Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, more dropped by Activision

Publisher passes on a slew of Vivendi Games' in-development titles; 50 Cent, World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, Wet also affected.

Earlier today, Activision Publishing announced a streamlining of its Vivendi Games operations, saying it would be bringing into the fold five of that company's franchises: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Prototype, and one unannounced game.

An Activision representative later confirmed for GameSpot that those would be the only Vivendi Games franchises coming out of the publisher. That leaves a number of high-profile projects in limbo, including Double Fine Productions' Brutal Legend, as well as Wet, Ghostbusters, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, World at Conflict: Soviet Assault, 50 Cent Blood on the Sand, Zombie Wranglers, Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, plus several Xbox Live Arcade titles.

"The only franchises that Activision Publishing will release are based on Crash Bandicoot, Ice Age and Spyro, as well as Prototype, and one other game that has not yet been announced," the representative said. "We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing."

Activision Blizzard has other publishing arms like Blizzard Entertainment and Activision Value that were not covered by the press release and could be among the options being reviewed. As of press time, representatives from those companies did not return requests for comment.

A scheduled Comic-Con International panel on the Ghostbusters game was abruptly cancelled last week, with no explanation given to attendees. However, the game was on the show floor in playable form.

[UPDATE]: A Sierra Games representative told GameSpot he couldn't speak about all the titles on the list in need of a publisher, but stressed that Ghostbusters is not canceled.

So you mean to tell me that World at Conflict: Soviet Assault is also cancelled. Those bastards!!

Avatar image for jknight5422

Somebody should make a video game about destroying video games in development.

Avatar image for ken-e

Why is the company that was bought out making all the decisions??!

Avatar image for DEWMAN08

I was looking forward to Chronicles of Riddick, Wet and also Ghostbusters.

Avatar image for Hardly_Alive

If by focus on succeeding you mean "lets put out more mediocre movie tie-ins that no one except uninformed parents might buy". Then yes, succeed away.

Avatar image for LURCH87

who cares?

Avatar image for snoowballsy

this is totally lame, brutal legend and chronicles of Riddick were going to be sweet. Ghost Busters was going to suck, but they're saving Crash bandicoot and spyro. when was the last time either of those franchises released a good game?

Avatar image for sniperhare

None of the games they canceled looked good. It's a smart choice to focus on the games that might be a success. Still, out the ones left, Prototype looks to be the only one that I might rent.

Can you guys read? Apparently NOT, because at the bottom update, it was stated that Ghostbusters "is not canceled"!!! Here, let me copy and past it for all of you lazy people out there, who obviously couldn't continue reading to the end of the article. This sounds like somthing Nintendo would do to stick with established licenses. Welcome to Videogame Market Crash: The Sequel.

Avatar image for Gen007

hmm activision finally being smart these games were dropped probably because they werent looking to good brutal legend looked good but it probably would flop and ghost busters is a pure cash in.

Avatar image for kingeliran

so it means the games are canceled?

Avatar image for Zerosumgame

Ghoustbusters? are you kidding me? it looks ok but the problem is the story is getting too predictable. It won't go well I am sure.

Avatar image for Whitewind617

jesus christ, activision, wtf are you thinking? the titles you chose to keep are without a doubt the ones people care least about. It is not even speculation to say that they are clearly only looking at marketing value in deciding to keep only those series, as their quality is only decent to not good, while ghostbusters and Brutal Legend were shaping up to be excellent games. But Tim Schafer would never allow his game to be tossed so easily, and Ghostbusters seems safe, so this may not be too bad.

Avatar image for Croleusex32

They freakin better get a publisher for Ghostbusters... If this game gets canned I may just go postal... Seriously... thats how much I am (was?) looking forward to this game... i've been waiting for this game since I was a kid!

Ice Age!?!?!?! Casual gaming is becoming an increasingly sharp double edged blade. Aside from prototype this looks like a blatant slap to the proverbial face of hardcore gamers. If they wanted to ease gamers fears of them going EA this was the wrong move. They're dumping cool original titles to rehash old concepts... sound familiar? In fact if I was EA I'd see about getting publishing rights to a few of those. Unless they really are going to publish them through blizzard ent or activision value in which case I'd say this is horrible PR. In the end I feel bad for the people who put blood, sweat and tears into developing all those titles.

Avatar image for buzzguy

Somehow Activision thinks Spyro games still sell...

Avatar image for Tremblay343

Ghostbusters not canceled! That's all i wanted to know.

Avatar image for ozzdog123

The only 2 I care about is Riddick and Brutal Legends

I'm looking forward to Brutal Legend, Wet, Ghostbusters, and Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, so I hope none of those get axed. I'm also interested in playing World at Conflict: Soviet Assault if it ends up having mouse and keyboard support for the PS3. Don't get rid of these games!

Avatar image for spikedwraith

Actually the new Riddck game has just been announced to be a sequel to the film, not a remake anymore.

Avatar image for cosmothehound

the new riddick was just going to be a small expansion anyway plus the original game i think. doesnt matter. ghostbusters is gonna suck. i love crash though always have. so woooo.

