Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, more dropped by Activision

Publisher passes on a slew of Vivendi Games' in-development titles; 50 Cent, World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, Wet also affected.

Earlier today, Activision Publishing announced a streamlining of its Vivendi Games operations, saying it would be bringing into the fold five of that company's franchises: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Prototype, and one unannounced game.

An Activision representative later confirmed for GameSpot that those would be the only Vivendi Games franchises coming out of the publisher. That leaves a number of high-profile projects in limbo, including Double Fine Productions' Brutal Legend, as well as Wet, Ghostbusters, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, World at Conflict: Soviet Assault, 50 Cent Blood on the Sand, Zombie Wranglers, Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, plus several Xbox Live Arcade titles.

"The only franchises that Activision Publishing will release are based on Crash Bandicoot, Ice Age and Spyro, as well as Prototype, and one other game that has not yet been announced," the representative said. "We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing."

Activision Blizzard has other publishing arms like Blizzard Entertainment and Activision Value that were not covered by the press release and could be among the options being reviewed. As of press time, representatives from those companies did not return requests for comment.

A scheduled Comic-Con International panel on the Ghostbusters game was abruptly cancelled last week, with no explanation given to attendees. However, the game was on the show floor in playable form.

[UPDATE]: A Sierra Games representative told GameSpot he couldn't speak about all the titles on the list in need of a publisher, but stressed that Ghostbusters is not canceled.

Crash! Spyro? Ice Age!? They keep the crap and lose Brutal Legend and World At Conflict, common-sense is no longer relevant.

Avatar image for Vorodor21

Well let's look at the bright side of this...hopefully 50 cent's garbage never sees the light of day.

Avatar image for 9mmSpliff

yeah lets take on crash bandicoot and drop World in Conflict. Thats makes sense

Avatar image for mahoney23

why would they want to keep crash and spryro and yet drop some thing as good as Wet or Bruital Legend. Man what ideots, who even plays crash games any more!

Avatar image for jasonmperry70

MadParadox, game companies do this all the time. It costs a lot less to work on an existing Intellectual Property than to develop a brand new one.

Avatar image for Generic_Dude

Whew... at least Ghostbusters isn't cancelled. I never get tired of that picture of Stay Puft they keep throwing up there.

Avatar image for anamnawshad

Damn u Activision!

Avatar image for MadParadox

i dont understand what r they thinking... making more games of a dying sequel rather than making new ones...

Avatar image for jasonmperry70

Looks like there's gonna be a few more scraps for EA to pick off of Vivendi/Activision's carcass.

Avatar image for darobinson67

alot of people r going to be mad if ghostbusters gets pushed because of this

Avatar image for goeatfood

They're going for Spyro and Ice Age instead of two of the most promising games currently in develepment across the entire industry? What the hell, people?

Avatar image for devildog19

Why keep trash like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Ice Age in the works? Personally, I'd like to see some new titles over the same rehashed garbage.

Avatar image for xbox360progamer

i honest think this game is going to be a waste and i think its going to suck... sorry..

Avatar image for doolindesperado

Ghostbusters better not be canceled! That game looked awsome; I mean did'nt we all want to be Ghostbusters when we were kids?

Avatar image for Jigsaw9798

@Rect_Pola Why would Brutal Legend be their unannounced project when they announced their dropping their role as publisher.

Avatar image for cooldude03

I guess Activision is counting on WOW to pay the bills. I want Riddick. I sure hope Activision comes to their senses. I hope they don't own the rights to those games, another publisher would be more than happy to pick up most of those franchises.

Avatar image for bannermanner

I hope Spyro, Ice Age, and Crash tank horribly, while Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, the remade Riddick, and the new World in Conflict make bank. Anything to punish Activision's lack of faith in quality developers.

Avatar image for keyser27

And people think EA is awful... Activision remains the WORST company in gaming. They only want games they can release sequels for ad infinitum on a yearly(-ish) basis. Ghostbusters looks AWESOME. I am no fan of EA, but I'd love to see them pick it up and sell 10 million copies and rub it in Activision's sorry face.

Avatar image for RaiKageRyu

Ice Age as in the digital movie? That was so long ago.

Avatar image for shiftysim

So they're leaving Riddick, Brutal Legend, and Ghostbusters in limbo for......SPYRO?! .....Oh sorry.....SPYRO AND ICE AGE?!!!! WTF?!!

