Bungie Answers Destiny 2.0.1 Questions About Microtransactions, Rewards, More

Developer talks Iron Banner lag, microtransactions, Sunbreakers.

This week saw the release of Destiny's 2.0.1 update, which added microtransactions, nerfed shotguns, brought back the Iron Banner multiplayer event, and more. It was a large update and players have voiced some concerns and questions about microtransactions and Iron Banner rewards, among other things. Now, Bungie has responded to some of the most frequently asked questions about Destiny 2.0.1.

In the latest Bungie Weekly Update, the developer said another Destiny update will introduce "more frequent and more powerful" Legendary rewards for Nightfall missions. This comes after Destiny players complained about the rewards being far too underwhelming, given the challenge, something Bungie agrees with.

In addition, Bungie stresses that it has no intention of selling King's Fall consumable buffs for real-world money. "We're not doing that," Bungie said.

Players found references to such items in the Destiny files, but Bungie says they were never intended to be sold for Silver. "Ultimately, the team decided that they didn't have a place in the game, and cut them from the experience. You're seeing some dust and echoes from the cutting room floor," it explained.

In other Destiny news, Bungie has announced that Destiny's King's Fall raid is getting a hard mode earlier than expected, though the Trials of Osiris event has been delayed due to a bug.

Read on for the full Q&A regarding Destiny's new 2.0.1 update.

"Sunbreakers?"

Indeed, we hear you. We're looking at the data, as well. It's too early to dig in and make any promises. We'll talk more soon, once we get a full picture.

"Why am I not getting my Iron Banner rewards?"

Iron Banner has been both a test of skill and your best gear, as well as a way to get a new set of gilded armor and weapons. Legendary items won't drop until you reach Rank 2 with Lord Saladin, and the pool expands as you continue to climb the ranks. The premiere items we believe you'll want to obtain are also available for purchase from Lord Saladin himself. Subsequent Iron Banner events will include additional pieces of gear.

"What are you doing about the lag in Iron Banner?"

If you're manipulating network traffic, or if your connection is so bad that you're unintentionally compromising the experience of other players, we'll issue a temporary restriction from all Crucible activity. The first round of these restrictions went live yesterday. The second wave is happening as we speak. As always, we start small to ensure our tools are properly calibrated, and widen the net as we become more confident that we’re ensnaring the actual perpetrators of shenanigans. Fair Warning: We will also permanently ban repeat offenders! When Trials of Osiris is live, we'll be utilizing the same policy and technology. Play nice, and please make use of our in-game reporting tools should you come across a player you believe needs some extra time and attention from our team. Our matchmaking engineers are also monitoring the overall health of the matchmaking pool writ large with an eye toward making improvements across the board. You'll be hearing from that team about their progress in the weeks to come.

"How about those Nightfall rewards?"

There is another update inbound as soon as next week that will deliver more frequent and more powerful Legendary rewards to the Nightfall loot tables. We'll save the specific numbers for the Patch Notes. And, of course, the best reality about the nature of those rewards will be found in your feedback.

"Someone datamined files that prove Tess will be selling King's Fall consumables! You said you wouldn't do that! Why are you doing that!?"

We're not doing that. The files in question were actually first uncovered some time ago, well before the launch of Eververse Trading Company. They weren't ever intended to be sold in exchange for Silver. What you're seeing are remnant files for Three of Coins or Moldering Shard like items that would have been available from Xûr. Ultimately, the team decided that they didn't have a place in the game, and cut them from the experience. You’re seeing some dust and echoes from the cutting room floor. Files that get datamined aren't official sources of news, though we understand why they are intriguing.

"Why did you change the economy for Strange Coins and Weapon Parts?"

In Year 2, we took steps to streamline and simplify the economy for players, with hopes that providing more direct paths to gear and the stuff you needed to upgrade that gear would just be more satisfying across the board. Changes to economy of the game are made in the interest of preserving the value of the items in your inventory and ensuring that you have good uses for the things you’re saving. Weapon Parts, specifically, have been particularly vexing. Some players use a LOT of Parts, whereas others use almost none. Still, we are very aware that this is a choke point for some players, and further adjustments may be in order. In all cases, we're still watching our reports and listening to feedback, and we will continue to react to how things are going.

