Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, more dropped by Activision

Publisher passes on a slew of Vivendi Games' in-development titles; 50 Cent, World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, Wet also affected.

Earlier today, Activision Publishing announced a streamlining of its Vivendi Games operations, saying it would be bringing into the fold five of that company's franchises: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Prototype, and one unannounced game.

An Activision representative later confirmed for GameSpot that those would be the only Vivendi Games franchises coming out of the publisher. That leaves a number of high-profile projects in limbo, including Double Fine Productions' Brutal Legend, as well as Wet, Ghostbusters, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, World at Conflict: Soviet Assault, 50 Cent Blood on the Sand, Zombie Wranglers, Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, plus several Xbox Live Arcade titles.

"The only franchises that Activision Publishing will release are based on Crash Bandicoot, Ice Age and Spyro, as well as Prototype, and one other game that has not yet been announced," the representative said. "We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing."

Activision Blizzard has other publishing arms like Blizzard Entertainment and Activision Value that were not covered by the press release and could be among the options being reviewed. As of press time, representatives from those companies did not return requests for comment.

A scheduled Comic-Con International panel on the Ghostbusters game was abruptly cancelled last week, with no explanation given to attendees. However, the game was on the show floor in playable form.

[UPDATE]: A Sierra Games representative told GameSpot he couldn't speak about all the titles on the list in need of a publisher, but stressed that Ghostbusters is not canceled.

yawn, i was just gona rent it anyway, this was not in my list of 17 must have games anyway so i wont be affected if it is dropped

Everyone is jumping to the defense of Ghostbusters, but for why I don't know - anyone with any amount of foresight can tell that such a high profile production WILL happen. I'm starting to wonder if not enough people know about Brutal Legend. Given Double Fine's cult reputation, that may unfortunately be the case. If you don't know anything/much about Brutal Legend, please look it up, read some articles, watch the trailer, and you'll see why it's every bit as deserving of attention and support as Ghostbusters.

OK, seriously, Activision, what the hell? Why in the blue hell would you drop Ghostbusters but keep Crash Bandicoot? You knew for a fact that many nerds were going to buy it the second it came out. Oh, that's right, so you can funnel a few bucks into Crash and Spyro this year and watch as clueless parents buy them to shut their kids up while they get back to their beer. Good work.

I wonder if the Spyro series is selling well despite middling to bad reviews. I know that Ice Age will sell well regardless of the reviews, but I have to wonder about what Activision's thinking in general. I hope they're not stupid enough to drop Ghostbusters or World In Conflict, those games are guaranteed sellers, and Chronicles of Riddick'd probably be a safe investment too. I can understand about Brutal Legend, given that it seems even weirder and less accessible than Psychonauts (which was actually a very good and appealing game for a wide audience, just not very well marketed) so far, and I can also understand that they'd drop some other titles that don't seem like they'd be necessarily profitable, but overall they seem to be making some surprisingly bad judgements.

What idiots. Activision really dropped the ball on this one. Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, Riddick, World in Conflict and even Leisure Suite Larry all have the potential to be profitable endeavors. What the hell were they thinking? What seems most sad is the fact that most gamers had been concerned with EA gobbling up gaming companies left and right, while we felt more at ease with Activision's acquisition of V.U. and look what happens. Thanks for making me look like a fool Activision by believing you wouldn't turn into what we hate most about EA.

Avatar image for wizard_924

So much crap. Only good thing is that we don't have to deal with Blood on the Sand for a while. Bad thing is we don't get more of Double Fine's God Tier

Avatar image for TrueIori

WHAT u picked, ice age, spiral and crash, series that are long dead and should stay dead over Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena after the first one for Xbox was awesome. Okay Activision by far are the stupidest morons running a game company. If ti was not for COD you all be dead and i hope everything blows up in your face nimrods. Well i do not know why i act surprise these people wanted to make a 50 cent game -_-