Avatar image for blorg13

all of the games will get picked up, maybe other than riddik...which I was looking forward to. Maybe leisure suit Larry too. And hopefully 50 cent is canceled...but it won't be

Avatar image for MidniteShadow

Awww, no Brutal Legends? or did i miss something? kinda skimmed through it..

Avatar image for Sim_genius

Well Im glad they dropped the 50 cent game but Brutal Legend cmon avtivison! Gimme a break.-

Avatar image for nobeaner

It's a sad shame that Tim Shaffer and Double Fine have now gone through this on TWO titles in a row. Though I did read that Double Fine had some misgivings about the Activision/Vivendi merger so this might be why they were feeling that way.

Avatar image for fattyxboxbutt

Shouldnt Activision been rolling in money after they merged with Blizzard? Why would they cut games now?

Avatar image for rbop

This blows... I was really looking forward to Brutal Legend, Ghost Busters & Riddick. Hopefully they'll get picked up by someone.

Avatar image for DevilD2005

also, note to mada, Def jam vendetta is my fav fighting game franchise, minus icon. So i think rap can make some good games.

Avatar image for chimairawr

No, no, no, NO! Anyone who played Psychonauts will realise there is great potential within Double Fine Productions. If Brutal Legend has even half the humour and storyline of Psychonauts and some publicity, it could do very well. I'm hoping Activision changes its mind, or that the game is taken up by someone else.

Avatar image for DevilD2005

I am saddened. They are giving up some great potential games to move over for older franchises? I am sorry but if anyone was paying attention to the buzz ghostbusters was getting, replacing it with spyro or crash IMO is a mistake. This sounds more like making moeny then getting newer games and experiances out there. Good news, 50 cent is in limbo.

Avatar image for mada362005

they should not make 50 cents garbage game and make ghostbusters faster cuz its gonna be sweet and 100% no rap game is ever worth playing or will be

Avatar image for prdroog

Cancel GhostBusters...

Avatar image for Bladefist

I was floored when I saw this. I'm glad Ghostbusters is okay and not canceled. I got to play it at Comic Con, and although easy (beat the book boss in less than a minute), it is amazing. I looks/sounds/plays amazing. Cannot wait.

Avatar image for caseypayne69

I'm looking forward to Ghostbusters, I hope it stays.

Avatar image for FrankenLife

I'm glad that ghostbusters isn't canceled. I've been looking forward to that game for a while. I wonder if it will be playable at PAX.

Avatar image for ronnoc10

I was waiting for AB to become the next 'giant evil corporation' in video games >.

Avatar image for lextexrex

all i care about is prototype

Avatar image for rufnek69

The game takes place after the movies, but thanks for coming out!

Avatar image for prdroog

I hope none of these games ever get released. They should all be cancelled. Especially Ghostbusters...-it's like, "I've seen the movie, I know whats gonna happen!!!" at the very least they should be greatly delayed.

Avatar image for truenextgen

I do think they have loading up a tad to much, on to many different things. When you look at gaming in whole. Its kinda like everything is getting a stamp of approval. Yet they do not even have really any identity "other than a thought." Yet 80% of it is lazely brought out. It gets back to the 4 year development cycle games. Those are the ones that will be major.. Although leisure suit was a game I was looking forward to. After the last one shocked me. You need different games like that. And we need RTS's and TBS's and those games. But not just a load of junk ones. So besides a few games. And we talking like 4 on 3 systems. We havent seen really anything, that has the right amount of work into it. And you need those to blow up the second third of this gen. So either your patient with long developed games. And you get some majors to go threw the end of a gen. Or you go in a contest cycle of "about the same stuff you had in year one."

Avatar image for Mystoksor

if they want to drop wet, brutal legend, and dark athena, yet keep crash and spyro I SWEAR I will never buy another activision game

Avatar image for DanieltheDead

lol I like how they made it a point to save the absolute worst franchises among all the the titles available. Seriously, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro? Is their Board of Directors stuck in 1998?

GHOSTBUSTERS IS NOT CANCELED! READ << LINK REMOVED >> An internet report from Games fueled fears that the eagerly awaited Ghostbusters game was ash-canned by Activision Blizzard. The game and a number of other high-profile titles were left off a the company's latest release schedule. "We have conducted a thorough review of Vivendi Games' brand portfolio and are retaining those franchises and titles that are a strong fit with our long-term product strategy. We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing," Activision Blizzard said in a statement. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Radical Entertainment's Prototype and another unannounced game will be coming out. Activision says not to worry about Ghostbusters, though. It's coming: Sierra, the game's developer, said through their PR team : "[Ghostbusters] is not canceled and will not be canceled." Breathe a sigh of relief, fans... but don't breathe too hard. Here are the other titles that were left off the release list: Brutal Legend: The action-adventure game starring Jack Black is slated for release on the 360 and PS3 has no release date scheduled yet. 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand: This action game starring the famous rapper in the Middle East is scheduled for a fall release on the PS3 and 360. No word yet on what the status of this awesomely ridiculous game will be. We'll be bummed if we can't play this. Look at the trailer!