Here is the progression of the common Destiny player my self-included.

1) Waits to buy game due to all of the bad press from people on the forums.

2) Breaks down, buys, and enjoys the living "S" out of it for a little bit.

3) Defends the game because I am enjoying the living "S" out of it.

4) Slowly but surely finds myself getting bored, but still plays then because friends are still playing. This leads to more defending the game.

5) D-day the time in which you finally get bored with it. You realize what it is. You figure out there is so much diminishing return vs time spent playing. You find yourself asking why I am putting more time into this cash grab.

6) New content is released. Here you finally have new stuff to go do, the game is amazing again, and then after about 10 hours of game time you have the eye opening moment. It's like you have done this before. Something feels eerily the same. Then I dons on you. This is their plan.

7) Denial. You quit the notion that this is a cash grab. You reject the idea that your grinding for hours doing the same strikes/raids/quests over, and over again. You embrace the rinse, and repeat game play. You make excuses for all the thing wrong with the game. You just keep playing.

8) Friends start to move on to new games. They start to tell you what you have known all along, but you were merely a pawn in the marketing ploy that is smeared every place including your trusty Gamespot.

9) Just a repeat of 5) above.

10) You hit the wall. You are just over Destiny. It’s like when you break up with that first hot chick. Yea she has a smashing body, but she has a hamburger vagina. The packaging looks amazing, but the contents inside are a hot mess. You find yourself writing a post about this entire endeavor, but you have this really weird feeling kind of like freedom. You go look into a mirror, and say to yourself it’s going to be ok. Then the screen fade to black. THE END!

Too bad they don't ban players for lack of moral ethics when it comes to this type of behavior. Where I don't really care what someone does in the single player this is a plague in MP and YOU KNOW there are losers that will abuse it.

Using exploits/bug/glitches should have repercussions.

Wait until they start releasing some weapons via micro-transaction only, and then after you buy them you'll get to use them for about a week or so before they nerf them into the gutter.

Pretty well stopped playing. The tower has equally been emptier. Fewer weapons parts falling makes upgrading 3 Guardians arduous and ranking up near impossible between 280-310 even with Nightfall. Getting closer to Halo 5 and Gears of War is sweet so my XBONE may get time opposed to PS4/Destiny. $40 a year later and still every month getting rebalanced, nerfed being told wait a little longer. No thanks!

I don't care personally, but I feel like the latest expansion should have been free since the original game was so barren on content. I'm not going to pay another £40 odd on it, I'm just not going to buy another Bungie game again.

The likes of Valve would make things right, Bungie though just want to milk you and stick their middle finger up at you.

They're making it harder to play this game by extending the grind... It sounds like they are preparing it for later charging to make them easier via microtransactions.

@Mogan: The leader boards suggest the opposite. the month before Sun breaker released there were like 8 titan total in the top 100 compared with almost 80% Hunter. The Titan class was literally dead before this super came into effect. it has balanced the crucible!!!

@Mogan: gunslinger, blade dancer, void walker and storm caller are all great for PVP. Titan bubble isn't great, fist of havoc isn't the best and finally we get to have a good super and people want to bitch and moan about it.

@bogeta24: IF you're on a team, Ward of Dawn is the best super in the game in everything except Mayhem (and it used to be way better). Sunbreakers need a nerf because their super is just objectively better than Golden Gun, Arc Blade, Radiance. When I pop Hammer of Sol, I'm tough like a Bladedancer/Sunsinger, and just as good at close range and better at long range, and I've got more shots with my one-hit-kill ranged weapon than a Gunslinger. Plus I heal on kill and my shots seek.

The only nerf I'd make is to slow down the rate at which Sunbreakers can throw their hammer, and also slow down the super drain so they can still throw just as many. That way they can still obliterate people at long range, but the Gunslinger is faster with less stamina, and they aren't quite as devastating at close range vs. groups, which is supposed to be Bladedancer/Striker territory, but will still win every one-on-one fight.