Replace Ghostbusters with Spyro...........thats brilliant

Avatar image for tawagivercetti

Ghostbusters will be, better be a Leisure suit larry (the first lslarry for xbox was banned in australia?) lol

Avatar image for keyser27

Everything on that list is trash except Ghostbusters, which looks AMAZING. Original cast returning (minus Moranis) to make the 3rd movie as a video game? I can't think of anyone who has anything negative to say about that idea. But You have to remember, Activision is only interested in games they can release sequels for EVERY YEAR... Like Tony Hawk, COD, GH etc etc... If Activision had RE we would be on RE 12 by now, with the same gameplay as the first one. They make EA look like Shigeru Miyamoto. If Ramis and Murray were interested in pumping out 8 ghostbusters games, one every november, Activision would be all over it. Worst game company ever.

Avatar image for hokies1313

World In Conflict is a lot better than any of those games mentioned. I seriously hope Activision reconsiders this. Honestly, what the heck is wrong with these people!?

Avatar image for peanutbh420

man thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard. ghostbusters looks like it would be a sweet game why wouldnt they wanna bring something out like especially when it was close to its release.

Avatar image for DangerClown

Wow, what's up with Ghostbusters that Activision isn't willing to bet on it?

Avatar image for skemaal

I really hope Ghostbusters isn't canceled as the update stated It was one of the few upcomining games I was looking forward to.

Avatar image for The-Croix-Man

If you read the update people it clearly says that Ghostbusters is NOT canceled!

Avatar image for torres_unix

The only game that should be canned is 50-cent; he's still trying to bring his trash into the world. As far as Ghostbusters, man, it was looking great and I was actually willing to pay for it when it came out. I hope the idiots at Activision read what gamers write in forums like these so that they can get an idea on how this market really works - we make it work!

Avatar image for superox12000

they only have one reason for dropping these games and that is WOW i hate that game it's over-rated

Avatar image for pinpointmc

Why Activision is considering dropping World in Conflict: Soviet Assault and its developer Massive Entertainment is beyond me. Honestly though all the other kiddie value-priced crap with the exception of Leisure Suit Larry, Ghostbusters, and Chronicles of Riddick deserve to be canned.

Avatar image for Vorodor21

None of the games that were dropped are officially cancelled, though in 50 cent's case we can only hope. They just no longer have a publisher. The developers for Brutal Legend have said the game is fine. This isn't the first time a game has been dropped by a publisher only to be picked up by someone else, and it won't be the last time I'm sure.

Avatar image for Jericho66

Ghostbusters and Leisure Suit Larry....c'mon what the hell, ghostbusters looked excellent!

Avatar image for The-Croix-Man

I really thought Wet would be great, but a few days gave up on it.... and I guess I gave up on it at the right time.

Avatar image for therealdolemike

Activision is smoking something (crack). Ghostbusters looked to be in my top 5 games to play for next year, now i am just pisssssed off. Activision , i thought out of the big boys they were going the right direction, nope they are wanting to screw the industry like EA. I hope both of these companies go away and the Little Guy comes back.

Avatar image for majidok

What the :o ?! Don't do that those are going to be some amazing games ! Don't do that !

Avatar image for baystatethrashr

wow activision you are the new EA. ive been wanting to play Chronicles of Riddick since it came out on the origianl xbox and i was pissed when they said that it can never be backwards compatible they got my hopes up for the 360 version for nothing now. some of those other games looked great too like brutal legend, WET and world in conflict. F#$% you activision, there is no reason why you have to cancel some of these games.

Avatar image for Wolfy013

Come ON. Don't get rid of Riddick or Brutal Legend! D: I couldn't care less about the rest, and the ones they wanna keep don't excite me... Although, dropping 50 Cent isn't anything worth crying over. Actually, it's just the opposite.

Avatar image for lowkey254

@Yuck_Too Lego Ghostbusters would be fun. I've been waiting on Ghostbusters to come out for the longest and now it may not come out?! I hope it's the unannounced game they mentioned.

Avatar image for Yuck_Too

Lego Ghostbusters!

