2K Games announced today in a post on its Support site that as a result of the GameSpy Technology closure, it will transition some legacy games to Valve's Steamworks and end support altogether for others.

First, the games that are going offline for good come May 31:

  • Borderlands (PS3)*
  • Civilization Revolution (PS3)*
  • Close Combat First to Fight (PC / Mac)
  • Jetfighter (PC)
  • Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector (PC)
  • Leadfoot (PC)
  • Rune (PC)
  • Stronghold 2 (PC)
  • Stronghold Legends (PC)
  • Top Spin (PS2 / PC)
  • Top Spin 2 (PC / DS)
  • Vietcong (PC)
  • Vietcong Demo (PC)
  • Vietcong Fist Alpha (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 Demo (PC)
  • MLB Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (DS)
  • Major League Baseball 2K9 Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • NHL 2K10 (Wii)
  • NBA 2K10 (Wii)

*2K says it is currently looking into the "technical feasibility" of transitioning Borderlands (PS3) and Civilization Revolution (PS3) to another network. But that's all we know right now. Of course, you'll still be able to play all of these games offline.

Also on May 31, the original Borderlands (PC) and various Civilization games will temporarily go offline while 2K completes a server transition from GameSpy Technology to Steamworks. During this time, players will experience interruption of online play, matchmaking, and VOIP. Offline play is unaffected.

Below is a list of 2K games that will be transitioned to Steamworks starting May 31.

  • Borderlands (PC)
  • Civilization III
  • Civilization III: Conquests
  • Civilization III: Play the World
  • Civilization IV
  • Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
  • Civilization IV: Colonization
  • Civilization IV: Warlords

"We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause," 2K said in a statement.

2K is not the only publisher facing issues from the impending closure of GameSpy. Crytek announced last week that the PC versions of Crysis and Crysis 2 are going offline on May 31. Electronic Arts is also affected, and has pledged to find other means to keep old Battlefield games alive after May 31.

That's alright about borderlands. I'm happy with Borderlands 2 and the upcoming "Pre Sequel"

I think I'm more surprised that Vietcong and V2 were actually still online. That just blew my mind. Those are some old games right there.

Hopefully they fix civ rev

Borderlands went on sale for both the PC & PS3 close to one another. I am lucky I got mine for the PC... ( $1.99 -Nothing beats steam deals)

Lame. These games should have like a final patch that unlocks like an "enter server address" field for multiplayer matchmaking so that even if it was a hassle and required you to goto a fan site to or use a PC program, you could continue playing these games online past the point of the developer no longer wanting to support them.

console gaming at its finest...

I'm not really sure what Gamespy has to do with online gaming. "

As a result of GameSpy's closure, PlayStation 3 versions of original Borderlands and Civilization Revolution will no longer be playable online " Why would a video game news website, control this?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I remember when GameSpy first came out a long time ago. I feel old now. GameSpy was for hosting PC games online & Had Voice Chat so you could talk & not half to type. The question is, why would any console need that service after 2005?

The possibility of servers shutting down after X amount of years is why games should never be "always online". The fact that Titanfall is useless without the internet is one reason of many that it should not be rated anywhere near a 9.

It's so funny how we slam Xbox, but if I wanted I can still play Forza 2 and Perfect Dark online on my 360. Games that were released over right years ago.

Avatar image for drwhoiscool

<< LINK REMOVED >> Forza 2 and Perfect Dark do not run through Game Spy service, so what does this have to do with anything here? I can still play doom 1 multiplayer & its from the early 90s. I guess that statement is the same as yours. It has nothing to do with the article.

So why is the Xbox games not affected

Avatar image for snaketus

<< LINK REMOVED >> Their online multiplayer wasn't hosted by Gamespy or it just isn't mentioned, would be typical Xbotting by Gamespot.

Avatar image for A8ADD0N

Or maybe it's because Borderlands on Xbox doesn't use Gamespy servers? I think it's funny how some people try to lambast Xbox Live, but you get what you pay for. I haven't seen any articles about Xbox 360 games losing server support lately, but it seems like every other week another game on PS3 is losing multiplayer support. Gotta wonder why that is?

But hey, I guess it's all just because Gamespot is Xbotting...whatever the **** that means.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> that's intentional, their games are so similar you could play an older version for years without updating if you wanted too. EA shuts down their servers to force the gamer into buying the newer updated (lol updated is funny word for EA) version of the game.

It's why they handle the Servers as opposed to letting MS handle them.

Avatar image for Ambivalist

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yup, that's why we see EA games occasionally get taken down. They refuse to use Xbox's provided servers and instead opt for their own. Since they don't have the same resources, they've put themselves in a position (maybe intentionally) where older games (specifically sports games) will be pulled down as newer ones are released.

Servers may die, but Singleplayer lives forever.

Sony should:

1) Set automatically all the online trophies as obtained in these cases. It's frustrating to lose this trophy because of server shutdowns.

2) Avoid to make online trophies mandatory in order to get a plat.

Of course, I'm just dreaming...

Avatar image for drwhoiscool

<< LINK REMOVED >> Thats my problem with Wolfenstien for PS3. I can't get any trophies because I can't play On-Line... I hate it when your stuck like that.

Avatar image for StonerDemon

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I guess it's not an easily solvable issue. But it's frustrating for people like me or you when we have a job, studies, a girlfriend, meetings, etc.

Avatar image for hoyholyhoy

<< LINK REMOVED >> They should not do that because it's not fair to the people who actually earned the trophies for some stupid kid to auto-achieve a platinum without trying.

Avatar image for StonerDemon

@hoyholyhoy @StonerDemon I'm hardly stupid, I'm hardly a kid. The difference:

I'm 35 --> You're a kid.
I have a degree --> You're on high school.
I have a car --> You have your legs.
I have a girlfriend --> You have your hands.

Check your manners, kiddo. I never insulted you.

Avatar image for snaketus

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> There shouldn't be online multiplayer trophies or they shouldn't be required for plat anyway imo. To force people play some stupid ass shoehorned in multiplayer is just stupid.

Avatar image for cws3e

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> and what about people who feel 'forced' to play single player???

Avatar image for drwhoiscool

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>They are when you can only get a platnium for unlocking all the rest, jerk.

Avatar image for DETfaninATL

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, for quite a lot of us, the trophies are one of the most fun parts of the game, provide additional things to attempt in the game that you might not normally think of or do and in some cases become more of a challenge than the game itself............moron.........

Avatar image for A8ADD0N

No one's "forcing" you to get utterly pointless trophies in the first place, moron.

All servers die. Another reason NOT to allow Microsoft to make even Single Player games "Cloud Computed". Someday those servers will turn off. I still go back to games all the time (Chrono Cross just yesterday!).

Avatar image for MaddenBowler10

<< LINK REMOVED >> And so will you. I think most games are kept online long enough to enjoy them, especially the ones on this list.

Avatar image for sladakrobot

<< LINK REMOVED >> All 300,000 server wil shut down.

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

Surely no one thinks any service will last indefinitely. As long as I have to be online anyway, I'd rather be on Steam or PSN (or XBL if I used XB) than anywhere else, but I am glad that Ubi and EA have their own services for their own games. Since none of my friends play Civ, I am just gonna assume Civ 3 and 4 are single player games.

Wait, why does the PS3 version of BL also use GameSpy? Is PSN not an online matchmaking service?

Avatar image for cws3e

<< LINK REMOVED >> no its not.

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's terrible! It hurts me to think that a small game like Dragon's Crown has to pay for its own matchmaking service.