I like playing a Sunbreaker because I've got the best super, but everyone else is also playing a Sunbreaker because they've got the best super and it's sorta become the new Thorn.

I hate how they nerf things like the economy of the game just to try to increase the grind and amount of time people play and when people complain they play it like "oh were just trying to find the right balance for everyone." BS you know it was better before the nerf, your just trying to add longevity to the game the wrong way. People always eventually get tired of the grind. Try adding more content, better rewards and funner activites and people will hang around longer.

For the good of gaming, someone must build a time machine and prevent Halo's creation. It will end all of this.

Loading times is still my biggest problem, doing the quest line, load for a minute, 2-3 minute mission, load to the map, next step Tower, turn in quest, take next step, load to map, choose earth, load times load, repeat., doesn't seem to be an end to how long this game can load.

Gaming is getting very expensive with microtransactions. The successful business models of the mobile gaming hurting us from behind. The publishers need to realize core gaming is different than the mobile gaming and requires different approach to satisfy the consumers. If this microtransaction trend continues, many people will soon be fed up and lose interest on the core gaming, which finally resulting in another crisis of gaming industry.

I'm not the biggest fan of this game, I enjoyed TTK and I still play it, but this says something about how you, as a company or publisher, approach a game like Destiny when you are still trying to fix things from year 1...still. More than a year later and they can't just find the sweet spot for nothing.

Instead of adding more free content, giving more to dedicated fans, being open to change and letting players play the game their way, bungievision still manages to 'nerf' or 'buff' certain weapons or playlists that really has no relevance to the longevity to this game. Still no fixes for lag, network connectivity issues and adding more variants to strikes or crucible maps.

I get that you want to 'fix' your wrongs, but for phuckssake man, every time there is an update on Destiny about a week later they talk about how they need to fix it or we get the religiously spoken "We know that so and so is broken, but dont worry, we are on it!"...its getting annoying how many of these articles continue to surface. I'm not hating or anything, I'm just tired of bungievision mulching over the same shit over and over again...sorry I typed so long, I did a Nightfall and only got strange coins -.-

@lnception: The nightfalls are easy though, also you can use those coins, to buy 3oC from Xur, to net you an exotic. Exotics are so easy to get now it's ludacris, in a poll, most ppl have obtained 20+ exotics in the past month, most ppl didn't have that all of year 1.

@inebriantia: exotics are easier to get now, but unfortunately, getting 2, 3. 4, duplicates of the same one over and over is beyond annoying.

@inebriantia: You're right and that's what's disappointing. I appreciate that anyone can have access to certain exotics if they're willing to follow the quest steps to obtain it. It was frustrating playing hundreds of hours before and never getting that Gjallarhorn or other coveted weapon, but when you did get an exotic drop, it was exciting! Now it's like "oh cool, another exotic for my collection". So although I appreciate the new system, I don't like the new quest options for exotics. I'd rather see the random drops, but with a system that detects what you already have or don't have, and a calculation that increases your chances based on how much you play, for example.

@Reagan2791: some people got VERY lucky with RNG in year 1, while a lot of other people got absolutely nothing in year one because of RNG..i got a grand total of 1 exotic drop in year one..one!!! i can count on one hand how many blue engrams i got, even less of the purple engrams, and zero gold engrams. i had to buy everything from xur and the vanguard to get to level 30 . so with that said. i love the new system. the game is actually fun to play now. I like the fact you can do quests for an exotic now, rather than depend solely on RNG. RNG completely sucked in year one. glad its no where near as bad as it was. This game is a 90% co-op game, the other 10% being crucible. so who cares how easy it is for people to get exotics now. 90% of the time the people getting those exotics are helping you with them, by teaming up with you to do strikes, the nightfall, the raid, the weekly heroic story mission, and on and on.

@lnception: I totally agree. Seems like they hate the idea of powerful weapons. Always nerfing or buffing one thing or another makes the act of finding weapons less appealing because if it is super powerful, you can expect it to be nerfed and they somehow expect you to love a weapon that is pretty dull and underpowered in just about every situation.