Avatar image for Brokendemise

I dont care about anything on that list of games except Ghostbusters. There will be rioting on the streets if there isn't going to be a Ghostbusters Game.

Avatar image for dentedskillet

Word to Microsoft... If Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is canned, please make Butchers Bay backwards compatible/release it on Xbox Originals.... Also crossing my fingers for additional good news on Ghostbusters.

Avatar image for threedown

looks like theyre trargeting the kiddies with these titles... oh well, so far any game with the name vivendi on it has sucked big time

Avatar image for huntercal

Man it would really suck should they cancel Brutal Legend, it shows some really promise to not only be fun to play but hilarious as well.

Avatar image for Collin20

I need that Riddick game!

Avatar image for NandoSupes

a shame really. I was looking forward to Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. I'm glad that Ghostbusters didn't get cancel, the game looks very nice indeed.

Avatar image for djdna514

okay. this shows how far out of touch A/V actually are. Spyro games only sell when they are on the discount shelves of walmart, and crash hasnt been the same since the PS1. Prototype gets a bit more of a push thats cool, but i was rather looking foward to ghostbusters. Activision is really rubbing me the wrong way lately.

Avatar image for Mindchamber

Leisure Suit Larry makes it in but not Brutal Legend? activision has no sense of gaming and need to go away.

Avatar image for PixyMisao

Ghostbusters should not be cancelled, ironic however that it's back in the hands of the developers of the first game (which was decent on Commadore, Atari & SMS and utter crap on NES). Hopefully they'll let you destroy all but the Sega games at a special press event.

Avatar image for nosferatusbutt

50 cent 360 game...Please. What's next? A Prince and the Revolution game! LOL

Avatar image for lime05

THANK GOD! GHOSTBUSTERS ROCK!........ i am hanging out for this ! Seriously come on, can anything get cooler then Ghostbusters! Still one of the most creative, entertaining concepts around. So sad, no one is wise enough to relise the enormous potential for a well done Ghostbusters 2009 Movie !! As for the rest of the games..... 50 Cent ? LOL what a crock of that non-gamers buy., or just really stupid mainstream ghetto povo's with no futures Spyro : cute , but in weak central character, in comparsion to what is out there..... (Daxter for example) Larry : had his days, think they are over. The character is no longer really revelent..... he looks tame, compared to the smut this Gen Z lot indulge in.......... *filthy animals you all are !!! :P

Avatar image for tony2077ca

lets all pray that someone will publish these

Avatar image for coruscant

This move makes no sense to me

Avatar image for RAVEZero

Dammit...Spyro's sucked since the PS1, Crash has nearly lost all respect anywhere... Why can't companies put more faith in original titles rather than franchises that have lost everything that made them great?! I'm not a metal head, but they for damn sure better not cancel Brutal Legend. And screw Ice Age. A good game does not a movie make.

EHH Irrelavent everything their making is garabage to me

Avatar image for KhanhAgE

What is it with them keeping Ice Age? Is it because they know idiots will buy it?

Avatar image for RadTad62

that's good because for them to drop ghostbusters after all the time and money would be a slap in the face to all that are involved with the game

Avatar image for nosferatusbutt

I just saw the update, thank god. Ghostbusters is still on. Now for that beer.....ahhhh

Avatar image for nosferatusbutt

Ok, i have been out all day. Can some let me know if it true that Ghostbuster's has been truly dumped, or not. Is there a website then this one with more info about this issue. Thank's

Avatar image for 1valiantknight

Brutal Legend!!! NOOOOOO!!! This is totally lame. No love for the metal heads what the hell?!?!?! Riddick too, ugh! This really sucks. Add on top of all that Diablo 3 looking like WoW and Activision Blizzard doesn't have a very good start. Wet looked cool too.

Avatar image for kollin_1

The only games out of there worth anything are Brutal Legend and Ghost Busters. After Psychonauts came out, Double Fine became one of my favourite developers. After the Atari days, I think Activision really went down hill. Big time.
