to another game for the time being, but I come back from time to time. I personally would not have enjoyed it for the full price of the game plus the price of the expansions. I probably would have grinded more to try and get my money out of it so to speak, but its not horrible by any means in my opinion.

@pcps4xb: The game's not bad. It has some of the best shooting mechanics of any console first person shooter. Playing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel after Destiny made Borderlands feel hollow by comparison. It also has a fun campaign to go through as well, and some interesting and varied environments.

Destiny gets beat up a lot because they positioned themselves as this lifestyle game like an MMO, but it get new content fast enough or varied enough to hold it as a single lifestyle game. Also, with regards to Destiny 2, its loot mechanics were a step back from The Taken King expansion of the first game and generally not rewarding enough to warrant extended play. I don't know if they've improved on this, as I stopped playing about a year ago.

That being said, I don't regret the time I spent on it. I had fun. Lots of it. There is certainly enough content to warrant the free base game play or the $30 bundle.

@pcps4xb: Destiny is great if you're looking for a loot shooter with great gameplay. The story is weak, but the shooting mechanics are top notch, the art direction is amazing, and the loop of shooting and looting is satisfying. If you're looking for something to play fairly casually, Destiny 2 is great. Especially if you can play with a friend or two.

@pcps4xb: Its shallow, youll fight the same enemies over and over, the enemies wont even have mods like on borderlands or shadow warrior 2 that even tho the monster pool was limited, having elites with mods made combat variable. At least for me that isnt worth 30 bucks. And youll have to fork extra cash for the new content, forsaken is content from last year and all the videos being posted here are from the new content.

@pcps4xb: Just wait a little longer then, am sure the campaign will be released as F2p like they gave away the base game with no DLC for free on november. Campaign is very short, i dont think it will take more than 8-10 hours to complete it, might take less if you are on holiday and can commit hours to the game.

@pcps4xb: I just did a quick count using a wiki. There are 51 unique enemies. Most humanoid enemies have two different weapon variants. There are elite versions of enemies, but they are mostly just more health. Enemy mods used to appear only on special hard-mode missions called "Nightfalls." I don't know if they still do those (I haven't played in a year).

@Mogan: They shouldn't have joined with Activision in a first place. They also might have negotiated more creative freedom.

They have lost a lot of talent during this Activision alliance, due to "creative differences"... and I would be surprised if they can win many/any of them back.

Besides - splitting from Activision doesn't guarantee they will change approach much. We don't even know how much did they fight to split, and how much has Activision decided to cut them loose because Destiny 2 was not returning expected results.

Of course I am hoping that D3 will be the game they have advertising from the beginning - but I will definitely not rush into early purchase. I'll let D3 be released and initial euphoria (paid reviews?) settle downa bit, before deciding to give it a go. Or not.

Guessing Destiny 3 will be console exclusive, and much better than Destiny 2.

Why even bother? Just start a new franchise. None cares about Destiny (anymore).

You decided to sleep with the Devil, so you have only yourself to blame for all this mess. Now you have neither the support of fans or big publisher. Epic Fail.

Why would Bungie leave that behind if they didn't have to?

@kiggor: Because that's what the developer should do when an IP fails to ignite people's interest, TWICE.

It's not like they gave a lot of creativity when designing Destiny in the first place. The franchise is as bland as they come, even compared to Halo.

@cboye18: It didn't fail to ignite gamers' interest. On the contrary. It piqued a lot of interest when Bungie went public with the game concept. They just failed to deliver on their vision, and with that came extreme disappointment. The promises that were made compared to the much more generic game with too much of Halo's DNA woven into it that we wound up getting really sank the franchise. Maybe this split will let them be more creative in the future with the series though. It certainly helps with winning back a little consumer confidence. Hopefully, it's not a case of "too little, too late" for Bungie.
