Bungie Addresses Destiny Microtransaction Concerns

"We aren't (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King's Fall drop rates for Silver."

Destiny's new microtransactions are currently limited to emotes only. Though Bungie may one day expand the offerings, don't expect to be able to buy items that buff drop rates for the new King's Fall raid.

Writing on Twitter, The Taken King creative director Luke Smith said, "We aren't (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King's Fall drop rates for Silver."

His comments come after players discovered (via IGN) new items in the raid, such as buffs for armor and weapon drops, well as one that lets you acquire additional Moldering Shards. Some thought Bungie might sell these items for Destiny's new in-game currency, Silver. But that's not going to be the case.

Some have also wondered if Bungie might sell level-boosters, like the one that comes with The Taken King, for Silver. Smith did not respond to this specific item. It wouldn't be uncharted territory for an Activision game, however, as World of Warcraft also sell level boosts.

Destiny's microtransactions arrived on Tuesday through the game's major update, which also made a number of other tweaks, refinements, and adjustments. For more on Destiny's new in-game store, check out GameSpot's breakdown of all the emotes available in the store and what they cost. You can also watch the video above to get a closer look at the motes, including one based on "the Carlton" from Fresh Prince.

As a Destiny fan, if Bungie extends this micro-transactions to things that actually affect gameplay..such as buffs to get an exotic (similar to the three of coins) or getting a better drop rate for anything, I will put Destiny down. I am not about playing games that are P2W. Cosmetic stuff is one thing, but giving some one an advantage over me simply because they used real money....? Nope, I'll pass.

Almost 10 yrs ago Bethesda tried to charge $2.50 for horse armor. Gamers lost their minds ( rightly so, btw). Today Bungie wants to charge $5.00 for "The Carlton", and gamers shrug and say "Ok", while others gleefully rush to their piggy banks. Conditioning is great isn't it? Bungie thinks so.

The real question is why would anyone believe them?

Microtransactions in a paid game are despicable.

Lets put this in perspective. Go to the movies? Spend 15-20 dollars for an 1:45 pos? Ok, that's one session of Destiny.

Microtransactions need to be kept out of full retail priced games. Especially if they already have overpriced dlc

If folk want to pay for emotes, then they will. If they don't, then they won't. I think there would be a major problem if , say 2 million gamers paid for the highest tier of Silver coins. That would show Bungie that people will pay for whatever and that might open the game up to micro transactions that could impact on better firearms or Armour, but for the time being I'm sure this won't happen. Destiny as both a game and a community is just nowhere near big enough or deep enough to be turned into a pay and play.. I personally used the silver that everyone got for free to buy 2 emotes and that is where it ends for me.

They aren't selling bundles of silver just to use on emotes. This is just to ease people into the idea of it. Scumgie and Wacktivision at it again

oww god so many sad people are going to go on this article and spout nonsense like a kid claiming all sorts of rubbish about how all sorts of manner of things will be pay-walled, there bloody emotes, nobody actually cares, if they did paywall anything it will be non game impacting things which again nobody actaully cares about.

@repetitively: no my comment ACTUALLY uses common sense, thats the difference. there no sense in coming here spouting illogical information about things that have near 0% chance of happening. the reasoning behind most of the comments are simply spite from the people who got stung and can't put something behind them, so they try there hardest to spread the hate because if there not happy they sure well hate for anyone else to be.

@neowarrior793: Obviously people DO care about these "non game impacting" items, because there are a bunch of angry comments about them (mostly stupid, but still).

As far as your prediction that Bungie/Activision will never put anything game impacting behind a pay wall ... you're making that prediction and calling it common sense from the perspective of a gamer outside the companies who actually make and sell the game. You're not actually in a position to have all the information the folks who'd make those microtransaction related decisions would have. You might be right, I hope you're right, but none of us can actually know because we're only seeing the game from the user's side, and then only through our personal experience.

I agree with Repetitively [realized I got you guys mixed up], there's nothing wrong with people being cautious (not panicky and stupid, just reasonable and cautious).