Avatar image for km1498

Hopefully someone will pick some of these up, brutal legend and Ghostbusters especially.

Avatar image for Rect_Pola

Brutal Legend better be their unannounced project. Everyone on the planet says they love his work, but every game he works on is always punted around from go/no go/this publisher/that publisher.

Avatar image for TimmonsP

thats good, this article has been updated to show ghostbusters isn't cancelled, GS perhaps edit the title of the article now because there will still be some people who will jump to conclusions by reading the title only and not reading the update at the end of it.

Avatar image for bubnux

[UPDATE]: "A Sierra Games representative told GameSpot...but stressed that Ghostbusters is not canceled." Thank god.

Avatar image for Danthegamingman

Someone needs to pick up Ghostbusters and Brutal Legend. They might make good exclusives to either of the console platforms.

Avatar image for TheGTAvaccine

This is bull.

Avatar image for Paul_TheGreat

Stupid Activision.

Avatar image for runstalker

Guys, be realistic. Those games won't be canned. They're all deep into production. Activision will assign a couple of them to other divisions and the others will be sold to another publisher, but they aren't being eliminated.

Avatar image for ronniepage588

damn dude i JUST WANT A NEW RIDDICK GAME NOW!!!!! who cares about ghost busters, spyro etc etc etc. the only game they mention that we know would be excellent is a Riddick sequel.

Avatar image for makemeweak

I hate Activision...

Avatar image for Ubersj

Thank you jesus. Thank you Sierra games represntative. that game is just too far along, just too good to be true type thing tp be snatched away from us at the last minute.

Avatar image for NND1

WTF ---no GHOSTBUSTERS??????? ----- W -- T -- F..........................

Avatar image for Adam_the_Nerd

Ghostbusters better not be cancelled!

Avatar image for BraindeadRacr

Dammit, I was looking forward to Soviet Assault. Sounded like a promising expansion pack.

Avatar image for chrisbrookscool

wtf I was waiting for Ghostbusters, 50 Cent Blood on the Sand and even Lesisure Suit Larry......y r they leavin these games in limbo? and y r they even comin out with Ice Age I already no thats going 2 b a failure

Avatar image for otanikun

Ghostbusters should be fun, Brutal Legend I'm not too sure of and as for Wet; I'm interested to see how that'll play when more is available. And as for 50cent, such as the failure of the first game, why make a second? Perhaps I'll pick this up in the bargain bin a couple weeks after it's release.

Avatar image for Jason_Morris

Brutal Legend? This will displease the Gods of Heavy Metal, they have made a foolish mistake, indeed.

Avatar image for prdroog

Okay...It's cool if al the other games are released, but they should still cancel Ghostbusters.

Avatar image for Cobra5

Brutal legend needs a new publisher...

Avatar image for hungfar

Is it me or have Activision and EA switched places? I thought EA was the company that stifled creativity, pooped out the same tired games each year and never took any chances. Guess I was wrong.

Avatar image for io7

Eureka! But i think they reinstalled Ghostbusters cuz of the noise we made. YAY US!

Avatar image for wmgk

If world in conflict soviet assault is cancled i hope it is not but won't sierra publish wic if activision passes unless swordfish stoudios is making it for the ps3 {btw it is world IN conflict not world at conflict}

Avatar image for Twiztid-Maddox

all I really care about is Brutal Legend...

Avatar image for DontEatCream

If Act-Blizz is going to sell off all these franchises, can't another publisher pick 'em up on the cheap? If so, some of these games might find a new home. I don't want to see World in Conflict end, nor Chronicles of Riddick.

Avatar image for Sandman100

They should really keep the games that some people have spent a few years working on like Ghostbusters, Dark Athen, Wet. The rest are crap but I'm glad there still doing prototype. What is the unannounced game it must be good if they want to keep it and get rid of the rest.

Avatar image for OrkHammer007

Yep... welcome to Activision EA, guys! You're FIRED!!!

Avatar image for xxxMoreBeerxxx

I will buy 2 games of Brutal Legend when it hopefully gets released. F$%^ off Activision!

Avatar image for ajac

thank god ghostbusters isnt being cancled after all!

Avatar image for NinjaiOfDeath

WTF?! BRUTAL LEGEND! It was going to be awesome. I will destroy.
