Bungie, Activision lock down 10-year exclusivity

Suburban Seattle shop will remain independent, develop wholly owned new IP exclusively for Call of Duty publisher through 2020 on "all platforms" Microsoft retains Halo ownership; Sony says PS3 edition will be "Halo on steroids."

With a potentially $625 million lawsuit filed against Activision by Infinity Ward employees this week, it didn't seem possible events surrounding the publisher could get any more dramatic. Then, this morning, Activision announced it had locked down one of gaming's top developers for a decade-long exclusivity deal.

Expect to see the Activision logo next to this through 2020.
Expect to see the Activision logo next to this through 2020.

Under the terms of the agreement, the studio behind the heralded Halo series has allied with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 publisher for "an exclusive 10-year partnership to bring Bungie's next big action game universe to market." The deal will give Activision exclusive international publishing rights to all future Bungie games based on an unnamed new property through 2020.

According to Activision COO Thomas Tippl, Bungie's "new intellectual property" will be available on "all platforms"--including the PlayStation 3. Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications chief Patrick Seybold backed it up with a Twitter post, saying, "Marrying [Bungie's] creative minds and incredible talent to the power of PS3 will be like giving PS3 fans Halo on steroids."

The multiplatform move marks an end to the suburban Seattle studio's current Xbox 360 exclusivity. Since 2001, Bungie has effectively developed Halo games solely for Xbox platforms, farming out the PC port of Halo: Combat Evolved to Gearbox Software (Borderlands) and Halo 2 for Windows Vista to an internal Microsoft Game Studios team.

Activision Blizzard COO Thomas Tippl and Bungie president Harold Ryan.
Activision Blizzard COO Thomas Tippl and Bungie president Harold Ryan.

Microsoft Game Studios had been Bungie's exclusive publisher, as Microsoft owned the studio until 2007. That year, the shop stunned the industry by breaking away from the Redmond, Washington-based software giant to become an independent shop. Reps for the studio have previously said that it is working on an all-new game and that Halo: Reach will be its last Halo title.

Microsoft continues to own the Halo IP, and recently formed an entire internal division, 343 Industries, to manage and develop it. Following the deal, it gave the following statement after the Activision deal was announced: "Our partnership with Bungie as a first-party developer for Xbox 360 remains unchanged, and right now we're deeply engaged with them on the development of Halo: Reach, which is poised to be the biggest game of 2010."

Today's announcement underlined the fact that Bungie will remain an independent studio and retain ownership and control of its new IP, with Activision providing publishing duties and (presumably) financing. Those terms sound eerily reminiscent of the arrangement struck between Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment, the indie studio recently formed by fired Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella.

To hear Tippl discuss the deal--and literally say "let's kick EA's ass!"--check out the video press below. (Video starts at 1:04.) To hear Bungie explain how the deal go down, read GameSpot's interview with community manager Brian Jarrard and writer/design director Joseph Staten.

I hope this certainly works out...because Activision ruined Infinity Ward and It would be a shame to see a great developer like Bungie get ripped off.All I can say that the "Men" that developed the Modern Warfare I.P. are brilliant and with their team assembling behind E.A. these "Men"will "Respawn"a new I.P. that will be most certainly Awesome!!

Activision won't own Halo in any way. Microsoft still retains the rights to the Halo series. This is only regarding Bungie's new IP. Probably a good thing though because I never really liked Halo under Bungie's direction. Maybe MS can do something better with Halo than Bungie that'll actually pique my interest.

@jpsaply : If you want to believe they aren't sellouts, be my guest. But tell me what game they have made since Oni that weren't a milking Halo (Except Halo 1 which was a new IP) game for Microsoft Studios? So what you are saying , even though if you agree on them beeing sellouts, are that you confirm what I say. They had every opportunity and with the Halo income they had the resources as well, to make a new game. But alas they did not. That is sellout in every definition of the word.

I'm pretty sure Halo will remain Microsoft exclusive. It's the new and old things Bungie can bring to the table that will turn heads I hope. Kind of like how Mass Effect stayed Microsoft exclusive, but Bioware's other IPs are multi platform. Still, it's for Activision. That's low.

@d3emondav3 -.-... Activision doesn't own Halo, Microsoft does and will continue to. Halo will never be on the ps3, however games made by the people who originally made Halo might be on the PS3.

Halo coming to PS3: Unlikely. Bungie pumping out games, under orders from Activision, resulting in mediocre games: Probably. Activision eventually killing the Halo series: It is inevitable.

Wow! What a freaking bold move from Activision. Just when you thought they were down they sign a deal with Bungie? Way to compensate for Infinity Ward leaving. I really hate to say it because I think Activision sucks now, but what a smart move! I'm sick to death of all things Halo and alls Bungie has ever had besides in my book is the Myth series, Maybe we'll see that resurge?

I have no idea what to think about this. There are so many possibilities as to what could happen! Good Outcomes: 1) It turns out to be a good partnership for both companies, and everything works out well. 2) The ability to put Bungie games on other platforms allows Bungie to grow. 3) Activision could actually care for Bungie, and give them a nice, soft cushion of IW money for them to lay on if they need any help.= Activision might support Bungie in possible times of need. Bad Outcomes: 1) Activision screws over Bungie, taking Halo IP rights and distributing it to tons of other, unexperienced developers, milking the series dry until death. 2) Activision treats Bungie like they did with IW. 3) Bungie is quitely doing this to get back at Activision for screwing over IW, and Bungie internally takes down Activision. 4) Bungie is trying to fight Respawn more effectively by putting their great games on more platforms. 5) Bungie dies. 6) Bungie quietly goes on a covert mission with Blizzard and all other valued developers and leads them to their independant studio, and they all get signed at Microsoft Game Studios for publishing, and Activision dies. So many possiblities here, and it's also interesting that they decided to do this for 10 full years, as the gaming industry and technology change rapidly every year. Maybe they should have signed for only tops 5 years.

Epic fail for Bungie , what were they thinking knowing what went down at IW , doesn't make any sense on their part. It does however on Activision's part since this is clearly a move to counter EA's Respawn . I used to hate EA for making the same games every year but Activision has become worse so i'm rooting for EA. Besides, Respawn ( practically ex-IW ) kicks the hell out of Bungie since CoD > Halo from every single point of view . Maybe this direct competition will cause 2 great new franchises to be made so GAME ON!

"Let's kick EA's ass"? Really? I think you've ****** yourselves here Bungie. I mean EA still loves to milk their cash cows but not like Activision does. Let's see how long you last under Kotick's boot WITHOUT your precious Halo series. And don't get me wrong, I'm not a CoD fan or Halo fan, but CoD made 3 billion dollars. 3 billion. Who has the people that made that game? EA. (Still not a fan of EA either but I mean that's just a stupid thing for Tippl to say.)

Too bad Activision is maliciously tainted by the a-holes in charge, particularly the Bobby Kotik types, who are making the gaming industry into a "Pump store shelves with yearly half-assed games with big, known names, and then fire the developers before cashing in the profits" Time to tear the tumor out, and get into the lengthy process of trying to make people not horrendously hate Activision anymore.