@Mogan: no they dont, i would literally eat my own foot if even half of these comment were close to genuine. most of them are simple spite messages i know because these people have been on the same articles (for a year) saying the same thing almost a copy past every time. some of them post things that were addressed in the game and still call them negatives. they have never played the newer version or even updated versions so there narrow view is all they fall back on. it also makes no sense to publicly claim things that haven't happened, you dont presume the worst (like a random mugging) when you walk into a shop that a guy with a hoodie came in as well, so why the hell would you presume the worst because some random dace routines can be bought in a game. its just basic common sense, just like the fact that people in bungie and activation know they would be worse off if they implemented any type of micro translation if it effected game-play for unfair advantages, they full well know the blacklash that would happen so it simply wont. dont get me wrong this isn't to do with the game its to do with basic business decision making.

@neowarrior793: common sense eh? We are both talking about Activision right? Illogical would be you given this a 0% chance without any actual inside knowledge.

The company that sold you at full price a very content lacking game, that required another 80 bucks before people actually felt they had a full game. And you somehow can't see them charging for more than just dances. Yeah, common sense tells me to not put anything past these greedy pricks

@repetitively: oww so because YOU got the bad end the stick its a problem for everyone else? that not common sense that you presuming the worse because YOU got hit. not everyone had that negative experience, unlike you i dont ridicule based on my own perception but with other people and how they enjoyed the game or not. this is the difference between common sense and what you just said.

@neowarrior793: no, but you sure like making factless predictions based on your own perception.

I actually didn't get burned destiny was a gift and up to this day have only spent 40 dollars on it.

But I find it funny how you say you use othere people's perception as well yet conviently leave out those that have a gripe with the game and rightfully so.

It looks a lot like because YOU like it that no one else should dislike it's practices.

I also like how you basically admitted it's not right what they've done

" because YOU got the bad end the stick"

"comments are simply spite from the people who got stung"

You know it's wrong and still defend them against ppl who have a reason to gripe.....lol

Ps: i never dissed the game, I just used common sense to tell me why people have a problem.

@neowarrior793: ok dude, play it off like you make sense all you want. Pretend that no one understands you all you want. We understand you and nobody agrees.

You are entitled to your opinion just next time when you say you are using other peoples perception, try not to just pick the ones that doesn't contradict yours.

Don't say people are hating in spite of being burned or getting the bad end of the stick then pretend people have no reason to hate on it.

@repetitively: no because there is no reason to hate on it, there hating it because of spite and being burned. it doesn't even matter that its micro transactions, im pointing out the very notion that people were shitting on this game for the simple case they can without even bothering to read. im simply showing the level of integrity and the lack of it, its content that next to nobody truly cared about but the fact that people could go up in arms about it. its peoples very clear sad addiction for self satisfaction from others when no matter how you look at it relates little to what you would even bother to say in real life. the sadder thing is how people cannot even see it for themselves and all the comments around, the mob mentality they show. BTW just to show how bad this is i dont even like destiny, its no defense of it or of micro transactions, this game can burn in hell for all i care.

@neowarrior793: lol so much denial. Wonder if it's a pattern for you to do this when you are contradicted and youre out of moves.

Bottom line is common sense would tell you to be cautious with this. Just as you predict they won't. Others can predict they will push for more MT. Neither would be hard to believe.

People were burnt by greed once, they have every reason to believe they will make more greedy moves

@neowarrior793: where in the world did I say people shouldn't enjoy this game?

I've only said that people have a reason to hate on this game if they feel like it. They have a reason to be cautious.

Theirs people who will hate any game. It's happen it happens articles. Uncharted articles. Gears, fable, GT, etc. Why are you only on this article whining about it?

I can see them expanding the microtransactions to shaders and emblems.

Since these do not impact gameplay (it can be argued that shaders do, simply because of "blending in" with environments) they can be sold for silver. I, for one, would buy a shader or two. Probably wouldn't buy an emblem, though.

@lordossiss: I imagine they'll sell shaders, emblems, sparrows, ships, emotes, maybe even class items or boosts like the Spark of Light to get characters into whatever the newest content is faster. I don't think I'll mind so long as we can still get plenty of all these things by playing the game.
