Bungie: 90% of Destiny Players Are on PS4/Xbox One, PC Version Not Ruled Out
"It was a good time for us to really focus on the current-gen platforms," Bungie says about Rise of Iron.
Destiny's next expansion, Rise of Iron, is coming to current-generation consoles only, though Bungie has teased an "upgrade path" for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners. Barrett mentioned this upgrade path today, telling us more details on the specifics will come later.
As for why Rise of Iron is only coming to new consoles, Barrett said more than 90 percent of Destiny players today are on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If Bungie were to bring Rise of Iron to last-gen systems, it might mean that some other content would have to go.
"It was a good time for us to really focus on the current-gen platforms; we've said that over 90 percent of our players now are on the current-gen platforms," he explained. "We've gotten to the point where to continue to add new stuff, we would start to have to take things away. And so, we really wanted to make sure Rise of Iron is the best experience possible. So we've focused on current-gen for now."
Another example of a cross-generational game that has stopped releasing new content for its last-gen version is Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar is now focusing exclusively on the new-generation versions for the latest GTA Online updates.
Destiny's three previous expansions, The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King, were all released across old- and current-generation consoles.
Also in our interview today, we asked Barrett if Bungie would ever released Destiny on PC. He said this has not been ruled out, but don't expect it anytime soon. "No updates on that today, but we're always looking at what platforms make sense for Destiny," he explained.
Check back soon for more from GameSpot's interview with Barrett.
You can check out all of the details of the Rise of Iron expansion here. It will launch on September 20 for the PS4 and Xbox One for $30. It's described as bigger than the first two expansions, The Dark Below and House of Wolves. If you preorder, you can snag an iron-skinned version of the infamous Gjallarhorn rocket launcher.
