Bravely Second Has 14,000 Lines of Dialogue, Dev Would "Love" to Make Third Game

The team recorded 50 lines an hour for three months to get the job done; producer eager to make another game.

Recently released Nintendo 3DS role-playing game Bravely Second: End Layer features 14,000 lines of dialogue, it was announced today during a PAX East panel.

Square Enix localization lead John Townsend shared the figure today during a presentation titled "Continuing To Be Brave! The Development of Bravely Second: End Layer.

During the recording session, the team recorded 50 lines per hour for three months to get all the work done. Around 50 actors were involved in the recording process, Townsend said. It's not immediately clear if the figures he revealed are for both Japanese and English, but in any event, it's a lot of dialogue.

To put that figure into context, Bethesda's massive console and PC RPG featured more than 111,000 lines of dialogue, which is more than the combined amount of dialogue in Skyrim and Fallout 3.

During a Q&A session after the briefing, a fan asked co-producer Masashi Takahashi, who was also on the panel, if there might be a third game. He said it's company policy that he cannot make any announcements, but said he would "love" to return to the Bravely universe in the future.

The first two games that Takahashi worked on after joining Square Enix were Bravely Default (2012) and the sequel, he pointed out, adding that the series is special to him.

FFX had 9000 lines of dialogue and that was out 15 years ago. Nintendo still showing us how PS2 looking era hardware can still do PS2 like things.

*takes a look at screenshot above*. Oh sorry this looks more like a 32bit PS1 game. My bad people. sorry.

shame the region-lock and censoring ruined this fine game

i'm still waiting on the release of Fire emblem fates EU version

maybe there the dialouge isn't complete piss! because the NA version got the most dumbed down dialouge and they don't even

have these voiced responses anymore! it's just text! and childlishly translated text!

nintendo tree house really fucked up...

And I'd love to play it, but please: Make a new world, get Revo back and don't make any stupid repetitions or other gimmicks again.

Being fair, Number is not out of the ordinary for an jRPG and quinda low compared to modern western RPGs in general. Fallout 3 had around 40k lines of dialogue, New Vegas 65k and the Mass Effect games between 30k-40k (depending on game).

The original was great, but the Grind at the end was so awful, I will be missing out. The grind was so frustrating.

@ACMC85: I'm near the end of the game. The grind is far less here than Default. No stupid repetition, and the small amount of repetition that is there is handled humorously and is dealt with quickly. I strongly suggest playing it even if you hated the grind/looping in BD.

@ACMC85: Pretty sure the grind in this one is significantly less.

The quality of the voice acting must have suffered. You're unlikely to get 50 well directed lines out in an hour.

As mentally grueling as it sounds, I would love to do voice acting for video games.

Too bad I sound like sound like an ungodly mix of a dying honey badger and Michael Cera.

Ok for those of you who love the first and got the second, how is it if you don't care for the censoring since I don't know what was censored in the first place anyways?? I'm hearing really mixed opinions here.

@syntaxkt:
A simple Google told me that it was some small cleavage / underboob that was censored out.... and changing the whole 'Native American' look of some job class into a 'Cowboy' look for some reason or the other.
The former I (somewhat) understand but the latter is your standard case of localisation stupidity.

@z827: While I agree with the silliness of the Native-American to Cowboy look, it actually ends up fitting better as a cowboy as the person who uses that job uses rifles.

@Doomerang:
... at the cost of turning a certain character into a spirit-speaking tribal cowgirl with a design that's worse off than the original.
Nah, it's a bad change.

@syntaxkt: The censorship, while it sucks they felt the need to censor it, doesn't affect too much. The game is still awesome, and a good throwback to when Square pumped out nothing but excellent RPGs.

if there is a third game it needs to be in a new world. its nice to be in the same place but a lot of the game is in places ive seen before. also the towns are beautiful but it needs to really feel like a town. let me walk inside every building instead of like two buildings. these games are fun but they have so much more unused potential.

I hope they do this for fighting games. It's boring to have the same 3 lines over and over.
